A s we settle into 2006, the Torrey Pines High School Foundation Board is re-energized to reach the challenging goal that we set for ourselves at the beginning of the year. As president, I have renewed my pledge to raise the

funds needed to support the “Shared Vision for Excellence,” the wish list developedby staff, students and parents to give our students a top-quality education.

We have an amazing group of donors who have put forth a Challenge Grant of $160,000! To date we have matchedtheir challenge with $108,000. That means we have another$52,000 to go.

Please consider a gift to the TPHS Foundation to help usmatch the challenge . . . not only will your gift be doubled,but your dollars will go a long way toward benefiting everystudent at Torrey Pines High School.

Another way you can support the school is to attend our annual fundraising dinner“Escape to Rio!” on March 25th. Anne comes to us with over 30 years of nonprofit administration,fundraising, marketing and management experience. Her profes-sional career has been dedicated to nonprofit organizations atnational, mid-size and grass root levels. Anne has had fourteenyears of fundraising experience in the North Coastal and SanDieguito communities that included major gifts, annual and capital campaigns. She has extensive experience in working with volunteers and has a passion for kids, education and Torrey Pines High School.

Have you seen a group of our stu-dents performing highly skilled jazzdances and gyrating hip-hop per-formances at several football gamehalf-times during the fall and atBack To School Night? Meet theFalcon Dance Team! Dance atTPHS is alive, well and growing.

The current team of fifteen stu-dents auditioned for the Team inMay of 2005, and have been work-ing together ever since, achieving anew standard for excellence fordance at TPHS. The Falcon DanceTeam rehearsed in leased local dancestudio space all summer and attend-ed a camp in USA Jazz DanceCamp at Cal State Long Beach onAugust 12 - 14, 2005. Team mem-bers (accompanied by our coaches,advisor and parent chaperones),attended classes, workshops, andcompeted for Dance Star ribbons.Amy Jacobson was awarded thishonor and performed in front ofthe entire camp as a finalist!

During the school year, the Teamrehearses two afternoons each week,

as there is not a dance team classcurrently. All this work resulted inthe excellent and entertaining per-formances this Team has delivered.

The faculty sponsor of the Teamfor the fall semester was JohannaSalem. The Team thanks Johannafor her dedication to dance atTPHS and helping this programachieve its current excellence. TheTeam is coached by Katie Carnettand Michael Langford as guestartists. Katie and Mike are profes-sional dance instructors who havecompeted, danced and taughtdance in the San Diego area formany years.

March 17-18 are the dates forthe Team’s national level competi-tion at the Anaheim ConventionCenter. This is the highlight eventof the year, for which the Team hasbeen training and practicing sinceJuly. The Team will be competingin both hip-hop and jazz categories.

In addition, several soloists and atrio will compete. We wish them all good luck!

Auditions for the 2006-2007Dance Team will be held in May,and will be open to all incoming9th graders and any current stu-dents that would like to participate.As Dance Team will have a classnext year, they will be able to fullyparticipate as a member of theTPHS Foundation. We look for-ward to even greater things fordancers at TPHS in years to come.

On January 10th Joan Elliott andLaura Rafal of F.A.M.E. presentedthe TPHS Music Director AmyWillcox and V.P. Barbara Stroudwith a check for $2,500 from theRancho Santa Fe Foundation. The money was in response to arequest for funds to purchase a newVibraphone. The Music Boosters will match the remaining fundsneeded for the purchase. “The cur-rent Vibraphone is quite old and isbeing held together with twist tiesand faith” said Lisa Sweet, MusicBooster President. “This is a muchneeded purchase and would not havebeen possible without the help ofF.A.M.E. and the dedication of twostudents, Sarah K. and Margo E. “

The Music Department was also

the recipient of very generous dona-tions by the Sapp and Shoen familiesfor the specific purchase or recordingequipment. “Our students are so tal-ented, until now we have not beenable to record our concerts. Theequipment is also necessary for thosestudents who are looking to apply to colleges in the field of music. Allschools require recordings and wehave not been able to support ourMusic students in that area . Now we can!” said Amy Willcox. This year the Music Department will holdover 10 concerts and host visits from5 renown Music Artists in theirendeavor to bring Music Educationto an even higher level. Mini-Grantsfor TeachersThe Parent Volunteer Associationdonned Santa hats and handed out $29,000 worth of Teacher Mini-Grants to teachers in December.The lecture hall was filled with hun-dreds of requested items for teach-ers and their classrooms. Thank youto Terry Wolter, her dedicated com-mittee and to all of the donors whomade the mini-grants possible!Your gifts make a difference.

Video/Film NewsThank You! Our Fall Appeal generated anoverwhelming response.

Your generous contributions are helpingto facilitate our goal of updating our videodepartment with the latest technologicaladvancements and training tools in theindustry.

Recent purchases, made availablethrough parent donations and mini-grants,include 8 mini DV digital cameras, twoshotgun microphones and a Final Cut Proediting/teaching workstation, all which areused on a regular basis, directly benefitingthe students this year.

In the upcoming months, we plan toadd another workstation, two I-Macs for I-Movie editing, replace old cameras andbroken tripods, and upgrade the soundcapturing system.

The TPHS Film Festival, organized by the Video/Film Club, will be held onFriday, February 10th at 6:30 p.m. in the Lecture Hall. A variety of short filmsproduced by TPHS students will be show-cased. Admission price: adults - $5.00, students - $2.00

All proceeds will benefit the Video/FilmClub.
