IT’S CHRISTMAS TIME

There are several reasons people can feel a little depressed this time of year. The declining daylight hours, combined with the emotional and financial stresses that often accompany the holidays, can make some people feel depressed. But depression is not a part of normal aging, as many believe. There are things one can do to feel better this time of year.

1. Don’t fall victim to the common holiday excesses of food and alcohol, as these will only increase the symptoms.

2. Increase your bright light exposure with light therapy. 3. Daily exercise can increase energy levels, such as daily walks or

even chair exercises. 4. Keep your healthy routine, including getting enough sleep. 5. Prioritize your activities to what gives you the most satisfaction. 6. Feeling guilty depletes your energy; avoid it.

If you continue to feel depressed, seek medical help. Depression is highly treatable and by seeking assistance, you may find the means to enjoy the holiday season once again. Wishing You Joy, Phyllis, Parish Nurse

EVANGELISM or E is for Everyone’s Efforts

As we go through this transition with our Interim Pastor, it’s obvious that we sincerely care about each other and our visitors. Our Evangelism team has taken note of regular attendance, recent visitors and missing members. As usual, the staff and this team reach out to our congregation with emails, calls and conversations. Ongoing efforts to be even more inviting during these holiday times includes personal letters describing all the special services and activities going on at First Pres. and encouraging others to participate. We hope our members also participate and invite friends and family to attend with them. The team appreciates those who are concerned about people we miss at First Pres, and encourages anyone who would like to assist in these communication efforts to contact Cindy Wene (Evangelism Chair) [email protected] or Cathy Force (Lay Ministry ) [email protected]. Dennis Angel Tree Dennis School Parent Teacher Organization has the ambitious goal this year of finding gift donors for 80 students. In addition to gifts, cash donations and wrapping paper donations are also needed. Ornaments with the child’s name and info can be selected at the school office. They will need to be returned unwrapped with the child’s ornament tag by December 12th. For more information, call Dennis Lab School (422-3236) or email Brittany Childress ([email protected]). You may also pick up a flyer with the info in the church office or talk to Connie Requarth- 972-6304. Please consider making a child’s Christmas special!

Pastors, elders, teachers, and educators are encouraged to attend the Association of Presbyterian Church Educators (APCE) Annual Event in Baltimore on February 4 – 7, 2015. The theme this year, “Fear Not”, will address the paralyzing fear of church leadership to address the changes that are all around us. Workshop leaders will offer gifts of ideas and practical methodologies for churches of every size and shape. Learn how you can teach and preach an ancient story for a new generation of believers. For further event information, check out www.apcenet.org/2015-annual-event.ttml You may apply for the Pastoral Support and Enrichment grant available through the Presbytery. We have an application in the church office, but questions would be directed to the Presbytery, 423.1396.
