Designed by Daniel Burnham and John Root, The Rookery (1888) is one of Chicago’s greatest early commercial skyscrapers. The luminous and brilliantly articulated central light court was designed by Wright in 1905. Root’s original ornamental metalwork designs and Wright’s remodeling of goldleaf-incised Carrara marble result in a spectacular environment.

One of the great masterpieces of 20th-century architecture and interior design, the Robie House (1908-10) synthesizes all the major innovations of Wright’s design philosophy. It is the definitive expression of his Prairie style and a precursor of modernism. A historic restoration is underway at the Robie House.

Wright built this richly conceived yet intimately scaled residence in 1915 for the president of Chicago’s Bach Brick Co. While adopting the vocabulary of Wright’s Prairie houses, the Bach House also looks toward the architect’s future stylistic directions in its crisp geometry and efficient scale.
