INTRODUCTIONCELEBRATING LIFE – AND DEATH - IN THE DARKSo, winter solstice, celestial birth and anything else we could celebrate during the dark months is behind us, the fi rst lighting event of 2012 has been and gone and it’s almost time to decamp to The ARC Show.

There’s something particularly satisfying in reaching this point in the annual lighting calendar; it always makes me think of spring and - bizarrely, being less dependent on artifi cial light. ARC heralds the longer days that we all miss so much at this time of year – and is all the more popular for that.

This year’s event has a very different feel – for the fi rst time in the show’s history, it’s to have a curator - in the shape of Durham Marenghi. Renowned for his considerable theatrical lighting design talents, Marenghi has achieved worldwide fame with projects as diverse as lighting Roger Waters’ (ex-Pink Floyd) rendition of The Wall in Berlin; the Hong Kong handover ceremony; the London 2012 Olympic handover in Beijing and the New Year’s Eve lighting and fi reworks event at the London Eye, which he’s been producing since 2004.

Bearing in mind the incredible changes we’ve all witnessed with the advent of the LED, one of the must-attend events will be the session on spectral equalisation. Apparently, the innovation – an industry exclusive presented by Joe Bokelman of ETC - will completely change the way in which colour is used in lighting, so miss it at your peril.

In the UK, opinions on the LED are still divided, although I think it’s fair to say we’ve all accepted that energy effi cient lighting is a must, but interestingly, the US appears to be fi ghting the demise of the incandescent lamp. Did you know that across the Atlantic, 40-60W incandescent lamps aren’t due to be withdrawn until 2014? Congress refused to allow the US Energy Department to implement effi ciency standards until the end of September.

Currently all US manufacturers are required to make energy-effi cient lamps, even though the Energy Department won't be able to fi ne those who violate the law. Most manufacturers have already made the changeover, but according to Bloomberg, the element of uncertainty created by the temporary ban on enforcement could prompt some to continue making 100-watt incandescents and allow upstart companies to sell ineffi cient versions without fear of Government reprisals. That, in turn, could put manufacturers making energy-effi cient bulbs at a competitive disadvantage – particularly if the American public doesn’t immediately take the energy effi cient models to heart.

On a grim note, it had to happen before long, but the decision by local authorities around the UK to turn off street lamps at night to save money has resulted in the fi rst fatality. Early on Christmas Day 2011, soldier Edward Heal was hit by a car in his home town of Clevedon in Somerset. With the advances in technology, turning off lights isn’t the answer to either energy reduction or cost cutting. Using the technology that’s available right now, every authority could be making huge savings – in both cash and energy usage – without putting a single life at risk.

It really is time that the powers that be took their heads from their collective rear ends and started to utilise the latest advances.

FOCUS ON peOple

Q. how did you first become involved in the lighting industry?I studied electronics engineering at technical University i n Ostrava and specialised in lighting.

I was always fascinated by the possibilities of what you could achieve technically and creatively using light. After graduating, and doing a post grad source in basic economics and accountancy, I joined a small local lighting manufacturer in Moravia – that was in 1992. In 1994, Ladislav Petrek (one of the owners of that original company) and I formed a new sales and manufacturing operation, which became Robe in 1995.

Q. What sparked you passion for lighting? At university I became interested in the technology and the creative results of applying lighting to different situations and circumstances. A bit later on, as I became acquainted with the entertainment industry, I found it an exciting, fast-paced environment, with lots of potential for innovation. Ideas were always welcomed and there was openness to experimenting and trying new avenues.

Q. Can you tell us a little about the history of Robe? Between 1994 and 2002 Robe became a major moving light OEM manufacturer, working with brands like Futurelight, Coemar, Movitech, Saggiter and Starway.

In 2002, Robe launched as an own brand at the SIB Rimini Show, by which time it already had considerable experience and a reputation for producing very well engineered and high quality products.

Now, Robe is one of the three largest moving light manufacturers worldwide. It has a wide range of moving lights, digital lightsources and LED fixtures – and also a sister company, Anolis, which manufactures cutting-edge standard and custom LED ranges for architectural, industrial and commercial applications.

Q. What does your role at Robe entail? As CEO, I am actively involved in sales, marketing and product development. A big part of my job entails extensive traveling and communicating face-to-face with the end-users of our products, seeing and appreciating their work, keeping in touch with forthcoming market demands and spotting future trends.

Q. Since joining in 1994, how has the company progressed? We started from the ground-up to get where we are now, with a very large production facility on two massive sites in Valašské Meziříčí, 360 employees and a worldwide distribution network in 90 countries.

Q. Why do you think Robe has been so successful? It’s successful due to many, many things - a lot of them interlinked. The key ones are bringing the right products to the market at the right time, being innovative and moving with the flow of the industry, keeping aware of and up-to-date with technical developments in areas like LED and discharge light sources and optics and staff commitments.

We have financial stability too; the company’s growth has been funded entirely out of ongoing and available cash flow.

Q. What has been the most exciting moment of your lighting career to date?Every day there are exciting moments. Just being in the industry is exciting!

Q&A

FOCUS ON peOple

If I had to pick one moment, it would be the year 2000, when we tripled the turnover of the company compared to the previous year – that was a landmark, and I realised that we were on to something.

Another landmark was 2011, when the ROBIN LEDWash 600 became the fastest selling product in the company’s history.

