Interview About Submarines with Wtr(SM) Aaron Goodwin

and Cdr Tom Herman OBE by Georgina Loring

What is it like being inside a submarine? Working in a submarine is very interesting. There are many different systems that are integrated in to the highly complex platforms with a very little amount of space. You have to turn sideways just to fit two people down the passageway. With me being about 6 foot tall (Aaron) this does not leave much space for my head, which I have banged and cut many times on different pipes. When the submarine is at sea we will work a two watch system known as 1st and 2nd watch, we will either work 1-7 or 7-1 twice a day. If I was in 2nd watch I would work from 0100 until 0700 I would then eat my breakfast and go to bed. Then at 1230 I will be woken up ready to eat my lunch and go on watch for me being a Logistics Writer Submariner this would mean I do hourly checks of the submarine. This will comprise checking for any ingress of water into the submarine, but my primary role on board is to pilot the submarine. My position is known as the helmsman or planesman. After this I would have my lunch and go back to bed and I will continue this routine until the submarine is back alongside the jetty.

How big is a submarine? Not big enough lets say 100m long and displacing about 5000 tonnes. When you look at a photo of a submarine you only see 10% of it as the remainder is below the waterline.

    Continued from page 1

How many submarines have you been in? The only submarines that I (Aaron) have been on are two Astute Class submarines. The names of these are Astute and Ambush. Tom has been in lots of submarines and has commanded two of them.

Have you ever worked the hydroplanes? What do they do? Yes. Its like flying a plane in clouds-you have to rely on the instruments. At speed the boat banks are just like a plane when turning. Routinely, you can get angles of 20 degrees up and down.

There are 4 ways to control the plane surfaces

    A. using the auto pilot B. Manually control of the submarine (Black stick as below) C. Using the IPB (illuminate push buttons) panel. Located just below the far left hand screen. D. Using the local control panels located at the front of the submarine and at the back of the submarine.

How fast do submarines go? I (Tom) cannot tell you as its a secret but they go pretty quickly indeed!

Was your submarine yellow? Unfortunately, these submarines are not yellow as they would not enable us to sneak about without being detected, so they are primarily black except for the masts, which are green in colour. Some small submarines, called ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles), are yellow; an ROV is looking for the missing Malaysian airliner.

How do you know where youre going? There are three ways of locating where we are and where we are going. One is the old fashioned way of using charts to locate where we are and the second is using a form of GPS (Global Positioning System). The other system that is used on board the submarine is radar which gives us the ability to see what is around us and how close we are to land if we are in proximity to it. Should we be on the surface, we can use the optronics masts to look around as well.

Do you sleep in them? The only time that we will sleep in a submarine is when we are on duty or at sea. The sleeping conditions are not the best and most people would find it hard to even roll over in the bunk without hitting your shoulders on the bunk above you (see picture).

Aaron, what job do you do? My job onboard the submarine is Logistics Writer Submariner (Logs Wtr SM) to deal with all pay queries for the 160 or so people attached to the submarine and to send and log mail as it comes in and out of the office. I also make sure that when the submarine moves around the world, all the move and track is correct so that every person on the submarine is accounted for should something happen whilst the boat is away on operations.

What do you think about life in a submarine then? I think it would be hard work and very cramped. For the first time ever women are now being trained to serve in Royal Navy submarines, but I dont think Id like to (Georgina)!

Tabitha Tells Tales Under The Sea

by Tabitha Huby One fine summers day, the queen decided she wanted to go on holiday. To Italy, she announced, on a ship. So the holiday planners got to work and by the end of the day had found the perfect holiday for the queen. The very next day the queen set off on her Italian holiday. When she was about half way, she decided to look at the beautiful, blue sea. She leaned over the side of the ship and saw how clear the Mediterranean was compared with the British channel. The queen slipped her arm down the side of the ship to feel the nice, warm water. But when she was admiring the water, her hand got so wet that her best ring fell off plop into the world of wetness, swaying below her. The search was on. It was on the front cover of all the newspapers. Divers from all over the world were asked to look for this ring. Days passed, no-one found it. Weeks passed, no-one found it. But when a month passed everyone gave up. Five years later... The queen announced she was going to Italy again, but this time on a plane, so she wouldnt lose anything. She was invited to a banquet with the Italian Prime Minister. When the queen got to the banquet, she was told they were having oysters, her favourite. When they were sitting at the table , they got served their meal and inside the Queens oyster she found her long lost ring!

