    recreation programs, activities and special events. We are confident you will be satisfied with our

    Somers Recreation Department complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

    be implemented in the most integrated setting possible, appropriate for each individual. Persons

    with disabilities are encouraged to contact the Somers Recreation Department at least two weeks

    Weather Cancellation Policy

    The Somers Recreation Department follows the Somers School District inclement weather policy.

    So if schools are closed, recreation activities are cancelled. Tune into WFSB Channel 3 for the

    most recently updated information. Make up classes will be schedule based on facility and

    instructor availability.

    Participant Behavior

    Participants are expected to exhibit appropriate behavior at all times. Participants shall behave in a

    safe and responsible manner, show courtesy and respect to other participants, volunteers, staff and

    treat equipment and facilities with care.

  • Program Information

    The Somers Recreation Department reserves

    the right to reschedule, relocate, or cancel any

    announced program due to

    facility availability and public response. The

    Recreation Department may also establish

    minimum or maximum class sizes to ensure

    appropriate instructor-to-participant ratios.

    Registration Information

    There are three ways to register for a program,

    online, in-person, mail-in.

    1. Most programs allow for online

    registration. Visit our website and Login as a

    Member, or Register as a New Member. You

    will input your information, choose all the

    programs you wish to register for, and will be

    able to pay by credit card.

    2. You may mail in a registration form

    (available on our website) and payment to our

    office.

    3. You may register in-person at the

    office during business hours.

    4. Phone registrations are not accepted

    for any programs.

    5. Registration is accepted on a first-

    come, first-serve basis and class sizes are

    limited. Programs will be canceled if

    registration does not meet the minimum.

    Payment

    Payment must be made in full at the time of

    registration, without exception. We accept cash

    and checks made payable to Somers

    Recreation. Returned checks will be charged

    a bank fee.

    website content. Any participant, or parent of

    youth participant, who wishes to not have a

    photograph of them used must notify the

  • Sprouting Melodies® is an award-winning early childhood music program coming to Somers

    CT!!! It is the only early childhood music program created by music therapists and offered through

    board certified music therapists who complete the early childhood training.

    Sprouting Melodies® offers a distinctly different, research-based approach to infant and toddler

    music classes. Age-specific classes for infants, toddlers, siblings and preschoolers include songs,

    instrument play and movement that encourage musical, social, physical, and emotional growth and

    development.

    Classes are provided by Renee Coro, board certified music therapist and owner of Harmonious

    Happenings Music Therapy Services. Renee has experience working with young children of all

    abilities and welcomes everyone to join in on this dynamic, interactive program as both you and

    your child will benefit from this experience.

    Classes will run for six weeks every Monday beginning April 15th and ending on May 20th at the

    Kibbe Fuller Community Center on Rt. 190 in Somers.

    Sprouting Melodies 3- (18-36 months): 9-9:45am

    Family Sprouts- for families with siblings (ages 0-5): 10-10:45am

    Sprouting Melodies 2- (6-18 months): 11-11:45am

    ZUMBA

    TONING

    When it comes to body sculpting, Zumba® Toning raises the

    bar (or rather, the toning stick). It combines targeted body-

    sculpting exercises and high-energy cardio work with Latin-

    infused Zumba moves to create a calorie-torching, strength-

    training dance fitness-party. Students learn how to use

    lightweight, maraca-like Toning Sticks to enhance rhythm and

    tone all their target zones, including arms, abs and thighs.

    YOGA Through the Ages…. Very Gentle yoga class, modified to accommodate individual levels of physical ability. Join

    Kripalu-certified yoga instructor, Pat Baker, for a slow, mindful approach to both strengthen

    and relax the body. Yoga can significantly enhance physical energy, increase balance and flexi-

    bility, reduce stress and anxiety. Age with energy and vitality.

    Gentle Yoga is taught by Kripalu certified instructor Pat Baker. A gentle, therapeutic yoga,

    fully instructed, including modifications. This gentle class is designed for individuals who have

    little or no yoga experience, or the experienced yogi to safely explore one’s practice. You will

    learn breathing techniques while practicing basic yoga postures. An enjoyable series of stretch-

    es and movements leave you energized and relaxed.

    2013 SOMERS SUMMER SERIES

    A fun, family friendly, grass-roots weekly 5k race series taking place on

    the Somers High School Cross Country Course!

    Great way to get in shape for the Somers Great Escape on September 14th!

    When: Every Wednesday night, July 24 through September 11

    Time: Registration opens at 5:15 / Race starts at 6:15 – Rain or shine!