Q. how do live music and theatre performances differ? They are usually completely different styles of performance genre, needing a different approach, although some theatre shows can resemble rock ‘n’ roll gigs, and some music performances can be lit extremely theatrically. There are definitely some crossovers in the equipment used, while both production genres also have kit that is quite specific to their field.

Q. What equipment do you need to create a basic stage show and how do you go about it? This is purely down to the vision and imagination of the lighting designer, and the time it takes depends on the individual nature of the show.

Q. You have expressed your commitment to green issues. Why is this so important to you?The planet’s resources are fast running out and we all need to do what we can to save it for the future generations. However small a contribution that any individual can make, it’s really important and really worthwhile as together – collectively, we can make a difference.

Q. how do you raise awareness of the topic? We have specifically developed our latest ROBIN ranges of moving head fixtures to be smaller, lighter, brighter and more environmentally friendly. They take up less truck space and are easier to transport so less fuel is potentially used. They are lighter, so can be rigged on smaller trusses which also take up less room in the truck, and when

at the gig, the light weight means they need less rigging motors to be flown.

They also consume considerably less electricity than the previous versions – about 30 per cent less in fact, whilst outputting the same quality and quantity of light.

In September 2010, Robe launched its ‘Think of the Future – Consider Nature’ initiative to raise awareness of the need to produce genuinely more eco-friendly technology for the professional entertainment industry.

Q. Can you give us an insight into the future of lighting? What do the next five years have in store?More LED utilisation! Lighting products will continue to get smaller and more efficient. There will be increased awareness of how energy efficient lighting schemes can enhance buildings, urban environments and

Robe moving lights were the primary light fixtures used for the Israeli Opera’s ‘Aida’ at the 2011 Dead Sea & Jerusalem Opera Festival

entire cities. This will bring benefits from many different angles – aesthetic and practical.

Q. What do you personally hope to achieve with your career over the coming five years? To continue doing what we are doing at Robe, and doing it well. Being innovative, cutting edge, and at the forefront of this exciting industry.

Q. Finally, what does lighting mean to you? This year I will have been in the industry for 20 years so it’s my life and my passion.

People are becoming increasingly aware of how lighting can affect their lives, their work and their leisure time, so it’s a very exciting time right now.

There is huge potential and I am enjoying it more than ever.

s people travel more, tastes are becoming more sophisticated and expectations increase in

terms of what we expect from a hotel. In a competitive travel market, hotels are being forced to raise their game, resulting in an

overall increase in standards - and lighting plays an important part in achieving this.

Even three-star hotels, for example, now need to include a reading light in addition to the usual bedside lamp, and aesthetics have become more important as guests expect contemporary design in addition to function. Bathrooms generally have become more important, as we see also in private homes. They are no longer just a place to get clean, but more of a living space in which to enjoy spending time. Four- and fi ve-star hotels often include a rain shower and, space allowing, a separate walk-in shower in addition to the bath, so lighting must cater for these additional functions with the relevant IP ratings.

In order to achieve effi cient room layouts, hotel bathrooms usually do not have the benefi t of natural light, making the need to get the lighting right even more important. To meet the key requirements of general, task and ambient lighting, manufacturers need to provide a range of fl exible solutions that can work with various room layouts, including the popular practice of fi lling the entire space above the basins with mirror. It is important to have good task lighting around the mirror, ideally at either side of the face in order to provide fl attering illumination without shadows, so Astro for example has devised a system whereby a range of different lights can be affi xed directly to the mirror surface, exactly where required.

I can’t talk about lighting these days without mentioning LEDs. This technology is approaching like a tidal wave, due to the large savings in both energy and maintenance costs that LEDs can achieve. There are even some projects where only LED lighting is specifi ed, regardless of whether it is actually the best solution. Like computers, the cost is coming down all the time, while the performance is increasing. It is at times like this that the advice of a lighting specialist becomes even more necessary.

FOCUS ON PEOPLE

John Fearon, managing director of Astro Lighting turns the spotlight on hotels – and in particular their bathrooms. He questions whether the lighting is always fi t for purpose, particularly in the case of LED-only installations.

Energys launches funding scheme Energys Group is launching a lease arrangement for its energy-efficient lighting products. The scheme allows for instant carbon reduction and savings on electricity costs, but requires no capital investment and keeps the debt ‘off balance sheet’.

The scheme, which is subject to credit status, uses a standard commercial lease structure. Customers can take advantage of the energy-saving potential of the company’s retrofit lighting converter without paying upfront costs.

The lease will be structured so that from day one, the monthly payments will be covered by the financial savings that result from lower electricity bills. The client keeps all the remaining savings and also benefits from a greener site with a smaller carbon footprint and no further maintenance costs for the lighting system for the duration of the lease.

TRAIN IN THE EASTVoltage optimisation company, EMSc UK is continuing to invite businesses in London, East Anglia and the East Midlands to attend free continuing professional/personal development (CPD) seminars that will inform business professionals how they can reduce operating costs and improve overall efficiency through voltage optimisation.

The London seminar was held on January 25 at the Wellcome Collection Conference Centre. The East Anglia seminar will take place on February 21 at Norwich City Football Club; and the East Midlands seminar will be held at Nottingham Conferences on February 22.

