“Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure – pressed down, shaken together, running over – will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.” – Luke 6:38

If you’ve never volunteered for the Six Super Saturdays of Service, then you are missing an opportunity to not only be the hands and feet of Christ in the community but also a chance to be doubly-blessed in return with joy, new friendships, and amazing insights.

There are plenty of service opportunities for people of all ages from tying no-sew blankets and baking cookies for the Kairos Prison Ministry, to partnering with Toledo Campus Ministries and Cass Community Social Services, to sorting goods at the Toledo Northwestern Ohio Food Bank and working outdoors at Secor Metropark, Scottwood Garden, or The University Church.

Special events include assisting with Sunshine’s Walk, Run, and Roll on Friday, September 5 or Saturday, September 6 (additional registration required), donating blood during the American Red Cross blood drive on August, 30 (see pages 14-15 for details), and helping out at the S.T.A.R.S. East Side Central Festival on September 20.

Super Saturdays run August 23 through September 27. Volunteer time slots vary depending on the project. See pages 14-15 for a synopsis of events – and bring your friends and neighbors!

Information forms and registration forms are available in the Narthex on Sundays and online at www.epworth.com.

COFFEE MEETINGS WITH PASTOR DOUG DAMRONBeginning at the end of July and through October, our Staff Parish Relations Committee will be facilitating a series of coffee meetings in the Lounge, or church member’s home, to allow the congregation to meet with and get to know Pastor Doug and for him to get to know our congregation.

We encourage all members to attend one of these meetings.

Signup are located in the Cloister on Sundays. If you would like to attend a meeting but are unable to sign up on Sundays, e-mail Marla ([email protected]) in the church office.

If you would like to host a meeting in your home, or if you need childcare, please indicate that at the time of signup.

BLESSINGS & ANNOUNCEMENTS

DO YOU KNOW?Molly Chapman has a nearly perfect worship attendance record! Virtually every Sunday morning you will see Molly’s smiling face in the last pew on the left hand side of the Sanctuary during the 9:45 service.

Molly is an outstanding example of choosing to make worshiping God a priority in life….and she does this at age 101! (Makes all our feeble excuses for not being in church on Sundays sound pretty puny, right?)

Actually, Molly will very soon be celebrating her 102nd birthday….on August 21. What about sending her a card to help her celebrate the joys of life well-lived?

FLORAL ARRANGEMENTSFOR SUNDAY WORSHIP

We need your help, Epworth friends, as our Flower Fund is getting low! If you would like to honor or memorialize a loved one, you may contribute to the Epworth Floral Fund, and your commemoration will be listed in the Sunday Reminders. Please contact Nancy at 419.531.4236 or [email protected] if you are interested.

SERMONS & WORSHIP SERVICES

SERMON VIDEOS AVAILABLE ONLINEShare one of our Sunday sermons with an out-of-town friend or a seeker who is looking for a church home, or listen to a message that touched your heart one more time.

Go to www.epworth.com and click on the box that says “Sermons”. Watch the video or listen to the audio at home or on-the-go.

READERS, LEADERS, AND MUSICIANS NEEDED FOR VESPERS SERVICESEpworth leads 30 vespers services per year at three assisted living communities: Sunset House, Swan Creek Retirement Village, and Kingston Residence of Sylvania. We are pleased to bring the word of God, music, and prayers of gratitude and encouragement into these communities…and our team would love to have you join us.

What are your spiritual gifts and passions? The Word of God? Music? Mercy and Hospitality? Do you like spending time with members of “our greatest generation”? Would you like to learn how to lead worship and praise or participate by reading scripture? There is a place for you on our vespers team.

Vespers services are held:

• SWAN CREEK RETIREMENT VILLAGE - every other month on the third Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

• SUNSET HOUSE - monthly on the first Thursday at 4:00 p.m.

• KINGSTON RESIDENCE OF SYLVANIA - monthly on the third Thursday at 2:00 p.m.

If you’d like to learn more about serving on the vespers team, contact Beth Irwin, Director of Health Ministries, at [email protected] or 419.531.4236. All ages are welcome and encouraged!

