What’s in Your Recycle Bin? By The Greater Lebanon Refuse Authority
“The most common misunderstanding the public has about
CURBSIDE recycling is that you need to put as much as
possible into your recycle bin. However, recycling is actually a
system of collecting and processing used materials that still have
value. This means NOT everything is recyclable. There must be
someone to buy the used material and recycle it into a new
product. Just because it has a recycling symbol on the bottom,
DOES NOT mean it is recyclable. While most of us are
well intentioned, when we put materials that don't belong into the
bin, we are actually contaminating the recycling stream. When
you don't recycle right, this negatively impacts our environment
and economy.” Residents are reminded to recycle only these
core acceptable materials curbside.

Residents should place leaves in the street along the curb line in long narrow piles (as shown

equipment has space to operate. Remove all sticks, pine cones, nuts, etc. from your leaves as these
items can damage the machine. Crew members are not always able to finish a collection route in one day;
in which case, they will resume the following day until the route is completed. We ask residents to be
patient as crews work diligently to provide this service.

Did You Know…? The census has been a part of our nation’s history since the Founding
Fathers mandated a decennial count in the U.S. Constitution. The first
census held in 1790 counted 3.9 million people. The 2020 Census marks the
24th time the country is tallying its population. Be a part of history and
participate in the census.
Local Governments receive critical state and federal dollars based on
population numbers, including funds for roads, hospitals, schools, and many
other community services. Every dollar counts, now more than ever during
the COVID-19 crisis.
According to Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors
(PSATS) North Londonderry Township has a response rate of 85.7% putting
us at number two among PA communities. The
deadline to respond is September 30. If you haven’t yet
responded, you can do so online, by mail, or by phone.

Space Heater Safety Tips
According to the National Fire Protection
Association, heating sources are one of the
leading causes of house fires. Portable space
heaters are a convenient source of additional
heat for your home, but if not used properly can
pose a fire hazard.
Follow these tips to make sure your home is
heated safely:
Read the instructions and warning label
thoroughly.
Never leave a space heater unattended. Turn it
off when you leave the room or go to sleep.
Heaters should be kept at least 3 feet away from
anything that can burn including rugs and
clothing.
Do not place heaters in high traffic areas.
Do not use an extension cord or power strip.
Heaters should be plugged directly into a wall
outlet.
Always unplug and store heaters safely when
not in use.

The North Londonderry Township Highway Department is committed to
providing quality and efficient snow and ice removal for every storm. Crew
members work diligently before, during, and after a snow storm to keep roadways
safe for residents. We understand it is necessary for some residents to continue to
travel to and from work and appointments during a snow storm, but we ask
residents to stay off the road when possible. It is crucial for winter maintenance
plows to have full access to these areas.
Plows push snow off the road, they do not lift and carry, making it
unavoidable for plows to keep exposed driveways clear. We make every effort to
minimize the impact, however it is NOT the responsibility of the Township to clear
the end of your driveway once the plow has passed through. One helpful tip to
reduce the quantity of snow pushed back into your driveway, is to clear an area
directly to the left of your driveway along the curb line. This allows the current
accumulation on the plow to empty before reaching your driveway, reducing the
amount left behind as it passes.
Page 6
If you have a driveway, please use it.
The crew is instructed to clear as close to the
curb as possible to allow for two lanes of
traffic. If you do not have access to off-street
parking, we recommend parking all vehicles
on the same side of the street to allow for the
largest path to be cleared. When cars are
parked on both sides of the street it makes it
difficult for plows to maneuver.
When clearing sidewalks, pile snow
away from the road so it does not get pushed
back onto the sidewalk as plows pass by. It is
required by ordinance that residents clear
sidewalks within 24 hours of a storm's end.
Whether clearing your sidewalks or driveway,
remember it is illegal to shovel or blow snow
into the roadway.
We encourage residents to check the
stability of their mailbox post. Wet and heavy
snow released from a plow can damage a
weak or broken post. Residents are
responsible for repairing damage caused by
the force of the snow.
Every storm system is
unique and presents its own
challenges, so we adapt and
perform operations
accordingly.