Attendees will be able to identify low carbon initiatives, energy legislation and voltage optimisation solutions that can form part of their sustainability strategies, including presentations from industry experts and keynote speakers.

Speaking about the events, Nick Lee, marketing manager at EMS said: ‘Our free seminars aim to help businesses learn how they can benefit from voltage optimisation and the guaranteed cost savings the technology offers. They serve as a great platform for demonstrating the solution as a credible energy efficiency technology.’

Quadruple award successExciting news from Havells-Sylvania means that for an impressive fourth time in a year, the company brought home the trophy from an industry related awards event; at last November’s FX awards, the Concord Beacon Muse, Havells-Sylvania’s ground-breaking LED luminaire won Lighting Product of the Year.

The other celebrations are for Best Interior Luminaire at the Lighting Design Awards, the 2011 Commercial Product of the Year at the Lighting Association’s annual award scheme and Interior Luminaire of the Year at the Lux Awards 2011.Kuldeep Vali, SBU director, Concord commented: ‘This achievement is special for us as it is an award recognised not just by the lighting industry but by the whole interior design industry, including architects and designers. It truly shows that Beacon Muse is a leader in lighting solutions and demonstrates our innovation and technical expertise in exploiting LED technology to bring a solution with a new value proposition to our customers. We are thrilled with what we have achieved and we have firm plans in place to build on this success going into 2012.’

The Beacon Muse LED uses cutting-edge technology and ancient lens principles to create a fully adjustable spotlight. The new Muse’s adjustable optic system provides a wide flood 65˚ beam angle which can be adjusted to a 10˚ spot without the need for additional lenses or reflectors.

This fully adjustable spotlight provides all the benefits of LED technology, no UV / IR radiation, 50,000 hours life at 70% luminous flux, maintenance free applications and a considerable reduction in energy consumption over traditional light sources such as halogen.

Toshiba is replacing the 4,500 original energy-hungry Xenon fittings in the IM Pei’s iconic, 20-m high Louvre pyramid, the three smaller, surrounding pyramidions and the Colbert pavilion, with 3,200 new LED fittings. The environmentally conscious company ceased its production of general incandescent lamps back in March 2010.

It’s hoped the brand new lighting products, which will provide a soft glow every evening and night, will highlight the museum’s external beauty. The overall project includes high-beam lamps, which will illuminate the pyramid and the palace wall facade. Once the project is in place, Toshiba predicts the power consumption for exterior lighting will be reduced by 73 per cent, that’s 392,000 reduced to 105,000 watts of energy.

François Seguineau, executive vice president of Toshiba New Lighting System Division EU, says the Louvre project is one of the lighting division’s most iconic challenges so far: ‘Toshiba started to collaborate with the Louvre one

year ago, when no existing LED products could ensure a perfect retrofit for its outdoor lighting. The Toshiba New Lighting Systems Division and the EU Division successfully tackled this technological challenge to help one of the most famous world monuments switch to energy-saving LED lighting solutions and adapt for the future.’

Toshiba marked the initial lighting of the UNESCO World Heritage site on 6 December 2011, switching on 350 of the final 3,200 lights. The facades of the main Cour Napoléon courtyard will be illuminated in April 2012, while it’s expected the whole courtyard will be completed by 2013.

ENVIRONMENTAL STREET-CREDOn a local level, Norfolk based EnLight is streets ahead with its new centrally-controlled and Google maps-traceable street lighting system, which is already being trialled by local authorities after its December 2011 launch.

The ballast-regulated electrical circuit boasts an overall electrical energy

FOCUS ON ENERGY EFFICIENCY

If a street lamp is dimmed by 20 per cent, you won’t be able to detect the change, yet for every £5 you were spending on electricity, you will now only spend £4

efficiency of 95 per cent. Faults can be identified remotely and streetlights can be activated or dimmed to save energy from a central system.

Managing director of EnLight, David Aarons explains that this can potentially save precious pennies for councils who could dim the lights during low traffic hours around dawn, for example: ‘If a street lamp is dimmed by 20 per cent, you won’t be able to detect the change, yet for every £5 you were spending on electricity, you will now only spend £4. Our system gives them automatic control and enables them to save energy without turning off street lights.’

An efficient cluster control system is used to manage a group of lights in a village, area or street-by-street, and information on temperature, levels and mains power can be gathered from here to detect any faults swiftly. Therefore diagnostics can be fixed safely from an office rather than involving trips out to sites.

An analysis of each light’s performance is available online and via email. ‘We can tell whether the fault is with the lamppost or the mains supply. If the problem recurs at particular times, the engineer can be sent out then to ensure he is there when the fault occurs. The position of each lamp

PITCHING THE BUDGETIt’s not just large-scale projects that are embracing eco lighting and leading the way with LEDs. Smaller organisations can make savings and ensure lower carbon emissions with new technologies that are available to them.

Management at Coventry Golf Club recently cut their energy bill by 25 per cent and reduced CO2 emissions by five tonnes. Phil Weaver, course manager explains:

‘We are committed to trying to reduce our consumables, both on and off the course. As such, we decided to undertake a complete audit of our electricity consumption. We wanted to radically downsize our carbon footprint, and of course save on energy costs as bills continue to rise.’

The private members club has just picked up an English Gold Environment award for its sustainability project.

Rexel electrical suppliers made the initial recommendations and project managed the ensuing refit. They advised the club to fit energy saving lighting technology, including LEDs, presence detection and daylight harvesting to reduce its electricity bill.

