WelcomeWelcome once again to our guide for all exhibitions and events happening at Touchstones Rochdale, and in the wider Borough over the next 6 months.

Our Art Gallery programme continues to develop and grow, with a particular focus on women artists, both historically within

the Borough, but also with a contemporary take on some of the region’s most exciting and innovative artists.

Manchester based Hannah Leighton-Boyce has been spending the past few months in our Arts and Heritage Resource Centre, taking inspiration from the museum objects there to develop a sound installation based on the collection of historic hand-tools.

To complement Hannah’s exhibition, the display in Gallery Two will present works from within the Borough’s collection by female artists; something we’re particularly proud to be able to do as part of Rochdale’s own collection.

In July, we will be continuing this theme in the ‘Tall Tales’ exhibition which showcases storytelling techniques from 17 women artists, presented in partnership with Rochdale Central Library.

Meanwhile our Events and Activities programme is expanding rapidly. As well as our much loved regular events, we are repeating our programme of Adult Craft sessions in response to the exhibitions. ‘Tall Tales’ will also see a variety of events from the artists and curators involved to engage people further in some of the fascinating themes raised by the exhibition.

However, our largest expansion comes in our programme for Children & Families. During the Summer Holidays, the programme is packed with events and workshops for children and young people including music, drama and craft sessions in Touchstones Rochdale, but also within the magnificent setting of Hare Hill House in Littleborough, with 6 days of events kindly supported by the Pennines Township.

We are continuing to develop our theatre offer following the success of ‘Around the World in 80 Days’ and ‘Tadpoles’ through a very special series of performances for 0-4 years during the Big Games activities. ‘The Adventures of Pom’ is a puppet and light theatre show specifically created to entertain and enthral babies and younger children; we’re very excited to work with artist and performer Ruthie Boycott-Garnett to bring this performance to Rochdale.

Along with all of this, there are several other great exhibitions and many more events coming up at Touchstones Rochdale and beyond; including our popular ‘People’s Art’ exhibition which will be returning in September.

We look forward to seeing you over the coming months!

Hannah Leighton-Boyce: Instruments of Industry 25 March - 11 June Gallery Three As a recipient of a New Opportunities Award, artist Hannah Leighton-Boyce has developed a sound based work in response to the Museums’ collection of historic hand-tools. ‘Instruments of Industry’ explores the resonance of these ‘disembodied’ tools within their elevation to museum objects.

The New Opportunities Award was developed in 2014 by New Expressions and Contemporary Visual Arts Network, working in partnership with Visual Arts South West. It aims to create innovative partnerships for organisations in the heritage sector as well as new ways of working for artists.

Jarred: Ceramics from the CollectionUntil Saturday 1 October Heritage GalleryOur homes are filled with ceramics. From teapots to tiles, baking bowls to bricks, prized ornaments to studio pieces, this exhibition celebrates their diversity. Jarred looks at how ceramics help us in our everyday lives, telling their story from 4000BC to the present day.

Discover how ceramics have been used in social and religious rituals and to commemorate events, places or people.

Highlights include an ancient Greek vase attributed to the Swing Painter as well as new acquisitions by contemporary ceramicists Paul Scott and Ikuko Iwamoto. Younger visitors can follow the White Rabbit and join Alice at the Mad Hatter’s tea party as well as laugh out loud at the tale of the tipper toilet and the naughty school boy.

It includes work by Henrietta Ward, Dorothea Sharp, Laura Knight, Stella Magarshack, Gillian Ayres, Lubaina Himid, Maud Sulter, Cornelia Parker, Junko Mori and Hayley Tompkins.
