of the golf course and the community, and I was attracted to the abundant amenities that make up NSTs wonderful array of events.”

Vesel noted that there are committees dedicated to sup-porting and maintaining specifi c areas of the club, as well as the dedicated golf staff and full-time employees dili-gently maintaining the course. This includes the Greens Committee, which looks after the condition of the course, and a Rangers Committee that oversees the speed of play on the course.

Towers Ladies Golf Association President Pat Tulchin said she feels that the club provides a great deal of ca-maraderie for the golf members. The TLGA has a 9-hole and 18-hole tournament schedule. “The fellowship that is prevalent among our resident members enhances the atmosphere here,” she said. “Residents want to build on continuing that experience. For example, we have new committee members on the TLGA this season, so it will be very exciting to look forward to further involvement.”

One such enhancement is the Ladies golf locker room vestibule area, where repainted bulletin boards are deco-rated to look like the greens of the course, announcing the season’s events and schedules. “It’s nice to have this area to emphasize our accomplishments as the season goes along,” Tulchin said. “It’s a place to emphasize and draw attention to our activities, and includes a photograph or two of those who have had a good day on the course.”

Golf membership is now comprised of over 300 peo-ple, including new committee members Libby Weston and Helen Bader, co-chairpersons of the 9-hole golfers. Both ladies have been friends for years, and enjoy working to-gether. “We are both Type A personalities, and feel our col-

North Shore Towers’ golf season is now in full swing, with enthusiastic members enjoying what is widely considered one of the most spectacular courses in the area. That is why the private, beautifully landscaped, 112-acre,

18-hole championship course is often referred to as “The Crown Jewel” of the co-op.

“Those involved in golf are very passionate and devote a lot of time to our events,” long-time Men’s Golf Asso-ciation President Ed Vesel said. “There are hundreds of people who come to NST only because of golf. We are cer-tainly one-of-a-kind in the City of New York; in fact, you have to go quite a ways to fi nd a complex like this, with 5,000 residents living on a golf course. We have marvel-ous amenities, but this golf course is what is known as the crown jewel of NST, because it lends such a unique aspect and luxury for those who live here.”

The Towers course opened March 1st and closes De-cember 31st, and the tournament schedules for the Men’s and Ladies’ Golf Associations are fi lled with a variety of activities, including the recent Women’s Tournament Opening Scramble and Luncheon, and the Men’s Tourna-ment Opening Day Scramble and Breakfast. Other popu-lar events include the President’s Cup Tournaments, Ryder Cup and Luncheon, and Club Championship Tournaments. The annual Babe Zaharias Golf Tournament for the Ameri-can Cancer Society, and tournaments celebrating Memo-rial Day, Labor Day, and July 4th are additional highlights.

Burt Sands, a member for 19 years and the Tournaments Chairman, said, “The reason I moved to NST was because

laborative efforts will enhance excellent additions to the existing golf activities, since we have such a wonderful working relationship together,” Weston said.

Loretta Katz, a 31-year resident member and all-around sporting enthusiast, is currently active in this year’s golf season, and is the 18-hole tournament chairperson for the TLGA. Golfers can choose to play in teams, or as indi-viduals, and tournaments last two weeks, one week, and some are for individuals, while others are for teams. “I get a consensus of golf events from the tournaments that were enjoyed from previous years, and each week we have a different format,” she said.

“I like the camaraderie of the community,” Katz contin-ued. “Unlike a golf club anywhere else, here at NST every-one comes in and chats with each other, spends time sit-ting and being personable and getting acquainted. You can see most everyone enjoys the atmosphere here, whereas in other clubs people spend their time golfi ng and then they go home and are not as conversant. But here we have an embracing group of individuals that like to be acquainted

By Gloria KeylounLeading the staff that works diligently to make the North Shore Towers Golf experi-

ence so appealing is Golf Professional Bob Guido. His passion for golf started at age 18, as a way of getting involved with the community and meeting new people.

“I liked the camaraderie of the sport, and the challenge, and just kept going from there,” he said.

His passion for golf has grown into an extensive career of providing his expertise to the NST golf community for 18 years. Guido, an East Atlantic Beach resident and a graduate of St. John’s University, held various positions in professional golf, including Assistant Pro at Garden City Country Club for 10 years, and Cherry Valley Country Club for two years.