Photovoltaic solar panels were also installed on the club roof to generate 3.6

kilowatts of free electricity every hour. As a result, the club will benefit from the Government’s payback scheme of 43.1 pence per kiloWatt hour, which has generated them £1,500 of income so far and is forecast to provide £56,000 in the next 25 years.

Says Brian Smithers, business development director at Rexel: ‘Coventry Golf Club is a perfect candidate for solar panelling because of all the natural light. The lack of shade on the roof provided an ideal environment for the photovoltaic solar panel array, not only reducing the club’s carbon footprint but also generating long-term revenue.’

North London. No area was left unlit when the company got to work on the external canopy, lobby, confectionary counter, IMAX screen and additional screens, toilets, coffee shop and bar at the venue.

Engineers installed its bespoke LIET LED products, which are designed to replace traditional down lighters, spotlights and fluorescent tubes.

‘LIET12, our metal halide replacement system, was installed to deliver in excess of 1000 lux throughout the space,’ explains a spokesperson from LIETCORP.

The main challenge was to supply adjustable lighting for the auditoria, which must be dimmable for movie viewing and bright enough for cleaning. ‘We were able to supply LIETs that are bright enough to allow cleaners to clean the cinema between films, but are also able to dim down, flicker-free, to just three lux during each screening. All this was achieved using controlsmart technology,’ says the spokesperson.

specialises in supplying international music tours and events and has a long history of involvement in the local music scene, having been involved with the lighting and design of the VNZMAs event for nearly two decades.

This year’s set, designed by Robin Rawstone, contained multiple video elements and LED screen surfaces, which were raised off the ground to allow for the entrance and exit o f artists, and rolling risers to be pushed on and offstage at the back for quick changeovers. Cooper, Rawstone and production manager, Peter Grumley worked closely to evolve a bespoke aesthetic for the fast-paced show, and to ensure that all the lighting, set and digital scenic elements worked in harmony.

The LEDWashes were specifically positioned to provide back and ‘black hole’ fillers beneath the LED screens for specific camera shots. The fixtures were configured in 37-channel mode, with all LEDs being individually addressed, allowing the creation of funky, kaleidoscopic patterns on the rings – one of the special features of Robe’s LEDWash series.

The LEDWashes are a relatively new edition to Spot-Light’s rental stock. The first batch was purchased in May, and that was followed up by more just prior to the event. Cooper had used LEDWashes only once before spec’ing them onto the NZMAs, which involved a completely different context –a charity gig in a hotel ballroom for front light.

However, this was enough for him to realise their potential and he jumped at the chance to use them for the awards. ‘I like trying out new and exciting technology, so this was the perfect chance,’ Cooper explained, emphasising that lights positioned in the ‘back-of-camera’ are absolutely crucial. He needed fixtures with real power, punch and impact to fulfil the role.

‘They were awesome,’ he continued. ‘Extremely bright and delivered exactly what

The lighting for the 2011 VNZMAs was controlled via three Avolites Pearls running Expert Titan software and the latest touch screen wings. The show was programmed and run by Cooper and Chris Browne.

NVC+44(0)121 457 6340 | www.nvcuk.com

NVC has launched a complete range of LED amenity products. These are an energy saving, low maintenance alternative to 28W 2D, ideal for use in stairwells

and corridors. The range stretches from decorative IP40 fi ttings to IP65 vandal resistant fi ttings. The entire range uses 16W LED to replace 28W LED, so substantial energy savings are

assured. It is available in standard and emergency versions. The LED amenity range comes complete with a specially designed diffuser which provides

excellent light transmission and a very even distribution, avoiding the glare that is common with cheaper LED products and the lamp-image that is common with 2D fi ttings.

For greater energy savings, sensors can also be used. Unlike traditional 28W fl uorescent lamps, LEDs are not adversely effected by frequent switching. This means that sensors can be installed to control LEDs with complete confi dence, and to maximise energy savings they can be set to a short time delay.

Perfect Convenience from the New Sylvania RefLED SA111!LED lamps are gaining in popularity due to their energy efficiency and long life. Sylvania has launched the new RefLED SA111 to replace the halogen SA111 lamp and meet the demands for LED replacement lamps for existing halogen products.

Ian Major, Product and Marketing Manager – UK Lamps, comments: “End users have woken up to the benefits of LED technology and are looking for equivalents to replace their existing lamps. The SA111 halogen is a hugely popular format and there is a real need for an LED version. Our new RefLED SA11 is the only lamp on the market which has the same attractive design as the halogen equivalent and we have managed to achieve this by placing the LED’s placed at the back of the antiglare shield to keep the aesthetics the way architects and designers love them.”

The RefLED SA111 has an aluminium patented spiralised reflector design that delivers uniform light distribution. The lamp is energy efficient and has a long life of 25,000 hours.  The length of the time the lamp can be relied upon to operate ensures that there is a short payback period for any investment. The energy saving potential in comparison with halogen equivalents makes the RefLED SA111 the perfect choice for all types of retrofit and new build project.