HEALING AND WHOLENESS SERVICEEpworth member, Jennifer Church, will provide her personal testimony at the next Healing and Wholeness Service on Tuesday, September 9 at 7:00 p.m. in the Webb Chapel.

“Feeling My Way to Faith” is Jennifer’s story about the uncertain nature of the faith journey and the emotional challenges that influence the search for faith. It is the journey that ultimately led her back to a church home.

The Healing and Wholeness Service welcomes anyone who seeks intercessory healing prayer for themselves, for loved ones, and for the world. This meditative service offers scripture, music, prayer, communion, and anointing with oil for those who wish it.

And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick. (Matthew 14:14)

SET THE ALARMS! IT’S BACK TO SCHOOL TIME!

Epworth Health MinistriesYou’re buying new backpacks, paying school fees, and scrambling to find the right kind of pencils for math class. Must be back-to-school season!

After a summer of throwing schedules out the window, here are a few ideas for easing back into the school routine:

• Start now to ease the schedule closer to a school schedule. Try to inch bedtime back a few minutes each night so getting out of bed on the first day of school isn’t a chore.

• If you don’t already have a first-day-of-school tradition, start one! Let the kids decide what breakfast will be or pack an unusual lunch to celebrate new beginnings.

• Make sure clothes for the first day are laid out the night before and that the backpack is full and ready to go. That way there’s no scrambling to find the pencil pouch or spiral notebook for English class as the bus is arriving at the door.

When it comes to tackling homework, here are a few helpful ideas from the experts at Reading is Fundamental (rif.org):

• Have a regular place for your child to do homework. Use a desk or table in a quiet room. Be sure there’s plenty of light.

• Find a regular time for homework. You may want to make a rule: “No television until homework is finished.”

• During homework time, turn off the TV and radio.

• Help your children plan how they will use their time.

• Set a good example. While your child is doing homework, spend some time reading or working yourself. Then when homework is done, you can both talk about how much you’ve accomplished.

• Do the most difficult homework first. Save “easy” subjects for when your child is tired.

• Do the most important assignments first. If time runs short, the priorities will be finished. Do what’s required first.

• Finish the optional assignments later, even if they’re more fun.

Look over your child’s homework every day. Start at an early age and keep it up as long as you can. Praise good work. Your interest will encourage good work. Also, try having your child teach you the homework. The teacher always learns more than the student.

Expect there to be a few wrinkles as everyone transitions from summer to school. But don’t forget to continue making time for family fun and relaxation, too.

FACILITATOR NEEDED FOR LOW VISION/MACULAR DEGENERATION SUPPORT GROUPFor several years, Epworth has hosted a Low Vision/Macular Degeneration Support Group that is open to the community. The meetings take place on the second Monday of the month at 2:00 p.m.

If it is in your heart to serve the visually impaired and provide a social, supportive environment for their needs, contact Beth Irwin, Director of Health Ministries, at [email protected] or 419.531.4236 for further details.

The group is on hiatus until September, and Beth will be glad to get you oriented and assist with planning upcoming meetings.

FALL CLASSES & BIBLE STUDIES OFFERED

THE CONSCIOUS PARENTDo you find yourself asking, “How do I ‘fix’ my child’s behavior?” or “How can I make them understand…?” Many of us focus on positive or negative reinforcements. What if there was another approach? One that challenges the parent’s role as the powerful one, the dominate one, the one with the control. Dr. Shefali Tsabary offers such an approach in The Conscious Parent.

Join us Tuesdays, beginning October 7 for 4 weeks from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in Room 213 as we dig deeper. You will find our children should not merely be the receiver of our “psychological and spiritual legacy,” but the parent’s greatest teacher in our own development. Sound intriguing? It is! Led by Julie Paulenich, there will be no cost, and childcare will be available if requested in advance.