    Scuba Diving by Archie West

Scuba diving is a form or underwater diving in

which a diver uses a 'Self Contained Underwater

Breathing Apparatus' to breathe under water.

Some divers use an underwater camera so they

can take photographs of beautiful fish, the sea bed

and maybe the odd ship wreck.

Scuba divers carry their own air supply in the form

of a tank on their back, this gives the diver freedom

to swim where they like and up to great depths.

When diving you should wear a mask or goggles, a

wet suit to keep you warm, flippers on your feet to

help you swim and also a weight belt.

Musical Moments by Annabel Sheppard Welcome to musical moments! In this issue I'm doing something to do with a kingdom... can you guess what it is?!

The Little Mermaid songs In this article I'm doing songs from The Little Mermaid, note that it's quite musical. The film was released in 1989, and said to be in the 'Disney Renaissance' .

    Part of your world

'Part of your world' was written by Alan Menken, and sung by Jodi Benson. This is one of my favourite songs,as it is very popular. The song is about Ariel wishing to become a human whilst looking at her things in her cavern. She also expresses that she wants to get away from her dads orders.

Under the Sea 'Under the Sea' is written by Howard Ashman, and sung by Samuel Wright. The song won an award for Best Original Song in 1989. The song is about Sebastian informing Ariel about the human life, and tells her to stay under the sea. This is also another one of my favourite songs, because of all the instruments joining in.

Kiss the Girl 'Kiss the Girl' is again written by Howard Ashmanand also sung be Samuel Wright. The song is about Sebastian persuading Eric to 'kiss the girl' to make Ariel into a permanent human. My favourite part of the song is right at the end, eventhough Eric doesn't kiss her. This is another one of my favourite songs. These are my three favourites - what are yours?!

    Make Your Own Fish Fingers

by Amy Horler Take 450g of fish - you can use cod, haddock, plaice or hake. Cut the fish into finger-sized pieces. Make sure they are about the same length and weight. Then get 50g of plain flour and coat each piece in the flour, dip into a beaten egg and then cover in crushed cornflakes. Fry each piece in vegetable oil until golden and cooked.

You can serve them with chips for a yummy tea.

    ATLANTIS by Adassa Walker

Atlantis is a mythical TV series broadcast by the BBC. The main character, Jason, was on a submarine, when it started to sink into the depths of the dark ocean bed. Next thing he knows, he is in an ancient Greek city where he meets his trusty friend, Pythagoras. He sets off to find out about his father. On his way, he meets mythical creatures which he has to defeat. I thought it was thrilling and one to watch again. It often finishes on a cliff-hanger, which leaves you desperate to watch the series. Every episode is different from the other, so you dont get bored of the same thing. I would give it 4/5 submarines.

    SHARKS by Ben Jacobi

Sharks have been living in the ocean for more than 400 million years. Most sharks are hunters and chase their prey, such as fish, squid and crab. But not all sharks are carnivores; some eat plankton like the Whale Shark. Today Ill tell you about the Hammerhead shark. Hammerhead sharks are easy to spot. They live in warm deep waters. The Hammerhead is one of the strangest looking sharks. He has a flat rectangular head, which looks like a hammer. The eyes can be 1 metre apart, allowing the shark to view a large area. They can grow up to 6 meters long and live for 20 30 years. The hammerhead favourite food is stingray! It feeds after sunset and hunts along the sea floor.

Weird but True Facts by Isabelle Preston

The largest underwater wedding was done by 303 divers who went to the marriage ceremony between Ewe Staronska and Pawel Burkowski (both Poland). It lasted 18 minutes, in August 27 2011. Richard Presley (USA) spent 69 days 19 minutes in a model underwater at a lagoon in Key Largo, Florida USA from 6th May to 14th July 1992. The fastest time to escape from a pair of handcuffs while underwater was 3.145 seconds, achieved by Thomas Blacke (USA) at the Ambassador Inn swimming pool on 25 October 2011. The largest underwater painting measured 0.8 metres squared and was created by Alexander Belozor (Ukraine) om 18th December 2010. The longest underwater clean-up lasted 168 hours and 39 minutes and was achieved by Astro (Malaysia) in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah on 13th April 2013. The most people playing draughts underwater is 88 at an event organised by Normunds Pakulis (Latvia) in Riga, on 21st May 2011.