Ideal for retail display and the hospitality sector, the RefLED SA111 is particularly suited for use in supermarkets and convenience stores as the lamp does not emit UV or IR rays, so light-sensitive products, such as food, are protected. Also the lamp creates less heat than comparative products so air conditioning costs will be lower in the long run. In addition to this, to ensure it is in keeping with its halogen alternative, Havells-Sylvania has created the new lamp in a warm white light to make certain the same ambience is created from an LED light source.

glassguard lights up seasonFragment retention lamps manufacturer, GlassGuard has recently completed a re-lamping project at Thetford Town FC.

The project included the installation of BlackBand fragment retention lamps in the home and visiting team dressing rooms, for an improved safety profile where broken glass could risk player injury. The referee’s room, physiotherapy room and the kitchen have also received upgraded BlackBand lamps, while halogen spotlights were installed in the clubhouse bar, providing improved lighting as well as 30% energy savings.

‘Safety is absolutely key in a changing room environment,’ says marketing manager, Stewart Damonsing. ‘Lamps risk breakage at times of maintenance or if struck by accident, for instance by a stray ball. A broken lamp can spread glass particles over a wide area, posing a real danger to those using the facilities. Glass containment with BlackBand lamps is absolutely vital for improved health and safety for players, staff and officials.’

Three Jands Vista T2 consoles, each running next generation v2 software, were used to control lighting and media at White’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Dallas, Texas.

In the run up to Christmas a spectacular show, Celebrate The Light, was projected onto the front of the impressive façade of the church building up to six times each night, drawing crowds of up to 5,000.

Tim Georgeff, the church’s creative director, had been working towards producing a Christmas projection presentation on the building for some time. With the help of Steve Alford of Alford Media – who supplied three Barco 20K FLM projectors and a pair of Green Hippo Grasshopper media servers - as well as

local graphic designer David Koss, this became a reality for Christmas 2011.

The Vista controlled the Grasshopper media servers to create the detailed video presentation the team were after. Vista’s graphical interface made the process fast, accurate and smooth.

Throughout the festive season, White’s Chapel ran events including a major annual Christmas musical. This year’s production, Born Where the Shadows Lie, has lighting designed by Keith Allen from Alford Media.

Fixtures include VARI*LITE VL 3000s, Martin Professional MAC 550s and GLP Volkslicht LED washes , Chroma-Q Color Block DB4 LED battens, plus ETC Source Four profiles, PARs and fresnels.

Surprisingly, emergency lighting is only required to run for 90 minutes during a power cut.

However, following the number of natural disasters this year it has been highlighted to the emergency lighting industry that this may not be long enough. Although the OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) only requires 90 minutes, enough time for many evacuations to be completed, in some instances this may not be enough.

In some situations emergency lighting may be needed even if an evacuation is not. For example strong winds may bring power lines down, but an evacuation is not necessary. However, after 90 minutes, workers would be left in darkness.

In all places of work where there is the possibility of a power cut, it is neces-sary to invest in emergency lighting that will stay alight when it’s most needed.

Natural disasters lead to wake up call

Multiload shortlisted Multiload Technology has been shortlisted for the 2012 Lighting Design Awards. The company entered MoodMaker, a sophisticated scene setting lighting system, which is easy to install, user-friendly and highly reliable. It works without microprocessors and memory chips, which are susceptible to corruption, offering instead a fresh approach to lighting controls, which puts the user in total control of the installation.

Brian Cuthbertson, managing director of Multiload, said: ‘We are delighted MoodMaker has been shortlisted for the 2012 Lighting and Design Awards. This truly innovative product represents a real step forward in the design of lighting control systems.

FOCUS ON COmmerCial

As with many lighting applications, the sector is increasingly using LED luminaires, which are more expensive but more economical, efficient and longer lasting than their fluorescent counterparts.

Standard warranties are one year and emergency systems are either wired separately from the building’s main lighting system or have a battery back-up in event of a power failure.

Mains lighting can also be converted into an emergency system by adding a battery supply or attaching an LED to the mains that will be triggered in an emergency. Otherwise, systems are either a maintained function, which stays on all the time; or non-maintained, which comes on in the event of mains supply failure.

In many cases, functionality is not enough, and aesthetics are bringing to bear their influence in the industry. ‘Designers of buildings are raising awareness of user functionality and demanding greater details in lighting design,’ says Chew. ‘In recognition of this, we tailor projects to customers’ needs.’

Regular testing of emergency systems is increasingly automated. Addressable systems perform the necessary scheduled tests in accordance with BS5266, and each luminaire then ‘reports back’ to a central panel or computer with the test results. Any malfunctions are highlighted at the central point, giving the address of the faulty luminaire.

Relatively new to the industry is Digital Addressable Lighting Technology (DALI), which enables the use of a mixture of manufacturers’ emergency luminaries on

he recent proliferation of natural disasters in the UK has highlighted the crucial role emergency lighting plays – whether in the case of fi re or fl ood, or the bringing down of power lines. But it has also raised

a questionmark over the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Standard that emergency lighting is required to run for 90 minutes only.

Is that long enough? This is particularly worrying in the event of a power cut, where an evacuation of premises isn’t necessary, but where work would have to stop without light after 90 minutes.

However, the British Standards (BSI) and European Norm (EN) – a pan-European standard – require either one hour or three hours, depending on the application, and according to product marketing manager, emergency lighting, for Cooper Industries, James Beresford, the UK industry defaults to three hours to capture all eventualities.

