President’s Comments:
At the January General Meeting I mentioned that, due to
an unfortunate mix-up, our hall was booked out for the
weekend of our June meeting, so our meeting would be
held on the fifth Friday – 29 June – with Novice/New
Growers on Sunday 1 July. I strongly regret any
confusion. Unfortunately word is around that this change
refers to another meeting so I confirm my January advice
that June is the month this year that we meet on 29th, with
Novices on 1 July.
Our recent committee meeting considered the loss of our
Patron and decided to leave the position vacant until the
A.G.M. in October.
Jean and I attended a City Council briefing on running a
Not for Profit organisation where we were advised that
within the next year or so Queensland would fall into line
with other states by “combining” By-Laws with the
Constitution as part thereof. This would mean that if any
matter now included in the By-Laws, such as annual
subscriptions, required alteration then we would need to
complete the whole process of a change of constitution.
Currently By-Laws may be changed by the management
committee. It was suggested that “By-Laws” be changed
to “Policy” and printed in another book instead of at the
back of the constitution – why must life be made so
difficult?
Bus trip to Ingham for the Herbert River Orchid & Allied
Plant Society Inc. Field Day on 15 April will cost
members $20 per head, plus lunch $10 or non members
$25 per head plus $10 for lunch – with a raffle we may
just break even.
This month has five Fridays so make sure to come to our
meeting on 23 March - the fourth Friday. The Autumn
Show is on the following weekend with a few vacancies
still on the work roster. Let‟s use the show as part of our
65th Year celebrations.
Best Wishes to Warren for his surgery now scheduled for
2 April – he had a respiratory problem on the earlier
proposed date unfortunately. Also to the members who are
in hospital or not well enough to attend meetings our Best
Wishes to you for a fast and successful recovery. Keep
on growing those orchids.
W Nicholson
Novice/New Growers Report:
On a stormy afternoon on the 26th February, 63 members
and visitors were welcomed to our second meeting for the
year 2012.
Before the afternoon activities commenced, a minute
silence was observed for our Patron, the late Min Korsman
who passed away on the 22nd
February. Our sincere
condolences go to Peter and family on their sad loss. She
will be sadly missed by all members of the orchid
fraternity throughout Australia and overseas.
A general discussion on the benching of your orchid plants
for the coming Autumn Show took place regarding
placing your T.O.S number on the back of the Orchid
label, clean and disease free plants, no broken or
dilapidated pots and orchid pots to be free standing. We
would like to encourage all the novice growers to bring
along their plants for our Autumn Show.
5
Noel gave a brief summary on a couple of orchid species
plants regarding their origin and habit also as Noel is our
librarian officer is always on hand to help members with
orchid books from the library. A question was asked about
yellow leaves on a small dendrobium plant and it was
suggested to apply a small amount of Epsom Salts
(Magnesium Sulfate) to your fertiliser mixture when you
fertiliser your orchids but not on your Cattleya plants.
It is very pleasing to see the number of flowering that our
member bring along for the Popular Voting Competition
and the result in the Novice Section was Michelle Carroll
1st, Susan Wilson 2
nd and Tina Phillips 3
rd. The Open
Section Wal & Lyn Carlill was placed 1st & 2
nd with
Norma Palin 3rd
.
Our thanks go to Jeff and Alison for showing us a slide
programme of their holiday they had in Singapore and also
some slides of the 20th World Orchid Conference which
they attended whilst there.
The Phalaenopsis seedlings that we were left over from
the Phalaenopsis Seedling Competition last year were
placed on the Lucky Door Table which created a lot of
interest especially to our newer members. Thank you to
Jeff and Alison for looking after and caring for these
plants for us.
The Townsville Orchid Society Inc. will be hiring a Bus to
go to Ingham on the 15th April for their field day, please
put your name on the list at our next Friday night or
Sunday meetings as we need to fill the bus. Cost will be
$30 for T.O.S members and $35 for non members with
lunch inclusive. Once again we were treated to a
wonderful afternoon tea, birthday cakes and party caps
and we must also thank you all for your wonderful support
with donations of Multi Raffle Prizes and the Raffle
Ticket Sales.

