Email: [email protected] 11.30 am till late 7 Days 80 Todd St, Alice Springs (08) 8952 2873 Tourists claim farm pay rip-off Corey Sinclair A NUMBER of tourist workers have complained after not being paid by their former employer. According to the tourists, Joe Zappia, who was run- ning Territory Grapes, a grape farm in Ti Tree, asked them to fill out tax declar- ation forms, but they alleg- edly never received payslips and only received a fraction of their pay with some re- ceiving none. Mr Zappia is no longer connected in any way with any of the grape farms in the area. A number of Mr Zappia’s workers have made contact with the Centralian Advo- cate over the past few months, expressing their anger at not being paid. French couple Marco Fiemozzi and Aurelie Deloire forwarded us their email correspondence with Mr Zappia, in which he ad- mits owing them payment for 16.5 hours work each. ‘‘Our next pay run is Wed- nesday September 26th,’’ the email read. However the payment was never made. Tourists Corinna and Markus Friese said they and four other backpackers had worked for Mr Zappia from December 2012 to January 2013. ‘‘Each of us has just received a small amount ($400) of his payment and every one of us is still wait- ing for another $2000,’’ they said. ‘‘One of us even re- ceived no money at all. We all signed a contract and filled out the tax-file forms and wrote down our work- ing hours. Sadly we got no payslip.’’ The Frieses contacted the fair work ombudsman in Adelaide, who told them that Mr Zappia had left the country and cannot be con- tacted. ‘‘It looks like they abandoned the case because they cannot contact him,’’ Ms Friese said. Sylvain Georges had a similar story of being paid while she was there, but when it came time to leave — he didn’t pay her what was owed. ‘‘(I did) two weeks of work for nothing,’’ she said. Mr Zappia could not be tracked down for comment. Four stabbed in camp FOUR victims were taken to hospital after a multiple stabbing at Warlpiri Camp on Wed- nesday night. Watch Commander Peter Dash said police found three victims with cuts to the head and one with a stab wound. A female patient was reportedly injured by a family member. She re- ceived head injuries. Police said the victims have already been re- leased from hospital.