This certainly applies to both Cooper Industries and Ringtail, and as design director for Ringtail, Jordan Chew points out: ‘This also provides the emergency services with a means of navigating the area effectively.’

each addressable system. ‘Using DALI, we can offer a full addressable emergency lighting system that can be incorporated in existing DALI networks and building management systems,’ explains Chew.

BSI recommends that all emergency lighting should have a function test once a month to check that each luminaire is working, plus a full rated duration test annually, after which it should be recharged. ‘These ensure that the lumen output is maintained to provide secure viewing distances in the event of an emergency,’ he says. ‘The longevity and security of the luminaire is dependent on the commitment and vigilance of the user.’

In addition: ‘The Fire Safety Order Directive of 2005 requires that emergency lighting be periodically tested for correct operation, and records kept,’ says Cooper Industries’ James Beresford. Any building owner or manager in breach of this and not maintaining compliance with current standards risks legal prosecution, with a fi nancial penalty or custodial sentence a possible outcome.

Safelincs is an international fi re safety retailer, which sells relevant products and provides a nationwide fi re safety service, including fi re extinguisher maintenance and fi re alarm panel installations. The company stocks Ringtail products and has installed them on its premises.

‘We have standard economy bulkhead fi re exit boxes in our building, although we have never had to put them to the test,’ says product manager, Stuart Baxter. ‘Ringtail is one of the few companies that offers three-year warranties and offers good alternative cost savings

in terms of self-test and LED functionality. Self-test LEDs are more expensive but you save money because they don’t have to be monitored independently, they are more energy-effi cient and they last longer.’

Safelincs supplied the emergency lighting system for Westfi eld Stratford City near the Olympic Park.

‘We supplied the units on DALI, which is quite new to the industry - it is still niche. Everything is on a central control panel, which makes testing and control easier. It is a self-checking system but you still have to carry out an annual system check, where you cut the power and wait for three hours, to make sure the emergency system stays on, and then turn the power back on.’

Even given every conceivable precaution, one of the worst crises is fi re and associated smoke, through which emergency lighting has to shine like a beacon. ‘Escape route signs are a mandatory requirement, to provide indication of the correct path to exit a building in the event of fi re, with stringent standards regarding their operation and application,’ reminds Beresford.

The Fire Safety Order Directive of 2005 requires that emergency lighting be periodically tested for correct operation, and records kept

newsspecialist lighting

Havells-Sylvania has boosted its CFL range with the introduction of the Mini-Lynx (ML) Classico, ML Spiro Superior and ML Home.

Announcing this initiative, Suzanne Cowley SBU CFLi lamps manager said:  ‘As consumers and businesses aim to save energy and costs, they look at different technologies to help them meet their needs. Lamps and lighting have a key role to play in this regard. Compact fluorescent lamps offer major cost-saving benefits

to consumers right now and they are available at extremely affordable prices We have extended and improved our CFL series to offer a very cost efficient, performance-led choice in lamps.’

As the phasing out of incandescent lamps progresses across Europe, alternatives are required. Unfortunately, over recent years, the market has been flooded with unregulated, poorly-designed and inefficient lamps which do not deliver on their packaging

promises. In order to redress the balance, Sylvania’s CFL range, which meets or exceeds all relevant regulations, can be trusted to offer consumers affordable, efficient and effective lamps in a wide variety of sizes, shapes, outputs and designs.

The new ML Classico 7W & 11W are exact size replacements for A55 & A60 incandescent GLS lamps. As today’s decorative fittings are getting smaller and more compact, the ML Classico’s

smaller sizes make it ideal for residential environments. The improved cover design of this lamp removes the unsightly plastic base of previous models, ensuring all-round illumination with no dark areas.

The ML Spiro Superior and ML Home address the widespread concerns of slow lamp start when it comes to using CFL’s at home with their instant start feature. ML Home is a price-fighting 8,000-hour lamp, which broadens Sylvania’s stick range.

A world first in recycling?Revend Recycling Ltd has announced the launch of an innovative reverse vending recycling machine for the collection and recycling of domestic lamps and batteries.

The patented reVend reverse vending recycling machine has been jointly designed and developed by Revend Recycling and Norwegian company, Repant ASA, The lamp recycling machine has an add-on unit, as an option, for the collection and recycling of domestic batteries which contain valuable and scarce natural mineral resources.

Increased demand for recycling lamps, and the international change over to CFL and LED domestic lamps as well as the recycling of domestic batteries is a key environment policy for all Governments, the EU Commission and the United Nations.

Recycling rates in the domestic lighting industry are in sharp focus internationally as significant waste tonnage amounts remain untreated and unprocessed. Used lamps frequently end up in landfill sites at considerable environmental and financial cost.

The new range of recycling machines should help to increase national recycling rates and assist companies and organisations to comply with their recycling targets and environmental recycling obligations.

The smallest pair in the Jands Vista lighting and media control range has won the award for Best Moving Light Console – Small Format, at the 2011 WFX expo in Dallas, Texas.

The portable and compact Vista M1 and Vista S1 shared the spotlight, together with the second generation of software for the range - Vista v2 - which was launched earlier in the year.

The Awards are an integral element of the high profile annual WFX show, and are designed to honour the most innovative products available. The winners are selected by a panel of industry experts.