VALE MINNIE (MIN) KORSMAN
It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our Patron Min
who has been a very loyal and hard working member with husband
Peter since joining in 1985.
In addition to being Patron at the end, Min attained another
milestone as our first ever Female President. She and Peter very
generously donated many plants, cuttings and other goods over the
years.
Min also led our Floral Art classes about twenty years ago and
was in charge of Catering and Hospitality (the kitchen) for a
number of years.
Min will be sadly missed by all and we extend our sincere
condolences to Peter and family members.

MEMBER’S CORNER
BIRTHDAY WISHES The TOS members wish the following birthday boys and girls a
very happy birthday with many more to follow:
In Noel’s Bush House 3 Cattleya labiata (Lindley 1821)
The naturalist William Swainson discovered this orchid in the province of Pernambuco (Northern Brazil) in 1817 and shipped it with other plants to the Glasgow Botanic Gardens. They were asked to send some divisions to a tropical plant collector in Barnet, England named William Cattley. Cattley flowered the first C. labiata in November 1818.
He hired a young botanist, John Lindley, to describe the plants in his collection, and in 1821 Lindley published a book in which he described C. labiata as a new species and established the genus Cattleya, naming it in honour of William Cattley. Cattleya labiata was not the first cattleya to be discovered – that honour goes to C. maxima, which was found in 1777 by Spanish botanists Hipolito Ruiz and Jose Antonio Pavon, but not described and named until 1831. The new, large-flowered Cattleya labiata created a sensation, with many wanting to import more plants – but nobody knew where to find them! There was confusion about where Swainson had found the orchid (it was thought it came from the Rio de Janeiro area (1000 km south of Pernambuco)), Swainson by this time was in New Zealand and could not be contacted, and Cattleya labiata was not rediscovered for over 70 years. Cattleya labiata is the „type‟ species for the genus, being the first to be described. The other large-flowered cattleyas, such as C. warneri, C. mossiae and C. trianaei are often referred to as being in the Labiata Group of cattleyas. It is one of the uni-foliate cattleyas (having one leaf), which include the large-flowered cattleyas, but also some smaller-flowered species, such as C. luteola, C. iricolor and C. walkeriana. I find Cattleya labiata a typically easy to grow cattleya. It is grown in a medium sized pot with Quincan gravel. Given regular fertiliser, it flowers each year, and is a welcome sign of the start of autumn. Flowering is initiated by the shortening of the day length into autumn. This is a wonderful orchid. And it has a wonderful perfume!

Show Report
Firstly, thank you to all those members who have
placed their name on the show roster for both the
show and kitchen. The success of our show relies on
those who volunteer their valuable time.
Show setup is on Thursday 29th
March from 11 am
with the show starting Friday 30th
and continuing
through to Sunday 1st April.
All those who intend to enter orchids in the show,
must have them at the hall before 6.30pm on the
Thursday.
We hope to encourage all members to enter their
flowering orchids - the more flowers presented the
better the show. For those new members the
following information will help you to present your
orchids for showing. This information is available in
the calendar that Jean Nicholson designed and also in
the information you received when you became a
member of the club.
The following is important information.
Ensure pots are clean and in good order.
Ensure plants are free from pests.
Remove all dead leaves and sheaths.
If unstable place into another larger pot.
Ensure labels are easy to read and has your
TOS number on the back. (the only way that
you can be identified).
You are not required to place your orchids in their
sections, just bring them to the hall and leave them on
the tables provided, the responsible people in charge
of setting up the sections will place them for you, the
following examples should assist you in providing the
correct information. (I have used my member number
as an example)
Fig 1 front of tag - name of plant
Fig 2 back of tag - your member number
Fig 3 sales tag - (curved venetian blind tags not
permitted) price and number must be provided
If you have orchids that have no name you can still
enter and win prizes with these orchids the name on
the tag will be (unknown).
Sales:
The sales people will not be able to sell your plants if
you do not have a tag attached, and more importantly
they will not know who to pay if you do not include
your member number.
Meetings
A valuable source of information as to how orchids
are judged and what judges are looking for is an
important part of the Friday night General meetings.
At this meeting flowering orchids are tabled, judged
and awarded points. After the judging a commentary
is given by the Registrar, Ted Boon, where he
highlights the good and bad of the presented flowers.
This is an interesting and informative meeting
especially for new growers. Door and raffle prizes are
also on offer at this meeting. by V-P Fred Marnock