    Place: Somers High School parking lot nearest the outdoor track

    Entry Fee: Adults -$8.00 per race, at the door Children 10 & Under – Free

    Full Series -$58 -includes bib & chip and one free race! Must be paid by

    7/24. -Paid online at: www.somers.recdesk/recdeskportal/ -Checks: SNE-

    Bib & Chip Fee: Each race will be digitally timed. At your first race, eve-

    ryone will be assigned a bib and timing chip that you will use for each race

    in the series. There will be a one-time charge of $2 the first time you regis-

    ter to cover the cost of the bib and chip. Don’t lose your bib and chip! If

    you do, you’ll need to buy a replacement for another $2.

    Awards & Prizes will be given out weekly to the overall & age group win-

    ners. Grand Prix: At the end of the Series, the top male & female scorers

  • The Somers Recreation Department offers endless opportunities for your child to have a fun

    and memorable camp experience. Our day camp program is designed to spark your child’s im-

    agination, grow new friendships, and assist them in discovering new talents each and every

    day. With creatively-planned activities, campers enjoy summer to the fullest extent. With

    weekly field trips and themes, your child(ren) are sure to have a great time!

    Camp Sessions are held Monday through Friday from 9:00am-3:00pm.

    Camp is held at the Field Road Park. Counselors are CPR and First Aid Certified.

  • The Somers Recreation Department invites our youngest campers to Small Fry Camp! Our

    fantastic staff of trained counselors will guide your child(ren) through our action packed days

    of songs, stories, games, snacks, arts and crafts and indoor and outdoor activities. Weekly

    Themes, Daily Outside Play, and Special Theme Days add to the fun!

    Camp Sessions are held Monday through Friday from 9:00am-12:00pm.

    Join Ken McCarthy, SHS Varsity Lacrosse Coach for this exciting camp!

    Campers of all ages and abilities will have fun and improve their game by

    learning the fundamental skills, advanced tactics and techniques of lacrosse.

    Boys are separated into the following age groups:

    Boys entering grades 4-6

    Boys entering grades 7-9

    Fee: 125.00, includes camp jersey!!

  • SWISH School of Basketball Camp

    Emphasis will be placed on learning individual offensive and defensive skills, such

    as shooting technique, footwork, dribbling, and ball handling skills. Each day

    campers will participate in a team game, through which they will further develop

    their understanding of basketball tactics and teamwork.

    John Hostetler, the boys coach at Somers High School is hosting SWISH Basket-

    ball camp for its 9th year! He is licensed to coach by the State of Connecticut and

    is CPR and 1st Aid Certified.

    SOCCER CAMP

    UKISC Mini Camp For the youngest players just beginning the game. Our programs focus on fun, exciting games to

    build confidence and teach the fundamentals, with maximum participation in a fun oriented envi-

    ronment.

    UK Classic Enhances player’s technical development & skill building in a stimulating environment. Players are challenged to con-

    sider basic tactical components at an age appropriate level, including attacking and defending principles. For those

    that are 11-14, the programs are aimed towards developing players both technically and tactically, which include ses-

    sions that help improve players decision making.

  • TENNIS CAMPS This camp is directed by Conrad McIntire Jr. who is a nationally known speaker on “Creative

    Ways to Teach Modern Tennis Strokes”, having presented at the World Tennis Symposium, The

    World Tennis Conference, The Florida State Convention and the New England Tennis Conven-

    tion. He has also achieved a Pro-1 certification rating with both the USPTA and PTR, a distinc-

    tion held by less than 8% of tennis pros world wide. Reiny Maier, director of prestigious Nike

    Tennis Camp has called him one of the :most imaginative, and creative tennis pro’s I have ever

    met! He makes learning Tennis FUN”. His staff is specially trained and his program motto is

    ...FUN, FITNESS, FRIENDS FOR LIFE!...

    Teaching children tennis offers a gift for life, as

    unlike many other sports, tennis offers health and

    social benefits for a lifetime! This program breaks

    children into groups by age and skill levels and

    utilizes the latest guidelines to teach the younger

    Come join the High School Art Teachers for fun filled Art Courses! They offer spe-

    cialized art instruction for students in grades 2 though ADULT! CLASS descriptions

    on the next few pages. Fee is $105 per session.

