Some challenges in the cement industry

Cement Industry in Chile demandsmore than 300.000 tons of fossil

fuels and millions tons of virgin rawmaterials per year.

Each ton of cement produced, generates up to 1 ton of CO2.

Voluntary Country: Chile

� Oct 2008: Establishment of a Public-Private Working Group on Co-processing

� Nov 2008: The Government of Chile informs the Secretariat of the Basel Convention of its plan to develop draft technical guidelines on the co-processing of hazardous waste in cement kilns, based on the technical guidelines on incineration on land (D10).

� Dec 2008: The Secretariat replies welcoming the initiative and making suggestions on the process for this work.
