A. Reading Comprehension (20 marks) Read the following passage carefully. The Pied Piper of Hamelin Hamelin is a town on the banks of River Weser in

North Germany. This town was full of rats. The rats ate all the food, bit

babies and animals and made a lot of noise. The people were tired of the rats

but they could not do anything. Even the cats were not able to kill the rats.

They went to the Mayor and ordered him to do something to kill the rats as

quickly as possible. (Paragraph 1)

One day, a strange fellow wearing bright red and yellow clothes came to

Hamelin town. He was called the Pied Piper. He went to the Mayor and asked

him, “What will you pay me if I kill every single rat?” The Mayor offered him

a large sum of money. (Paragraph 2)

Happily, the Pied Piper started playing his flute. Hearing the soft lovely

music, every rat came out from its hole and followed the Pied Piper to the

River Weser. All the rats drowned in the river. Now the

town was free of the rats and the people were very happy.

(Paragraph 3)

The Pied Piper returned to the Mayor for his money. The

Mayor did not want to pay him and told the Pied Piper,

“Playing a tune on your flute is not worth any money. Get out of Hamelin!”

(Paragraph 4)

another tune on his flute. Hearing his music, the children came out of their

houses. They started following the Pied Piper as he walked out of the gates