The award was collected on behalf of Jands by VP of sales and marketing at North American distributor, AC Lighting Inc, Fred Mikeska. On accepting the award Mikeska commented: ‘The team at Jands is really in tune with the market,

they listen carefully to all of the input and feedback they receive from our extensive list of users.  The Vista range is a great example of a company listening closely to its user base, then delivering a product that meets their needs. Vista v2 gives users of all levels the tools to deliver great looking events quickly and easily without having to resort to hours of complicated programming’.

Vista v2 was designed from the ground up to allow all levels of user to get the most from whatever mix of technology they have available, whether dimmers, moving lights, LED or media.  It continues to make a big impact worldwide with recent tours and shows, including Third Day, Sara Bareilles, Adele, Pulp, The Year of the Forest WWF Fund, Vienne Jazz Festival and Finland’s European Capital of Culture opening ceremony in Turku.

When it comes to regeneration and development, bridge lighting projects are adding sparkle to both old landmarks and contemporary structures. Dawn Gay looks at how bridges are illuminating the urban landscape

An Olympic message: Tower BridgeCity of London, EDF Energy and General Electric have raised their collective game by backing an energy-efficient overhaul of Tower Bridge’s lighting system in time for the London 2012 Olympics and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee flotilla on the Thames in June.

The new, sustainable and low-carbon LED system powered by EDF is predicted to reduce energy consumption by 40 per cent. Plans to replace the original 25-year-old system were granted by Southwark Council in October 2011. Lord Mayor, Boris Johnson commented: ‘Tower Bridge is one of this city’s most stunning landmarks, recognised the world over and therefore deserving of a starring role in these year-long celebrations. I am thrilled to have brokered this deal – at no cost to the taxpayer - to bathe Tower Bridge in eco-friendly light to create a fresh perspective of this wonderful icon.’

deep blue alongside the iconic Grand Mosque once a month. A lighting system allows control of the flow of light along the spine. The underneath of the bridge is lined with integrated monochrome ‘cell’ lighting.

The lighting designers, whose ideas followed on from concepts by Dutch lighting designer, Hollands Licht, wanted to capture the region’s cultural soul and urban growth by illuminating this 842m long structure spanning the Maqta Channel between mainland UAE and Abu Dhabi.

A representative for the project says: ‘Conceived in an open setting, the bridge has the prospect of becoming a destination in itself and potential catalyst in the future urban growth of Abu Dhabi. As the sun sets, the fluid nature of the bridge is visualised by the lighting concept. Lively contrasts flow across the channel, dematerialising the bridge, creating an embracing landscape of colours for the users of the bridge, and a scenic feature for the distant viewers.’

The design was conceived with the cultural setting in mind: ‘A specially developed ‘language of light’ celebrates religious traditions, festivities and public events together with the people of the United Arab Emirates.’

French company, Citelum has been awarded the contract to design the lighting, which will be draped between the two neo-gothic towers and will morph through a set colour scheme to suit the occasion. The company has also designed impressive bridge lighting systems for Ho Chi Minh City’’s Thu Thiem and Phu My bridges. ‘Our lighting is designed to highlight the bridges’ three functions: a liaison between old and new neighbourhoods, an expression of new economic power and an embodiment of historical and environmental values,’ explains their spokesperson.

Urban regenerationThe tilting ‘blinking eye’ design of Gateshead Millennium Bridge iconic pedestrian and cycle way across the river Tyne, created by Wilkinson & Eyre Architects and structural engineer, Gifford & Partners, is more than a feat of engineering.

The award winning structure’s lighting completed by Speirs and Major in 2001, embraces the latest in LED technology and was key to the area’s facelift. Green and red LED lights alert cyclists and walkers when the bridge is to open and close and the walkways, cycleway and balustrades are lined with low three-watt voltage LEDs.

The arch of the bridge also changes between white and a series of colours. Says Speirs and Major: ‘We planned the lighting to reinforce the shape, structure and movement of the bridge, with all equipment fully integrated into the architectural form. The surface of the arch is cross lit with both white and changing coloured light, used for special events.’

Special design touches include ribbed lighting underneath the main deck, which projects ‘narrow beam sources’ reflecting off the river surface. The bridge’s foundations are also lit with blue lights to reveal the intricate hydraulic workings inside.

More recently, Speirs and Major put its name to the sweeping cold, white lit archway that looms over the Infinity Bridge footbridge spanning the River Tees as a part of the rejuvenation of the North Shore area. The arches over the 230m long walkway curve like a pebble skimming water. A hidden lighting system was used to reflect the ∞ infinity sign on the water.

Concealed low-energy, blue and white LED units under the handrails also alternate colours along the walkway. To avoid intrusive lighting, Speirs and Major positioned floodlights on outriggers to illuminate the bridge.

Building cultural bridges: sheikh Zayed Bridge, Abu dhabiInternational designer, Arup the company responsible for lighting the structural concept of the Sydney Opera House, completed its eight-year long project, lighting the Sheikh Zayed Bridge in Abu Dhabi to great acclaim. The undulating, dynamic lighting runs along the spine of the road bridge, built by architects Zaha Hadid, and glows

illuminating the river ClydeMany of the bridges spanning the River Clyde in Glasgow were built as early as the 1850’s, when the city fl ourished at the peak of the industrial revolution.

In the noughties, the Clyde Arc, linking the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre and the city’s media hub with its 96m bow-shaped arch, joined the collection of older ‘beam and arch’ and suspension designs. Halcrow Group engineered the four-lane traffi c bridge. They say: ‘Coloured architectural lighting is directed upwards to refl ect from the downward facing diamond sections, which increases the arch’s dramatic effect.’