Guido is the liaison to all the major outside Monday outings, approximately 40 during the season, and also organizes smaller weekday outings Tuesdays through Thursdays. Organizations such as Our Lady of Snows, Transitional Services, West-bury Seniors, and Glen Cove Water Company rent the facilities for the day. “It’s great revenue for the club, and it’s a great way to publicize the golf experience we have here to outside organizations,” he said. “These organizations and companies come to NST because they hear about our spectacular golf course and amenities via word of mouth,

and also from companies that know of our PGA standing and want to experience the course. Some residents who have been part of our outside outings have even returned to join our residential community here.”

Dr. Sandy Delson is the Director of Public Affairs and Development for Transitional Services for New York, Inc., located in Whitestone. This non-profit mental health and wellness agency, with locations covering the NYC bor-oughs, invites their supporters, friends and family to join in a fundraiser. This year their 4th Annual TSI Golf Out-ing took place at the NST Country Club on Monday, June 10th. The agency’s golf community is made up of mer-chants, supporters, and board committee members who bring their associates to participate in a day of golf at the Towers.

Delson explained how well Guido coordinates the agenda. “The association tees off about noon, and Bob of-fers a brunch on the 10th hole, and includes fun activities on the course like a putting contest,” he said. “North Shore Towers provides us with a wonderful 18-hole golf course, and to top it off we end the day with a buffet supper, and

finish up with a chance for people to meet and greet and have a wonderful day.”

Guido is also associated with various public schools and private golf organizations around the tri-state area. He lends his expertise to the junior golf community in a chance to play on the course, and they are always excited to come to experience golf at the co-op.

The summer schedule is filled with a host of junior golf events, where young golfers come and hone their skills in tournaments and competitions. Guido provides younger golfers a chance to experience competition and improve their proficiency in the sport.

High schools from around the area have an opportunity to hold various tournaments during the week in the sum-mer at NST on an annual basis. Some associations are the High School Golf Championship, and also a PGA Junior golf event, where junior golfers from metropolitan asso-ciations come to NST and participate in tournaments.

It’s a chance for Guido to give back to the community, offer his expertise and professional teaching guidance, and allow associations and organizations to experience golf at North Shore Towers.

Committee members also include Lynn Stanbock, a 10-year resident member who has a fl are for providing infor-mation about tournament winners, highlights the TLGA’s scheduled events, and is the TLGA’s publicity chairper-son. Kathy Paek, a resident member for three years, is a favorite among the ladies, who love her energy and spar-kling personality.

Golf Professional Bob Guido works with Assistant Pro Brian Gerowski, providing professional expertise and knowledge throughout the season. Guido, an 18-year em-ployee, said Mondays are reserved for outside organiza-tions that can rent the facility. “It is great way to adver-tise,” he said. “In fact, there have been people that have participated in our outings that actually became NST member residents.”

Gerowski collaborates closely with Guido for special events that incorporate the club’s participation and PGA member standing, accommodates members needs on the course, and supervises special events with outside golf or-ganizations that rent the facility. Guido and Gerowski also offer special instruction workshops throughout the sum-mer season, such as fundamental golf tips for young golf-ers, in a weekly junior’s summer clinic where they teach grip, posture and stance. They are also on hand to contrib-ute their knowledge to the Towers golfers on other aspects of the game, including etiquette, and scoring.

Members schedule their time on the course by contact-ing Starter Rudy Miller. Each member fi lls out a card with their line-up time and starting time, and the cards with the golfer names are posted in the lobbies, the pro shop, and online, as well as the Towers in-house TV station. “Rudy makes sure the golfers get out in an orderly fashion, and schedules the time for the men’s and women’s play,” Gui-do said.

Members can enjoy golfi ng Tuesdays through Sundays during the season on the meticulously landscaped course, due to the dedication and hard work of Greens Superin-tendent Eric O’Neill. The Grounds Committee’s talented landscape work provides the course with a beautiful back-drop for golfers to enjoy the scenery, and is highly valued among the players.

Sponsored members now account for 25 percent of golf and tennis membership, and there is a new incentive pro-gram of $250 towards club dues for members sponsoring new outside members, and $500 for golfers bringing in new golf members.

The golf club’s dues are still the lowest in Nassau County, and golf course refurbishment is ongoing, with two holes completed, and a nine-year plan in place to fi n-ish the entire course. Phases one and two of the renova-tion concluded on budget, and phase three is awaiting fi nal board approval.

Whether it is the sport, the active lifestyle, or the cama-raderie, North Shore Towers Golfers are passionate about golf, test ing their skills and challenging their abilities in a picturesque setting–conveniently located right outside their front doors. MADELYN STEIN PHOTOS