    Instructor Profiles:

    *Mary Curran has taught art at every grade level, K-12, in public schools since 1981. Currently teaching

    at Somers High School, she holds a BFA/ed from the University of Massachusetts/Amherst with a studio

    emphasis in Printmaking. A long time resident of Tucson, Arizona, Mary has recently returned to her roots

    in New England. As an artist, she has worked in a wide variety of art media including costume design, large

    -scale mural and mosaic installation, primitive pottery firing, landscape and portrait drawing, and more re-

    cently, a concentration in ceramics. Her work can be seen at lightundergroundstudio.com

    *Sarah Burda taught privately and worked as a rare book conservator before becoming a public school art

    educator in 2003. Sarah received her BFA from Syracuse University with a concentration in Printmaking

    and Ceramics, as well as a MALS fine art from Wesleyan University, and has been teaching Ceramics and

    Sculpture at SHS since 2005. [email protected]

    *Kyle Kipfer taught a variety of summer and private art courses while studying Illustration at the Universi-

    ty of Connecticut in Storrs. After completing his BFA at UConn Kyle worked in the field of graphic design

    before returning to school at Central Connecticut State University to acquire his Art Education teaching cer-

    tification. Kyle continues to work as a freelance graphic designer and illustrator while teaching part time

    and coaching freshman basketball and Unified Sports at Somers High School.

  • CLAY CLUB 1: Week 1/morning

    CLAY CLUB 2: Week 2/morning Elementary:

    We will have a clayful, playful week of delightfully muddy hands making art with clay!

    Using pinch, coil and slab techniques and all kinds of tools, we will make everything from bowls to planters to wind

    chimes and dragons! New twists on past projects included!

    CLAY CLUB 1 must be taken before CLAY CLUB 2. Products from Clay Club 1 will be fired once and not glazed.

    During Clay Club 2, Colorful slip and glazes will be used to finish the work that was made during Clay Club 1.

    PRINTMAKING: Week 1/afternoon Elementary:

    Long before computers and copy machines, things were printed by hand.

    Artists still do that! In this class, we will make original artwork that multiplies when we print it by hand! We will

    make stencils and stamps and use found and funny objects, foam and even textured collages to create beautiful things

    including cards

    and wrapping paper….we will even print on clay pots and T-shirts*!!!

    (*Bring at least one plain t-shirt to print on…or more if you want to!)

    SCULPTURE: Week 2/afternoon Elementary:

    In this fun, exciting, hands on class, we will bring a new “dimension” to our work by exploring the wonderful world

    of sculpture! We will play with clay, paper mache and many more materials to build amazing sculptures. Bring your

    imagination and prepare to create! If you took this class last year, we will be mixing it up with some new and

    different projects!

    Instructor: Mary Curran NATURE ART: Week 3/morning Elementary:

    This is a class for you nature and art lovers like me! We will use nature for our inspiration, our ideas and even our

    materials! We will paint, draw and even use some clay as we create incredible, nature themed artwork in this active

    and exciting class!

    DRAWING AND PAINTING: Week 3/afternoon Elementary:

    Spend your afternoon perfecting your artistic skills! In this class students will learn how to use line, value, texture

    and color in a variety of media to sharpen their drawing and painting skills. Using pencil, charcoal, pastels and wa-

    tercolor, we will practice cool techniques and produce fantastic artwork! All students will get their own sketchbook

    and drawing tools to keep! If you took this last year, bring your old sketchbook (if there’s still lots of room in it) and

    take $5 off the materials fee! We will explore new things this year!

    ANIMAL ART: Week 4/morning Elementary:

    Do you LOVE animals? Do you love ART? ME TOO!!

    In this critter filled class, we will paint, draw, print, make masks and use clay

    to make all kinds of animals! While we create, we will learn new things about

    funny and amazing animals! If you took this class last year, we will be mixing

    it up with some different projects!

    BOOKS!: Week 1/morning, Week 3/afternoon Middle School through Adult: In this age of texting and Facebook, a welcome break can be had by opening a book.

    Or even better, by making your own! In this course we will explore visual storytelling along with bookmaking tech-

    niques to create unique pieces of art. Traditional and experimental structures will be demonstrated; drawing, painting,

    lettering and collage are a few of the techniques to be explored. Come have fun bringing your stories to life this sum-

    mer!

    CLAY! A: Week 1/afternoon and 3/morning

    CLAY! B: Week 2/afternoon and 4/morning Middle School through Adult: These courses are designed for the art student who has some clay experience but would like to explore new or differ-

    ent techniques! A fun, creative introduction to handbuliding and/or wheel throwing, all ideas, both sculptural and

    functional are encouraged!! Clay A will cover underglazing (applying color to wet clay) and texturing of surfaces.

    Clay B will allow for more in-depth wheel and overglaze exploration. Finished work will be dried and fired at the end

    of Clay A to be picked up as is -- or will be stored to be worked on and glazed in Clay B the following week.

