On these days, people add kusmet (literally, good luck charms) into the banitsa. These lucky charms are usually small pieces of a dogwood branch, which vary as to the number of buds on them. They sym- bolize health and longevity. The branches are hid- den inside the banitsa and the banitsa is then baked. When ready, the banitsa is cut in a way that each piece contains a dogwood branch (sometimes wrapped in foil). A wish is associated with each branch and the different number of buds on the branch helps to recognize the corresponding wish. The wishes include happiness, health, success, travel, etc. The banitsa is then spun on the table and everyone takes the piece which is in front of them when the spinning stops. “Breath Health” —Rene McLain

At the Grace Center

If you have read the “Interchange, Too” lately, you know that Joe Thompson and I traveled down some rivers in Europe from Amsterdam down to Romania on an amazing Vi-king River Trip. We had the oppor-tunity to visit a home in Bulgaria where Ramona treated us to a cook-ing demonstration of a traditional holi-day Christmas bread called Banitsa. In Bulgaria, banitsa is a symbol of Bulgarian cuisine and tradi-tions. Bulgarians prepare and serve banitsa on two holidays—Christmas and New Year’s Eve. On these days, people add kusmet (literally, good luck charms) into the banitsa. These lucky charms are usually small pieces of a dogwood branch, which vary as to the number of buds on them. They sym-bolize health and longevity. The branches are hid-den inside the banitsa and the banitsa is then baked. They then find their fortune inside the piece. The fortunes predict what

The Southeastern European country of Bulgaria has always

been a crossroads between Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

As such, Bulgaria’s traditional foods have been influenced by

the surrounding region, sharing many dishes and flavors with

Turkish, Middle Eastern, Italian, and Greek cuisines. Tradi-

tional recipes often feature Bulgarian feta cheese

or sirene; meat, especially grilled lamb, pork, or veal; fresh

vegetables; and yogurt.

In Bulgaria, Christmas or Rozhdestvo Hristovo, literally

"Nativity of Jesus," is celebrated on Dec. 25, according to the

Gregorian calendar even though this is a predominantly Ortho-

dox Christian country (other Orthodox Christians follow the Julian calendar).

Christmas Eve or badni vecher is just as important (in some minds even more important). It's the last day of fasting

for Advent and, like so many Slavic cultures, an odd number of meatless dishes are served at a grand meal.

A budnik or ceremonial log is brought into the house and set alight in the fireplace.

Among Bulgarian Christmas traditions is the boy carolers or koledari who go house to house starting at midnight on

Christmas Eve to sing carols and wish health, wealth, and happiness to neighbors in return for a coin or a treat or a

little nip.

The name for Santa Claus in Bulgaria is Dyado Koleda (Grandfather Christmas). Dyado Mraz (Grandfather Frost) made an appearance during Communist rule when religion was frowned upon but, since 1989, he has been largely forgotten. The Christmas Eve dinner table often is not cleared until Christmas morning to provide food for the ghosts of family members. On Christmas Day, the Advent fast is over and meat returns in all its glory with pork, sausages, poultry and more taking a starring role. Desserts become more elaborate and drinking is not only allowed but encouraged. Even though Christmas Eve is considered a Lenten meal, no one leaves the table hungry on this night. The dishes have symbolic meanings centering around fertility and abundance: Beans and legumes figure prominently because they signify wealth and prosperity in the coming year. On a Bulgari-

an Christmas Eve table you might find sauerkraut salad with leeks, olives and carrots, grilled sweet red and yellow

peppers, grilled eggplant marinated in olive oil, vinegar, spices, parsley and garlic, beans stewed with vegetables in

a traditional clay pot. Meatless chomlek, prepared by stewing onions, tomatoes, and garlic seasoned with red pep-

per, bay leaf, savory, red wine and thickened with a roux, is also popular.

Most Bulgarian families don't drink alcoholic beverages until midnight of Christmas Eve. Then, Bulgarian grape bran-

dy (greyana rakiya) is served from ceramic ware. This potent drink is also known as rakia, rakija and rachiu in the

Balkans. Serbian rakija is made with plum brandy instead of grape brandy. Another popular Bulgarian drink that

might be served is mastika, a strong anise-flavored drink, that is drunk chilled. When mastika is combined with men-

ta, a mint liqueur, it produces a traditional cocktail called "The Cloud." Heated red wine known as greyano vino, simi-

lar to Polish hot mulled wine also might be served.

