Summer Concert Series Features Free 4th of July Concert/BBQ and More

The summer concert season in Guttenberg is currently underway, with the inaugural show taking place at Waterfront Park on Wednesday, June 12. Local band Granton Ave played two sets in the amphitheater alongside the Hudson River, as the sun slowly set and the lights of Manhattan began to glow in the background.

Town Safeguarding Resident Safety by Cracking Down on Illegal Apartments

Illegal apartments and boarding houses are not permitted in the Town of Guttenberg. These are defined as dwellings where tenants are paying rent without the residence having a corresponding certificate of occupancy from the town’s Building Department, or where rooms were modified after a certificate of occupancy was granted.

These dwellings pose a serious health and safety risk, as well as causing quality of life issues for both residents and neighbors. For one thing, additional tenants can bring additional vehicles, meaning less street parking for other residents.

More importantly, buildings are designed for specific amounts of power usage based upon their stated occupancy. Additional tenants can overload the residence’s power grid, resulting in dangerous risk of fire.

Recent events in Guttenberg have illustrated the importance of ensuring that illegal apartments and boarding houses are not permitted to operate in town. As

a result the town is stepping up its policing of illegal apartments and assessing a minimum fine of $2,000 on landlords who are caught renting out illegal apartments and/or rooms.

But illegal landlords can face much more significant fees and consequences. Legally they may be required to return up to six months of rent if the tenants request it, to help the tenants relocate by covering moving costs, first month’s rent, security deposit, etc. In addition, even if the landlord has fire insurance, in the event of a fire the company may not pay if the building is being rented to tenants without the appropriate permits.

If you suspect a residence is being used as an illegal apartment or boarding house, please contact the Building Department so they can assess the potential risk to tenants and neighbors. Hello, summer! As always, we have a lot going on in Guttenberg during the warmer months, including our famous and popular Summer Concert Series. This year we’re hosting six great shows in three locations around town, including beautiful Waterfront Park. Check out the article inside for details, and don’t miss our exciting Fourth of July barbecue and concert in the park. You can also read about many of the recent events and activities in town, and see what’s in store for the future. Also please read the article above about illegal apartments. This is a critical issue and one the town is taking very seriously. Illegal apartments not only reduce the quality of life in the neighborhood, they pose a serious danger due to overcrowding and fire safety issues. The Building Department is doing its best to protect our residents and keep them safe. Please help them by letting us know if you are aware of any illegal apartments in town.

Guttenberg’s popular Summer Concert Series features five more shows this year. First up is a special Fourth of July barbecue and concert in Waterfront Park, beginning at 1 p.m. and featuring The Smooth Band Orchestra, a high-energy soul revue inspired by early R&B legends of the 1960s and ‘70s. Their complete Motown revue will take you back through the sounds of the Temptations, the Four Tops and many more. Free food will be available at a barbecue provided by the town.

Then on Tuesday, July 16 at 7 p.m. it’s over to Park Avenue and 68th Street for The Jersey Four, a tribute to Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. Featuring all the hits from the long career of the original “Jersey Boys,” the show features authentic costumes and musical equipment, along with humor, trivia, and audience participation.

Next up at 7 p.m. on July 30 in Waterfront Park is Slippery When Wet, the ultimate tribute to Jersey’s own Bon Jovi. Formed by Jon Bon Jovi lookalike Jason Morey in 2003, the band replicates the live arrangements of legendary Bon Jovi tours and has played over 1500 shows throughout the U.S., plus Africa, Mexico, Singapore, Puerto Rico, Honduras, and the Dominican Republic. They have headlined on over 60 cruises on the Royal Caribbean cruise line and played the pre-game of Super Bowl 48 in MetLife Stadium.

Following that is the return of local favorites The Infernos at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 20 on the big stage at 70th Street and Boulevard East. The Infernos put on a crowd-pleasing show that combines a full-tilt soul revue with the sounds of Sinatra and his contemporaries, and never fail to get the audience dancing. They have been together since 1977 and have played for President Obama and many other politicians, sharing the stage with the likes of Lady Gaga, Tony Bennett, Barry Manilow, and Chicago.

And finally the 2019 Guttenberg Summer Concert series concludes with the much anticipated Latin Night at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 70th Street and Boulevard East. This year’s headliner is singer and percussionist Jose Fajardo Jr, the son of acclaimed Cuban flautist and bandleader Jose Fajardo Sr. He has performed and recorded with some of the best Latin musicians of all time and in 2001, after the death of his father, he became the director of the orchestra his father established in 1949, helping to change the traditional sound of charanga music to salsa for a new generation. Fajardo will be will be whipping up a hot brew of classic Latin rhythms to turn Boulevard East into a street party.