    APP OF THE WEEK

Splashy Fish is a game where you have to control a little fish through some pipes. It is a very simple, but addictive game. The controls are easy, you just have to tap the screen to make the fish swim and thats about it! Whilst the fish is swimming, there will be some treasures popping up on the sea bed. Youll try and get as far as possible to get your high score, and the higher your score the more prizes you get to accessorize your fish. Compete against your friends to become champion of the sea! This is a great and simple game, but can get boring once youve played it a few times.

The Worlds Ugliest Fish by Archie Symonds

The worlds ugliest fish ever is called the Blobfish. The Blobfish is a deep sea fish of the family Psychrolutidae. It lives in the deep waters of the edge of Australia and Tasmania, as well as the sea of New Zealand. The fish has no muscle but gelatinous jelly. Blobfish are often caught as an accident in bottom of fishing nets. Scientists now fear the Blobfish could become an endangered species because of deep-ocean fishing! Due to its no muscle body, the blobfish's shape is very different when it is out of water.

    The Great Barrier Reef

    By Poppy Carter

Where is the reef? The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest Coral reef system made up of over 2,900

individual reefs and 900 islands stretching for over 2,300 kilometres (1,400 miles) over an area of approximately 344,400 square kilometres (133,000 sq miles). The reef is located in

the Coral Sea off the coast of Queensland, Australia. What is the reef?

Coral reefs are colonies of tiny animals found in sea waters that contain few nutrients. Most coral reefs are built from stony corals, which in turn consist of polyps that cluster in groups. The polyps belong to a group of animals known as Cnidaria, which also includes sea anemones and jellyfish.

Unlike sea anemones, coral polyps secrete hard carbonate exoskeletons which support and protect their bodies. Reefs grow best in warm, shallow, clear, sunny and agitated waters.

    Interesting facts.

There are over 1,500 species of fish.

There are over 900 islands in the reef

Its greatest threat is from climate change.

Why cant humans drink the sea?

    by Talia Curtis

Seawater contains salt, so when humans drink seawater their cells are taking in water and salt.

While humans can safely ingest small amounts of salt, the salt content in seawater is much higher than what can be processed by the

human body. Additionally, when we consume salt as part of our daily diets, we also drink

liquids, which help to dilute the salt and keep it at a healthy level. Living cells do depend on sodium chloride (salt) to maintain the bodys chemical balances and reactions; however, too much sodium can be deadly.

Human kidneys can only make urine that is less

salty than salt water. Therefore, to get rid of all the excess salt taken in by drinking seawater, you have to urinate more water than you drank.

One of the instruments scientists can use to measure how salty the sea is is a CTD

    rosette.

There is a rhyme that people say Water, water everywhere but not a drop to drink . It is a bit frustrating that there is so much water on the Earths surface and still people in some countries are suffering from droughts, malnutrition and poor health due to a lack of clean, fresh water.

    Aquariums By Iona Campbell

Aquariums are big buildings that contain all types of fish so people can visit them. The largest Aquarium is in Plymouth. It has been open since 1998. The first Aquarium was at Prince Alberts Great Exhibition in 1851. You can see the biggest fish or the smallest fish in one single aquarium! Some tanks are really colourful because of all the tropical fish, though other tanks might have stingrays, eels and even sharks ! Sometimes you are even allowed to stroke sting rays. They feel all slippery and silky. You might think Aquariums are like a SEA ZOO.

ATLANTIS MYTH OR REALITY? by Helena Brain

No one really knows for sure if Atlantis is real or fake, but I looked in to it and here is what I found: Poseidon, (God of the sea) owned Atlantis (an island somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean). Soon Poseidon fell in love with a mortal lady called Cleito. He created a house at the top of a hill in Atlantis and surrounded it by rings of water and land to protect her. In time, Cleito gave birth to 5 sets of twin boys, Atlas was the eldest and became king of Atlantis though the other boys had their own share of land. People lived on Atlantis and they loved it because of the good harvests and the island provided all kinds of herbs, fruits and nuts. An abundance of animals, including elephants, roamed the island. The citizens lived wonderful happy lives, until greed and power began to take over them. When Zeus saw all the greed of the Atlanteans, he gathered the gods to think up a punishment. Soon in one big rush of water Atlantis was gone. The island of Atlantis, its people, and its memory were all swallowed by the sea. It seems to me a pretty true story, but no one has ever actually found the city of Atlantis, now resting under the sea.

    What do you think?
