Page 2: TOWN FUNDING REVENUE · ANNUAL REPORT INFOGRAPHIC ... knowledge, skills, tips and independence from abuse and violence. If the success of our organization is measured by our ability

From the Executive Director“In the unceasing ebb and flow of justice and oppression we must all dig channels as best we may, so that at the propitious moment somewhat of the swelling tide may be conducted to the barren places of life.” Jane Addams, Twenty years at Hull House

Dear Friends, Allies and Supporters,Over the past year, as a nation we continue to see high profile sexual assault and domestic violence reported in the media, telling the stories that so many in our community tell every day in the private and confidential con-fines of Independence House offices where they come for safety, relief, belief, unburdening, healing, education, knowledge, skills, tips and independence from abuse and violence.

If the success of our organization is measured by our ability to meet these needs for survivors, then we have had much success this past year as we pursued our mission with conviction, passion, integrity, purpose, and a laser like focus with the sole intention of meeting the self-identified goals of individual survivors, families and communities. The contributions of our dedicated staff, volunteers, board, and you our donors, supporters and funders cannot be overstated, but our true success lies in all the ways that we have effectively contributed to survivors’ goals of independence, safety, well-being and healing from the havoc wreaked by domestic and sexual violence, and we have led with a clear and sustained commitment to be a force for leadership and action on community education and prevention of domestic and sexual violence. Our mission is ALIVE and remains and grows more relevant even after 38 years!

This lived mission is seen every day in the restoration of a smile to the eyes of a child exposed to violence after spending time with our child witness to violence counselors; we see it when survivors of sexual assault with the help of our rape crisis counselors reclaim their personal power and choose to tell the world that they now know they are not responsible for sexual violence inflicted upon them, and furthermore they are now “ready to give back”… and do so through volunteerism in various capacities; we know we have achieved success when survi-vors of domestic and sexual violence send us unsolicited letters to share their lives and tell us that for the first time in months or years they are finally safe physically, mentally, emotionally and psychologically, and that the work that our domestic violence counseling and advocacy and SAFEPLAN staff and programs provided, helped them to achieve those outcomes.

We are proud of our additional key organizational accomplishments this past year. These accomplishments achieved through extraordinary teamwork and outstanding dedication helps to ensure that Independence House remains an effective resource and a thought leader on issues of domestic and sexual violence in the years to come.

Among these accomplishment are surviving a rigorous competitive bidding process and securing funding for the next 10 years for seven meaningful life transforming core programs for survivors, decisively affirming our 38 years of leadership and long standing commitment to domestic and sexual violence survivors. Included in these seven programs is our new emergency residence for survivors who in order to save their lives and avoid serious injury are forced from their own residences. In addition, we maintain our 24/7/365 hotline, and are providing full scale 5-day staff coverage and programs at our satellite offices across the entire county. Our programs and education and prevention activities are executed by our stellar staff who show up every day for survivors, and our community, and they carry out our mission with enthusiasm, knowledge, skills and respect for the experiences and wisdom of survivors.

Our staff and our organization is as strong and effective as it has ever been, and we are figuratively wrapped in the arms of all of you, our supporters who help to give life to our mission as we work in partnership and solidarity towards the community and world we all envision, one free from all forms of violence, including domestic and sexual violence.

Warm regards,

Lysetta Hurge-Putnam MSW, LICSW Executive Director

I am Bailey … and this is my story … “I did not know that I was strong and capable, when I made that first call to the Independence Hotline over a year ago. I felt broken, less than, degraded and worthless inside. You could not tell by looking at me that I was a victim of domestic violence and past sexual assault as a child. I looked pretty put together, and sounded smart (I think?). The day that I made the call was a culmination of 5 years of ongoing physical violence, constant name calling, threats, and intimidation. I was in constant fear that I would die one of these days… and I almost did. Over the weekend before that life-saving call, my husband accused me of not being attentive enough to him; he grabbed me by my hair, twisted my arm behind my back and at one point choked me to the point where I was on the verge of blacking out. The worst part about it is that my children saw the whole thing. He did not care. After the incident was over, I had a moment of clarity, realizing I could most likely die before my 45th birthday. I knew about Independence House, but always told myself others needed them more than I did. I was wrong. The lady that answered the hotline was kind, and caring, she knew just when to listen and when to speak. Right on the phone she helped me to take the first steps. When I asked about a restraining order, she helped me to get in touch with one of the Independence House court advocates, who in turn helped me to apply for a restraining order which the judge granted. After I got that settled, I started going to weekly individual and group counseling, and my two boys started going to the children’s program. The staff at Independence House is amazing; I felt that they genuinely cared about me and my children’s well-being. As I was finally able to let everything out, I started to understand myself better, I learned about healthy relationships, personal power, self-care, and I have become a much better parent to my children. I am so sorry for the terrible abuse they witnessed and I am grateful that they too are on the road to recovery. They are calmer, smile more and hug me spontaneously.

Today, I am living on my own and I have custody of my children. Independence House helped me to figure out a security deposit and first and last month’s rent. I was petrified at the thought of asking him for anything, or being under his control. Every day, I am getting stronger, more confident and healing from my scars from my childhood and from the abuse. My Independence House advocate tells me I did all the work, but honestly, the people at Independence House saved my life and I will be forever grateful. Thanks to them I am becoming the person I have always wanted to be... strong, kind, happy, smart, confident, and a good mom.”

Remarks from Independence House Board Vice President …Dear Friends,Independence House, Inc. is the largest private non-profit agency on Cape Cod that addresses domestic and sexual violence, through prevention, advocacy, education, counseling, mentorship, and temporary residential housing for individuals and families throughout Cape Cod. Although our organization works diligently to assist survivors, our #1 goal is to eradicate domestic and sexual violence permanently in our society, and to provide citizens with the tools to achieve that end.

With expanded funding for an emergency safe residence, Independence House has increased its capacity to help survivors of domestic and sexual violence achieve physical, mental, emotional and psychological safety. This expansion realizes one of our key strategic objectives of advancing our leadership as a comprehensive and effective full service organization that enhances and helps survivors of domestic and sexual violence and their families achieve the quality of life they are entitled to.

Our Hyannis office is a veritable beehive of activity with advocacy, education and counseling sessions for adults and children, meetings, trainings, our 24/7 hotline, a children’s counseling and library area and a food pantry. Our satellite offices in Orleans, Provincetown and Falmouth allow survivors access to locations convenient to them.

Our Agency’s work does not end at the office doors however. We work closely with our partners in the community who pursue the goal of justice, safety, healing, education and prevention. These partners include the Cape & Islands District Attorney’s Office, Cape Cod Hospital & SANE Nursing Staff, high schools, and many other groups and organizations committed to social justice to enact change so that domestic and sexual violence comes to an end.

The Board of Directors is extremely proud of the nearly 40 years of dedicated service our organization has given to survivors on Cape Cod, and believe we have never been stronger in assisting survivors to end the scourge of domestic and sexual violence. We see first-hand the dedication, passion, and commitment of our leadership and our service team, and we are confident that Independence House is poised to continue its outstanding service to our community for many years to come.

In Peace, Sandra Faiman-Silva, PhD.; Vice President of the Independence House Board of Directors