Free Fitness Event Delivers High Energy Workout in

Waterfront Park

The morning started with boot camp, as several dozen residents and guests exercised hard, while DJ Ziggy Roman filled the air with driving music. Personal trainers Michael McCook and Anel Pla from Five Point Zero Fitness guided the crowd through a rigorous series of movements to kick off – literally – the first fitness event held in Waterfront Park.

Held on Saturday, June 15, the event also included Pilates and classes for “Buns of Steel” and “Functional Core.” Attendees brought their own mats and stretched out across the base of the amphitheater while the instructors led from a raised stage, as boats cruised up and down the river behind them and helicopters buzzed overhead.

Free samples, giveaways, and health & fitness-related information were available from numerous sponsors and vendors, including Athleta, Doterra, Just Water, Purely Juiced, Club Pilates, and Spa Society.

Beautiful weather resulted in a great turnout for the initial event. Based on the enthusiastic response, plans are underway for more sessions in the future.

Large Turnout for Annual Memorial Day Ceremony & BBQ

Warm spring weather over the Palisades made it a perfect day for a barbecue, as hundreds of residents and guests showed up for Guttenberg’s third annual Memorial Day Ceremony and BBQ on Monday, May 27.

The afternoon began with a tribute to the members of the U.S. Armed Forces who lost their lives in the service of their country. The ceremony took place in Monument Park on Boulevard East, which is dedicated to the memory of fallen hometown heroes throughout history. Over the last year-and-a-half the park has undergone significant revitalization and the monument was rededicated last Veteran’s Day.

Mayor Wayne Zitt addressed the Memorial Day crowd, saying, “I invite each of you to take a moment and reflect upon not only the sacrifices made by each individual listed on the monument but also the sacrifices of their families and all military families. I know I speak for our entire town when I say how grateful we are to all members of the armed services who have been lost throughout time. I also want to thank all of our present veterans who took up the call to serve our great country.”

Former Mayor Gerald Drasheff was among the many guests who attended the service, along with the entire town council, Assemblyman Pedro Mejia, and Assemblywoman Angelica Jimenez. Town Administrator Cosmo Cirillo served as emcee.

Many hundreds of hot dogs and hamburgers were grilled and given out free at the barbecue after the service, followed by free soft ice cream cones.

Over 100 8th Graders Graduate from Anna

Klein School

The large stage in the Gerald R. Drasheff Community Center gym was filled with yellow and blue gowns on Wednesday, June 19, as 103 students from Anna L. Klein School graduated from the 8th grade. Parents, relatives, friends, and supporters filled the seats and bleachers in the auditorium, frequently erupting in applause as educators and administrators spoke to praise the achievements of the graduating class.

School Principal Keith Petry served as master of ceremonies for the evening, introducing the guests, who then presented dozens of awards to the students, including scholarships to be used for future educational endeavors.

The 2019 valedictorian was Emily Olsen and the salutatorian was Daniel Adames. Special remarks were offered by graduate Frank Amador, who is autistic and received a standing ovation for his inspiring remarks.

The keynote speaker was former ALK graduate and recent graduate of the University of Connecticut, Sabit Nasir. Congratulatory remarks were offered by Mayor Wayne Zitt and Board of Education President Ruth Olsen.

Seniors Must RSVP for Free Hudson River

Cruise on July 12

Guttenberg senior citizens are once again invited to join a free cruise of the Hudson River on Friday, July 12 provided by the Hudson County Board of Chosen Freeholders and the Hudson County Office on Aging.

The Spirit Cruise vessel will leave from the dock in Weehawken and pass Hoboken, Jersey City, the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, the Freedom Tower, and head up the East River toward the Brooklyn Bridge before returning. A buffet meal is provided, along with dancing to a live DJ.

SEATING IS LIMITED and will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. For reservations RSVP to Marisol Montanez at 201-868-2315, ext. 152. Transportation to the ship is provided.

Register Now for Resource Center’s Summer Programs

Registration is open for summer programs and activities for children and adults at the Guttenberg Resource Center and the two North Bergen Free Public Library locations. Programs are available for adults and for children of all ages from babies to teens. Registration is open until July 13. Programs run from July 8 through Aug. 10.