The hosts might leave the Christmas Eve dinner table as it is after everyone finishes eating and might not be cleared until the next morning. This is to provide sustenance for the ghosts of ances-tors who might come back to visit before Christmas morning. Bulgarian culture features a central belief: The legend that the Virgin Mary bore Christ on Christ-mas Eve but only announced his birth the day after, on Christmas Day. Bulgarian legend also has it that Mary was in labor from December 20 until the birth of Christ. December 20 is the Day of St. Ignat, or Ignazhden, in Bulgaria.

I didn’t realize until I looked at this map how close we were

to Edirne when I was there in Turkey years ago.

Joanne Verone wants us to know about this: …...Joanne is recommending that you check out this video https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/#inbox/FMfcgxvzLrGDMKFlZPCrzlxMRCbpwJGd?projector=1. You will be able to access this presentation: “432 Hz—Unlocking the Magnificence of the 3,6,9: The Key to the Universe.” This video is an ex-

planation of 432 Hz versus 440 Hz in music. In 1940, United States introduced 440Hz, it was originally

used by the Nazism.

Vibration is everything. And every vibration has its own frequency. By exposing the mind and body to the

Solfeggio frequencies, you can easily achieve a greater sense of balance and deep healing. The Solfeggio

frequencies align you with the rhythms and tones that form the basis of the Universe.

Long associated with meditation music the solfeggio frequencies are reputed to be the original frequencies used by the Gregorian Monks when they chanted in meditation. The chant, based on the original six notes (396hz – 417hz – 528hz – 639hz – 741hz – 852hz), penetrates deep into the conscious and subconscious mind, drawing forth emotional reactions which we are sometimes unable to completely control. These origi-nal frequencies are said to have been ‘lost’ over the centuries with the introduction of various new tuning methods."

Another good video is: https://youtu.be/GnEWOYKgI4o (“The Secret Behind”).

Here are some examples of this special tonal music. Quite beautiful!:

Dear Friends,

John Haylor was a good friend to those of us in the December 2017 - October 2018 Power of 8 group which originally was attended by 6 TPA members and 6 Trillium Fitness members.

John attended TPA in May when Dale offered his presentation on Dr. Joe Dispenza’s “On Becoming Su-pernatural.” Ellen Fuller, Elaine Chandler, Annie Massaro, Debbie Pillsbury, Stacey Emmons, Martin Otto, Joanne Verone, Dale and Nancy Gallagher had the privilege of meeting and getting to know John through some of our joined TPA and Power of 8 events.

Barb St. Pierre, co-owner of Trillium, had this to say about our good friend John Haylor, “We were blessed to have had his wit, charm, kindness, and compassion. His heart was as big as his smile that he wore into the gym daily. He was always there for a shoulder to lean on or an ear to bend. He had a way of firing off those witty and funny innuendo’s. We are all very saddened with this news and the world has lost a great man who gave of himself 100% in whatever he did. “

On Friday, December 7th from 5-7pm, we invite all who wish to share memories, photos, stories or what-ever you would like to John’s other “home,” at 2815 Erie Blvd East, Trillium Sport & Fitness Center.

We hope you can join us, All LIGHT to John’s SPIRIT, Nancy & Dale Gallagher

…… Sami Bati and Caterina Ranieri treated us to a wonderful and fascinating trip through the brain in Sami’s tech-supported narrative and slideshow. He introduced us to many remedies from other countries, especially Russia, that cure what ails us and is much su-perior to prescription drugs used so widely in the U.S. that end up counteracting each other. We also learned much about his unique life, lived in several countries.

…...Joanne Verone: Anne Hornstein and I are planning on doing a Labyrinth at the Art Park next year. People can also go sledding, cross country skiing, etc., in the winter.

…….Aziz Goksel is still undergoing treatments every other week but is back to working on his music. Links to some of the tonal healing music that Joanne Verone recommended has been sent to him. He has also gone back to meditating as well. We will surely miss him and his magic keys on my pi-ano when we again sing Christ-mas carols and holiday songs together.