LISTEN: PRAYING IN A NOISY WORLDOn Thursdays, beginning October 2 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. for 6 weeks, we will discuss Bishop Rueben Job’s willingness to make a place for us where learning to listen through prayer is safe, inviting, encouraging, and supported. He assures us that learning to listen to God through prayer is a life-long experience that begins and ends with God. Psalms 33:6-9

This is a journey of prayer and study using a video and study guide, led by Tami Norris and Penny McCartney. The cost of guide is $14.99 or $9.99 for the Kindle download.

FUTURE CARE CLASSESFacing end of life for someone you love can be eased by knowing what to expect and by knowing what questions to ask. Medical, legal, and spiritual professionals will guide this interactive approach to learning, based on research in each field. Practical aspects will include guided completion of essential forms at the last session plus handouts for additional guidance.

Though each class will be a discreet unit, regular participants will gain a sense of preparedness for what is to come to all mortals - the loss of someone dear to us - perhaps even one’s self.

Classes will begin Wednesday, October 1 for 6 weeks. Watch for more details in the next Tower.

We all need a plan for our money. Financial Peace University (FPU) is that plan! It teaches God’s ways of handling money.

Through video teaching, class discussions, and interactive small group activities, FPU presents biblical, practical steps to get from where you are to where you’ve dreamed you could be.

This plan will show you how to get rid of debt, manage your money, spend and save wisely, and much more!

Beginning Tuesday, September 23 at 6:30 p.m. and continuing for 9 weeks.

Led by Pastor Keith, classes will last about 1 ½ hours, and the cost of a membership is $99. There is no charge to attend if you already have a membership kit. Childcare will be provided if requested in advance.

To register, contact Ruth Ann at [email protected] or 419.531.4236. Membership kits must be paid for by Tuesday, September 9.

Please note we have adopted some changes to our schedule and our book selection process. Starting in October 2014, our meeting date will consistently be the 4th Tuesday of the month. In October, that date is the 28th. You can now put a recurring event on your calendars so you will never miss a book club discussion!

We have also adopted a selection process. Instead of blindly picking a book, we will nominate 4 books to be put on the reading list but during the subsequent meeting we will take a vote to narrow it down to one. This will allow you a month to do research and read reviews before you vote for your pick. The nominees for the vote to be taken on August 19 are:

• Dark Places by Gillian Flynn

• The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriarty

• I’m Having So Much Fun Here Without You by Courtney Maum

• The Rise and Fall of Great Power by Tom Rachman

The discussion for the book chosen from these four will be October 28th. We will repeat the cycle going forward. Happy Reading!

ECEC opens on Tuesday, September 2 for the children in the Tuesday/Thursday morning session. The remaining four sessions begin on Wednesday, September 3. Classes meet for a shorter time during the first week. The staggered schedule will help ease the transition from home to preschool. Postcards will be sent late in August to all of the children scheduled to attend the preschool, listing the time they should come for the first two days and the names of their teachers.

There will be a new face at ECEC this year! Jennie Aubry has been hired to teach four days/week in the afternoon. She joins the experienced staff consisting of Pam Christensen, Kristina Keeler, Florine McCain (teacher/director), Suneeta Shah, Sam Shawaker and Betsy White.

IT’S A MEAT MARKET!On Confirmation Sunday, September 7, we will be collecting cans of meat to benefit The Friendly Center’s Healthy Client Food Pantry.

Please bring cans of chicken, salmon, tuna, or beef to stock their shelves with these protein rich foods. Please, no glass or expired foods.

The Friendly Center depends on their Service Guild and partner churches to stock their shelves, and meats are always in great need. Please bring one, ten, or as many as you can to offer healthful food choices to our friends in North Toledo!!!

CELEBRATION SUNDAYOn Confirmation Sunday, September 7, Chef Les Gant will be on hand to offer some delicious treats before and after the 8:30 AM service and after the 9:45 AM and 11:00 AM services.

Please plan to join us for worship!

EDUCATION

NURSERY & TODDLER• Childcare is available at 8:30, 9:45, and 11:00 in the nursery

• Sing-n-Worship at 8:30, 9:45, and 11:00 in Room 101 - We have moved across the hall to a larger room. Now we have plenty of space to learn and play and grow. Our toddlers learn from lessons geared to two year olds, which let them know how much we love them and how much God loves them.