Registration is also open for the Resource Center’s Summer Reading Program, “A Universe of Stories.” Children and teens up to 18 years old are encouraged to sign up to earn prizes for reading. Participating is easy. Registrants receive a reading chart that will be kept throughout the summer at the Resource Center. For every book read, a sticker will be added to the reading chart. Participants earn a prize for every five books they read.

Once an entire reading chart is finished, a star goes on the library’s finishers’ wall and the participant is entered to win a grand prize. They can also start another chart and keeping reading. Registration ends Aug. 23.

Registration is open to North Bergen and Guttenberg residents only (with certain exceptions). Proof of residency and library card are required. Registration is limited.

Community Space Dedicated to DPW Worker

Phil Lauler

On the first day of summer, June 21, 2019, friends, relatives, and coworkers of DPW worker Phil Lauler met to unveil a plaque dedicating a public space in his honor. Lauler, a longtime resident of the Guttenberg Housing Authority and a much-loved member of the community, passed away on Aug. 20, 2018.

The plaque, located in a plaza between the buildings at 136 69th Street and 6900 Broadway, was donated by the Housing Authority, who maintain the space.

Among those speaking at the ceremony were Lauler’s former coworker Jason Allgeier and Lauler’s niece Kelly Platt-Ferraro, who both remembered him as kind, friendly, outgoing, and always smiling. Also attending were Lauler’s sister, Sharon Platt, and Platt-Ferraro’s son, Christopher.

Housing Authority Director Carl Czaplicki hosted the tribute and recalled Lauler as someone dedicated to his community, a sentiment echoed by Town Administrator Cosmo Cirillo and Council Members Richie Delafuente and Monica Fundora.

Several of those in attendance wore Mets garb in honor of Lauler’s devotion to the team.

The plaza includes benches for residents to relax facing a pair of wooden planters recently added as part of the Housing Authority’s community garden project. Flowers were planted in early May and are thriving in the garden, brightening up the site.

The summer season officially kicked off on Friday, June 21 when the Resource Center held an ice cream party attended by a large group of kids and parents. About 40 kids signed up for the reading program, and everyone enjoyed free popsicles, ices, or soft ice cream cones from the Mikey’s Ice Cream truck parked in front of the Galaxy.

Mayor Cuts Ribbon for New Nail Salon on Park Avenue

As a highly enterprising youth, Cristy Avila opened her first nail salon at age 14 in her native Mexico, with the assistance of her brother. With a lifelong interest in nails, she got her license and thrived in the business.

Three years ago Cristy moved to the U.S. and got married, and on Saturday, June 22 she opened Tequila Nails at 6819 Park Avenue in Guttenberg. Mayor Wayne Zitt was on hand to cut the ribbon and offer his congratulations, along with Council Members Richie Delafuente, Monica Fundora, and John Habermann.

Tequila Nails, named after Cristy’s home town in the Mexican state of Jalisco (where tequila was born), offers manicures and pedicures, with a separate room in the rear for waxing. Formerly the site of a beauty salon and a barbershop, the site was beautifully renovated with comfortable seating and attractive decorations and accessories.

Guttenberg Joins Neighboring Municipalities for Flag Day

Parade and Ceremony

Bergenline Avenue was lined with residents waving the stars & stripes on Friday, June 14 as the 79th annual Flag Day Parade made its way from Braddock Park in North Bergen through Guttenberg and into West New York. After a ceremony in Miller Stadium, the evening concluded with the traditional burning of retired U.S. flags.

Guttenberg was well represented in the parade by Mayor Wayne Zitt, Council Members Richie Delafuente, Monica Fundora, and John Habermann, along with the Guttenberg Twirlers, the Guttenberg Recreation Department, and many town vehicles.

Mayor Zitt also served as emcee for the ceremony, with North Bergen Mayor Nicholas Sacco leading the Pledge of Allegiance and newly elected West New York Mayor Gabriel Rodriguez offering the welcome address. As a special treat, Lance Corporal Steven Ramirez of the U.S. Marine Corps, who had returned from serving overseas just days earlier, presented to his hometown of West New York a flag that had been flown over the command post of Task Force Southwest in Camp Shorab, Helmand Province, Afghanistan.

