Kelurahan Leuwigajah; District of Cimahi Selatan; The City of
Cimahi.General Information of Cireundeu Hamlet
• Administratively in RW 10; Kelurahan Leuwigajah• Located 780 meters above sea level• Lies in 64 hectares area• 200 head of household; 70 of them are Warga Adat
(traditional belief)

Warga AdatIt’s safe to say that 100% of
Cireundeu inhabitants are Sundanese people. The term
‘Warga Adat’ is for Sundanese people in Cireundeu who still hold
the traditional belief of Sunda Wiwitan.

Traditions in Cireundeu
1Sunda Wiwitan belief. A traditional
Sundanese belief inherited from the ancestors. They still celebrate Sura
Saka (Sundanese New Year).

Traditional musical art such as Angklung Buncis, Degung, and
Gamelan.

Traditional performance such as Wayang Golek (wooden puppet) and
some traditional dances.
Traditional culinary culture in consuming cassava for their main
meal and for other delicacy creations.
Some of the traditions that are still in practice in Cireundeu are as follows:

The traditional leaders was inspired by their ancestors to develop food security and not having rice as their main food. They started to look for alternative foods other than rice, such as sorghum, hanjeli, and corn.

Traditional Culinary CultureThe main attraction that draws visitors to come and visit
Cireundeu Hamlet is their unique traditional culinary culture in consuming cassava as their main food.
1Finally the indigenous people of Cireundeu decided to consume cassava as their main food. Because they find cassava as easy to plant and grow.
START TO CONSUME CASSAVA AS THEIR MAIN FOOD
2The indigenous people of Cireundeu feel grateful as they follow their ancestors to achieve food security.

They started to develop tasty food made of cassava, such as egg-roll, brownies, and dendeng (jerked cassava peel).
THE CREATION OF LOCAL DISHES 4
By the time of a landslide in Leuwigajah (near Cireundeu) in 2005, Cireundeu got people’s attention. These traditional activities attract the tourists arrival Cireundeu.

Looking into the development of the village, most of the people in Cireundeu has adapted the modern
way of life.
Thus, there have been some concerns from scholars and academician about the possibility of the
extinction of the tradition.

In spite of that concern, we can still see the indigenous people of Cireundeu still practicing their
belief and tradition strongly.
In regards to the development of tourism activity in the village, this research intends to reveal whether
this tradition is still preserved due to tourism activities…

Philosophy of Indigenous People
There are several philosophy of indigenous people of Cireundeu, which are:
Teu nanaon teu boga huma oge asal boga pare. Teu nanaon teu boga pare oge asal
boga beas. Teu nanaon teu boga beas oge asal bisa ngejo. Teu nanaon teu bisa ngejo oge asal bisa nyatu. Teu nanaon teu bisa nyatu ge asal
bisa hirup

SECOND THIRDIn addition, every
Saturday, indigenous people also commonly
held Surasa. It is an assembly for sharing
their experience. Usually, the Surasa
was held in the afternoon.

The Growth of TourismThere are plenty things that makes this tradition becomes
interesting, not only because of the ways in processing cassava into ‘rice’, but also the tradition to preserve its own
cassava plantation as the manifestation of food security.
Involvement of indigenous people in tourism activities.The indigenous people are involved to be the committee and the organisers to prepare the artistic performances in every visitation activities. They also help the committee as a guide.

Concerns Toward Tourism
There are some concerns toward tourism from the people of Cireundeu:
The people of Cireundeu want to avoid the
preservation of the cultural heritage only
for the sake of the visitors (money).
FIRST SECONDThe presence of the visitors makes the indigenous people have started to be cautious in terms of cassava
availability. Since plenty of the visitors want to taste the rice
cassava.

Positive Responses
There are some positive responses toward tourism as follows:
There’s no sign of cultural impact brought by the
outsider to the people of Cireunde. On the contrary, the visitors
learn from the indigenous people about the value of
Sundanese.
FIRSTThe visitors indeed
bring some motivation to the local people to
become more passionate in
preserving the cultural value inherited from
their ancestors.
SECOND THIRDThe younger
generation seems to have this urge to keep on believing in their parent’s faith and
continue the value of their parent’s culinary
culture.

Conclusions
The conclusions of this research are:With or without tourism in Cireundeu, ‘warga adat’ will still be practicing the traditions that they inherit; and will convey the traditional values to the families and their children without worrying about the extinction of the tradition.
However, they also recognise that tourism has been present in their village and become the energy that strengthens their passion in preserving the tradition of cassava food in Cireundeu Village.
On the other hand, there are some concerns about the younger generations who would preserve the traditional culinary culture only for the sake of ‘tourism’.
