NIH Office of Biomedical Data Science Mission Statement
To use data science to foster an open digital ecosystem that will accelerate efficient, cost-effective
biomedical research
to enhance health, lengthen life, and reduce illness and disability

How to foster an open digital ecosystem for biomedical research?
• Invest in data science research applied to biomedical research challenges
• Establish appropriate governance and policies
• Develop necessary infrastructure and tools
• Ensure there are people who can make it happen
The BD2K Program is Central to the Mission

Data Science at NIH
Activities Currently Outside of BD2K
• Homogenization of Common Data Elements (CDEs)
• Sustainability • Policy & process development• Reference data• International and interagency cooperation
How to foster an open digital ecosystem for biomedical research?
•Be FAIR: • Findable• Accessible• Interoperable• Reusable
Being FAIR Needs a High Level of Cooperation
• BioCADDIE is prototyping a data indexing system – the time to engage is now
• Helping to decide what content to index with emphasis on value to a broad community and found in the Commons
• Provide feedback on the emerging prototype
• Recognize that different indexing of methods and types of content is on-going
• An NIH Research Index Working Group led by Vivien Bonazzi is to help coordinate and encourage engagement
• Work with BioCADDIE to integrate other efforts to support a single meta index