    DRAWING: Week 2/morning, Week 3/afternoon Middle School through Adult: Do you love to draw? Do you wish you could draw what you see exactly how it looks?

    Then this class is for you!! Using techniques from brain research and classic drawing lessons, we will investigate tech-

    niques to help you observe and draw the world as you see it. Experienced students will enjoy new techniques and the

    emphasis will be on developing “mad skills” while having a fun, relaxing time!!

    All students will get their own sketchbook and drawing tools to keep!

    PAINTING: Week 1/morning, Week 4/afternoon Middle School through Adult: This class will focus on the element of color in a multitude of painting media. Students

    will create original work in a variety of media such as watercolor, tempera and acrylic on special papers and canvas,

    and will explore all the nuances each medium has to offer. Experienced students will enjoy stretching their skills with

    new techniques. If you love color, you will love learning new ways to use it!

    This fun, skill intensive program is designed for

    beginning to intermediate players. In addition to the

    technical basketball skills, our basketball staff will

    focus on respect, teamwork and responsibility.

    WHAT: Camp CONNRI is situated on 272 acres of rolling hills, overlooking a pristine 50 acre

    lake in Ashford, Connecticut. Campers enjoy a wide variety of activities including: swimming,

    hiking, fishing, kayaking, baseball, softball, basketball, volleyball, nature studies, arts and crafts,

    low ropes, geocaching and much more. The camp offers a safe, Christian environment that nour-

    ishes each child's physical growth, mental maturity, and spiritual enthusiasm. Activities are under

    the supervision of certified, experienced personnel, where the safety and welfare of all campers is

    a primary concern of every staff member.

  • YMCA CAMP OFFERINGS

    Swimming, fun, and friends is what Camp Indian Valley is all about. At Camp

    Indian Valley campers have a great camp experience right at the Indian Valley

    YMCA. Our caring and well trained counselors lead campers through fun activ-

    ities such as games, arts and crafts, and science and nature! Campers also get to

    swim every day in the Indian Valley Family YMCA pool in Ellington! Each

    session campers will celebrate a theme day and will have a special event such

    as a moonbounce, a magic show, or musical entertainment! Campers are broken

    down in three separate groups based on age.

    Nipmunks: For campers entering K – 2nd Grade

    Day Camp is a whole new experience for younger campers! Nipmunk campers will be intro-

    duced to the adventure of camp while getting the special attention our younger campers

    need. All activities are designed with the interest of your younger camper in mind.

    Chippewas: For campers entering 3rd – 5th Grade

    Chippewa campers enjoy choosing among a variety of age-appropriate and fun activities.

    Activities are more challenging to capture the interest of our older campers. Campers will

    have the opportunity to learn new skills and create many friendships and memories.

    Mohegans: For campers entering 6th – 8th Grade

    Mohegan campers will enjoy the best of what Camp Indian Valley has to ofer. Activities will

    be adapted to meet the needs of our oldest campers. These campers will be given weekly op-

    portunities to be mentors to our youngest campers through our mentoring activity.

  • It's not just a camp, it's an adventure! Swimming, arts and crafts, archery, boating,

    outdoor cooking, sports and games, nature activities, music, and drama are among

    the many activities we offer. Certain activities may be limited to certain age groups.

    Each camper is grouped according to age and is assigned a counselor to promote a

    sense of belonging, teamwork, and friendship. Campers will be broken into the

    following age groups:

    Quinnipiacs: For Campers entering 1st & 2nd grade

    What a great introduction to outdoor camping. Quinnipiac campers will be guided

    through the outdoors by our skilled and experienced counselors. Exploration of

    nature, arts and crafts, and small group games are highlights of the Quinnipiac

    camper day. Quinnipacs will also take part in our camper mentor program.

    Cherokees: For campers entering 3rd, 4th & 5th grades

    As campers get older they are able to experience more of what our spectacular camp

    has to ofer. Cherokee campers will gain the ability to try archery and boating. They

    will play larger team games, more detailed arts and craft projects, and look deeper

    into what nature has to ofer them.

    Pequots: For campers entering 6th, 7th, & 8th grades

    As our group of oldest campers, Pequots will get to experiencee everything that

    Yankee Trails has to ofer. They will take on leadership roles in our camper mentor

    program. They will explore almost every inch of our 100+ acres and create larger

    craft projects such as shelter building.

    At Yankee Trails, it is our goal to make a positive impact on each camper as they

    experience the beautiful, natural world of Yankee Trails. Daily transportation is

    offered from 10 locations in the Indian Valley area.