La temporada de conciertos de verano en Guttenberg está actualmente en curso, con el espectáculo inaugural que tendrá lugar en Parque Waterfront el Miércoles 12 de Junio. La popular Serie de Conciertos de Verano de Guttenberg presenta cinco espectáculos más este año. Evento de Acondicionamiento Físico Gratuito que Ofrece Entrenamiento de alta Energía en el Parque Waterfront

La mañana comenzó con el campamento de entrenamiento, ya que varias docenas de residentes e invitados hicieron mucho ejercicio, mientras que el DJ Ziggy Roman llenó el aire con música de conducción. Los entrenadores personales Michael McCook y Anel Pla de Five Point Zero Fitness guiaron a la multitud a través de una serie de movimientos rigurosos para iniciar, literalmente, el primer evento de acondicionamiento celebrado en el Parque Waterfront.

El evento, que se llevó a cabo el Sábado 15 de Junio, también incluyó Pilates y clases para “Bollos de acero” y “Núcleo funcional”. Los asistentes trajeron sus propios tapetes y se estiraron a través de la base del anfiteatro mientras los instructores dirigían desde un escenario elevado, como los barcos recorrían el río detrás de ellos y los helicópteros volaban por encima.

Numerosos patrocinadores y proveedores, incluyendo Athleta, Doterra, Just Water, Purely Juiced, Club Pilates y Spa Society, pudieron obtener muestras gratuitas, obsequios e información relacionada con la salud y el estado físico.

El hermoso clima resultó en una gran participación para el evento inicial. Sobre la base de la respuesta entusiasta, los planes están en marcha para más sesiones en el futuro.

Centro de Recursos

La inscripción está abierta para programas de verano y actividades para niños y adultos en el Centro de Recursos Guttenberg y en las dos ubicaciones de la Biblioteca Pública de North Bergen. Los programas están disponibles para adultos y para niños de todas las edades, desde bebés hasta adolescentes. La inscripción está abierta hasta el 13 de Julio. Los programas se ejecutan desde el 8 de Julio hasta el 10 de Agosto.

La inscripción también está abierta para el Programa de Lectura de Verano del Centro de Recursos, “Un universo de historias”. Se anima a los niños y adolescentes de hasta 18 años a inscribirse para ganar premios por la lectura. Participar es fácil. Los inscritos reciben una tabla de lectura que se mantendrá durante todo el verano en el Centro de Recursos. Por cada libro leído, se agregará una etiqueta al cuadro de lectura. Los participantes ganan un premio por cada cinco libros que leen.

Una vez que se termina una tabla de lectura completa, una estrella se coloca en el muro de los finalistas de la biblioteca y se ingresa al participante para ganar un gran premio. También pueden comenzar otra tabla y seguir leyendo. La inscripción termina el 23 de Agosto.

La inscripción está abierta únicamente a los residentes de North Bergen y Guttenberg (con ciertas excepciones). Se requiere comprobante de residencia y tarjeta de la biblioteca. La inscripción es limitada.

Las Personas Mayores Deben Confirmar su Asistencia para el Crucero Gratuito por el Río

Hudson del 12 de Julio

Las personas mayores de Guttenberg son nuevamente invitadas a unirse a un crucero gratuito por el Río Hudson el Viernes 12 de Julio proporcionado por la Junta de Elegidos Titulares del Condado de Hudson y la Oficina de Envejecimiento del Condado de Hudson.

El barco de cruceros Spirit saldrá del muelle en Weehawken y pasará Hoboken, Jersey City, la Estatua de la Libertad, la Isla Ellis, la Torre de la Libertad y el río East hasta el puente de Brooklyn antes de regresar. Se ofrece una comida buffet, junto con baile con un DJ en vivo.

Espacio Comunitario Dedicado al Trabajador de DPW

Phil Lauler

El primer día de verano, el 21 de Junio de 2019, amigos, familiares y compañeros de trabajo del trabajador de DPW, Phil Lauler, se reunieron para revelar una placa dedicando un espacio público en su honor. Lauler, residente de la Autoridad de Vivienda de Guttenberg y un miembro muy querido de la comunidad, falleció el 20 de Agosto de 2018.

La placa, ubicada en una plaza entre los edificios en 136 calle 69 y 6900 Broadway, fue donada por la Autoridad de Vivienda, que mantiene el espacio.

Entre los que hablaron en la ceremonia se encontraban el antiguo compañero de trabajo de Lauler, Jason Allgeier y su sobrina, Kelly Platt-Ferraro, quienes lo recordaron como amable, amigable, sociable y siempre sonriente. También asistieron la hermana de Lauler, Sharon Platt, y el hijo de Platt-Ferraro, Christopher.