PRE-SCHOOL• Play-N-Worship at 9:45 in Rooms 112 & 114 - Preschool children ages 3-5 (not yet in kindergarten) are invited to

join us. Each month the children will explore a new Bible Point through stories, songs, and play. The children will also memorize a Bible verse, learn an action prayer, and collect a Pennies for Jesus offering to buy children’s Bibles to send with our mission teams.

• For the summer, the preschool children will join W.O.W. (Worship Our Way) at 11:00 in Room 114 with the elementary children. Each week, the children will learn about God’s love through age-appropriate lessons packed with hands-on learning through praise, worship, and prayer.

ELEMENTARY• Children, Grades K-5 at 9:45 in Room 205, “The Oasis” - This summer we will caravan across the desert with

Moses and the Israelites with “WILDERNESS ESCAPE: Where God Guides and Provides”. Each week we will experience wilderness crafts, Bible stories, or games, as we learn Bible points throughout the summer. BEGINNING SEPTEMBER 14, we will BLAST OFF for fall as we launch kids on a mission of God’s love. We will welcome our new kindergarten kids to the Kingdom and begin a year of great times in the Kingdom.

• Sixth Grade S.L.A.M. at 9:45 - This summer, we will be meeting with Junior High in Room 003.

• Children, Grades K-3 at 11:00 WOW (Worship Our Way) in Room 205 - For the summer, this class will meet with the preschoolers in Room 114, directly following the Pastor’s Children’s Moment. Each week the children will learn about God’s love through age-appropriate lessons packed with hands-on learning through praise, worship, and prayer.

• Children, Grade 4 and up at 11:00 (“B’Tween Me & God”) in Room 205, “The Oasis” - We invite kids grade 4 and up to join us in the sanctuary and worship. Sit together with a group of friends or join your family. Ask an usher for the special green “B’Tween Me & God” bulletin inserts created just for you each week. These sheets are filled with questions and insights to help engage you in worship. Remember, there are no right or wrong answers, and you don’t even need to turn these in to anyone at the end of the day because worship is B’Tween you and God!

YOUTH• Youth Donuts and the Bible at 9:45 - Junior High in Room 003; Senior High in Room 215.

ADULT• Adult Bible Study at 9:45 in Room 214 - Join us as we discuss Adam Hamilton’s book (and DVD) Making Sense of the

Bible. You’ll be invited into a deeper appreciation of the Bible so that you might hear God speak through it and find its words to be life-changing and life-giving. We’ll consider questions such as, How and when was the Bible written? Who decided which books made it into the scriptures and why? How literally must we read it? And, Is the Bible ever wrong? Bring a friend.

• Friends in Faith at 9:45 in Room 213 - Come study with us as we study Not a Fan by Kyle Idleman. This is a DVD series of six 30-minute lessons of cinematic story telling. This one-of-a-kind small group study examines what it means to deny oneself and truly follow Jesus.

• Coffee and Conversation at 9:45 in Room 020 - Please join us as we discuss Faithlinks, which is how to apply our United Methodist beliefs to current faith issues and world events. Each week we will discuss a different topic.

• Bible Study at 9:45 in the Library (lower level by Central Avenue door) - We are studying Kyle Idleman’s riveting new book, Gods at War. Please join us as we learn how seekers, non-Christians, and life-long Christians alike will all be moved to grow their relationship with Christ.

• Sermon Notes at 11:00 in Room 214 - Through the summer, the class will share thoughts and discussions relating to the morning sermon. We use the scripture and pastoral message as the basis of the discussion and build in personal experiences in helping each other grow in our faith. We would like to invite those of you looking for spiritual enrichment and fellowship to stop in and give us a try. In the fall, we will start a study on the “Sermon on the Mount” (Beatitudes) and invite those interested to mark your calendars as a reminder to join us. Facilitator: Tony Faber