El Director de la Autoridad de Vivienda, Carl Czaplicki, fue el anfitrión del homenaje y recordó a Lauler como alguien dedicado a su comunidad, al igual que el Administrador Municipal Cosmo Cirillo y los Miembros del Concejo Richie Delafuente y Monica Fundora.

Varios de los asistentes llevaban vestimenta de los Mets en honor a la devoción de Lauler por el equipo.

La plaza incluye bancos para que los residentes se relajen frente a un par de maceteros de madera recientemente agregados como parte del proyecto de jardín comunitario de la Autoridad de Vivienda. Las flores se plantaron a principios de mayo y están prosperando en el jardín, iluminando el sitio.

Escuela Anna Klein

El gran escenario en el gimnasio del Centro Comunitario Gerald R. Drasheff se llenó de vestidos amarillos y azules el Miércoles 19 de Junio, cuando 103 estudiantes de la Escuela Anna L. Klein se graduaron del 8º grado. Los padres, familiares, amigos y simpatizantes llenaron los asientos y las gradas en el auditorio, con frecuencia estallando en aplausos cuando los educadores y administradores hablaron para elogiar los logros de los graduados.

El Director de la escuela, Keith Petry, se desempeñó como maestro de ceremonias durante la noche, presentando a los invitados, quienes luego entregaron docenas de premios a los estudiantes, incluidas las becas que se utilizarán para futuros proyectos educativos.

El especialista en estudios del 2019 fue Emily Olsen y el Salutatorian fue Daniel Adames. Los comentarios especiales fueron ofrecidos por el graduado Frank Amador, quien es autista y recibió una gran ovación por sus comentarios inspiradores.

Guttenberg se Une a los Municipios Vecinos para el

Desfile y la Ceremonia del día de la Bandera

La avenida Bergenline estaba llena de residentes que agitaban las estrellas y las rayas el Viernes 14 de Junio, cuando el desfile anual del Día de la Bandera número 79 se abría camino desde el Parque Braddock en North Bergen a través de Guttenberg y hacia West New York. Después de una ceremonia en el Miller Stadium, la noche concluyó con la quema tradicional de banderas retiradas de los EE. UU.

Guttenberg estuvo bien representado en el desfile por el Alcalde Wayne Zitt, los miembros del Concejo Richie Delafuente, Monica Fundora y John Habermann, junto con los Guttenberg Twirlers, el Departamento de Recreación de Guttenberg y muchos vehículos de la ciudad.

El Alcalde Zitt también se desempeñó como maestro de ceremonias para la ceremonia, con el Alcalde de North Bergen Nicholas Sacco dirigiendo el juramento de lealtad y el recién elegido Alcalde de West New York Gabriel Rodríguez ofreciendo el discurso de bienvenida. Como un regalo especial, el cabo Steven Ramírez, del Cuerpo de Marines de los EE. UU., Quien había regresado de servir en el extranjero unos días antes, presentó a su ciudad natal de West New York una bandera que había sobrevolado el puesto de comando de la Fuerza de Tarea Suroeste en Camp Shorab Provincia de Helmand, Afganistán.

El Alcalde Corta la Cinta para un Nuevo Salón de Uñas

en Park Avenue

Como una joven muy emprendedora, Cristy Avila abrió su primer salón de uñas a los 14 años en su México natal, con la ayuda de su hermano. Con un interés permanente en las uñas, obtuvo su licencia y prosperó en el negocio.

Hace tres años, Cristy se mudó a los Estados Unidos y se casó, y el Sábado 22 de Junio abrió Tequila Nails en 6819 Park Avenue en Guttenberg. El Alcalde Wayne Zitt estuvo presente para cortar la cinta y felicitarla, junto con los miembros del Concejo Richie Delafuente, Monica Fundora y John Habermann.

Tequila Nails, que lleva el nombre de la ciudad natal de Cristy en el estado Mexicano de Jalisco (donde nació el tequila), ofrece manicuras y pedicuras, con una habitación separada en la parte trasera para encerar. Anteriormente el sitio de un salón de belleza y una barbería, el sitio fue bellamente renovado con cómodos asientos y atractivas decoraciones y accesorios.

La temporada de verano comenzó oficialmente el Viernes 21 de Junio, cuando el Centro de Recursos organizó una fiesta de helados a la que asistió un gran grupo de niños y padres. Alrededor de 40 niños se inscribieron en el programa de lectura, y todos disfrutaron de paletas de hielo, helados o conos de helado gratuitos del camión de helados Mikey’s estacionado frente al Galaxy.