Philips installed lighting based on designs by Glasgow City Council Land Services Department for the oldest surviving Clyde crossing, the Victoria Bridge (1854). Its foundations hark back to its 13th Century predecessor, Bishops Bridge.

The 120m granite and sandstone arched traffi c bridge is lit with contemporary LED sources, namely Philips’ long-life, high performance LEDline range. It was the fi rst bridge to be relit as part of Glasgow City Council’s Lighting Strategy, using light to promote the city’s

creativity and renewal. Glasgow City Council describes the overall effect: ‘White light on the piers and balustrade with contrasting blue light to the underside of the arches gives attractive refl ections in the river. With the exception of the piers, the bridge is lit entirely by linear LED fi ttings minimising maintenance and operational costs.’

Intense blue LED lights radiate from the underneath the bridge, refl ecting in the water below, while the railings glow with white LEDs. John Fagg, Glasgow City’s lighting designer describes: ‘The beauty and intensity of the colours far exceeds our initial ambitions. This is a powerful and positive form of expression, which connects the two halves of our city with each other. Our challenge was not only to create an object of beauty, but also to ensure that the installation required little maintenance.’

‘We planned the lighting to reinforce the shape, structure and movement of the bridge, with all equipment fully integrated into the architectural form’

he commission, for which Ashton also designed the large format projection system used to bring the work to life, was from Cadw - the Welsh

Assembly Government division responsible for preserving and promoting the history and heritage of Wales.

The original 2010 event was the first time that an entertainment spectacle of this genre had been commissioned for a Welsh historical monument, and it proved such a massive success that Cadw decided to repeat the experience for three evenings at the end of 2011.

Ashton’s 20-minute work depicted the history of the castle, and was accompanied by a special audio track produced by sound artist, Karen Monid.

‘Working at Caerphilly Castle again was a fantastic experience,’ enthused Ashton, who has produced detailed and very specific work for landmark buildings and site-specific locations worldwide. Caerphilly is the largest castle in Wales (second in size to Windsor and one of the largest fortresses in Europe), and dates to 1267.

The designs were projected onto two buildings in the Inner Ward of the Castle - the rear of the Gatehouse, and the Main Hall, sited at 90 degrees to one another. The images measured approximately 30m wide onto both surfaces and the three Christie HD18 projectors were

T positioned 50m away. These were supplied by QED to the Projection Studio.

A double stacked pair rigged at the top of a scaffolding platform covered the Gatehouse, with the third single machine positioned at the end of a long balcony on the building opposite the Main Hall.

All of the content - including some impressive PiP elements shaped and fitted millimetre-perfect to the architecture of the buildings - was loaded on to three OnlyView servers, programmed by Richard Porter and Karen Monid.

Ashton was engaged for the project by Marilyn Lewis, Director of Cadw. After receiving the original brief, he worked closely with Lewis and Cadw, a storyline was developed from which he chose specific elements that would look best with large video projections, whilst preserving the timeline of historical events.

A major creative challenge was designing a show without a voice-over accompaniment. Welsh Assembly Government projects need to be fully bilingual; however a show without spoken word effectively removes the need for simultaneous translation. The narrative therefore had to be very strong within the visual material with a minimal amount of text, allowing the atmospheric enhancement of the soundscape to ‘speak’.

Original artwork for the show was produced by Ashton and his team of Paul Chatfield and Steve Larkins, together with 3D

animations by Richard Porter. Cadw provided archive material and also commissioned illustrator, Mike Cooper of 2000AD and Judge Dredd fame to produce original works, which were drawn to the Projection Studio’s specification allowing them to be easily animated when the final show’s video content was edited and composited.

Monid’s sound track was a fusion of sound effects and music, much of it specially written by her for the piece. Other parts were sourced from record label, Naxos and Boosey & Hawkes, plus original recordings, which included the call of red kites, a local bird of prey.

Ashton comments: ‘This was a great opportunity to work in an amazing environment again, plus a massive honour to be asked back and enjoy the opportunity of bringing the location alive through an entertaining and fun mixed media experience’.

igital technology has become the established electronic methodology for lighting control systems. However, the truth is many digital control systems are over-complicated and far too sensitive. They also rely on microprocessors and microchips, which are prone to corruption due to high-voltage spikes, and electromagnetic surges from the mains supply.

Furthermore, digital systems, with their temperamental nature, require expert attention, extremely careful handling and on-going maintenance, often carried out by costly software specialists.

Latest analogue techniquesThe reality is that lighting control is not rocket science. It’s about setting light levels, fading between and turning lighting on and off; with additional interfaces enabling connection to devices such as computers, clocks, PIRs and photocells.

Now, with new advances in analogue techniques, controls can afford professionals a simpler and more effective way of scene setting lighting,

with control of digital devices being added when additional functionality is required. They are easy for any electrical contractor to install and troubleshoot, using the truly universal signalling protocol, 0-10V to communicate between devices.

The developments in analogue techniques are made possible by advances in electronic components, which allow the creation of new algorithms that can now be implemented at far higher levels of accuracy, at greatly increased speeds and at much reduced cost.

This approach also provides lower power consumption and potentially faster response times than digital electronics,

David Fitter, lighting design director at Multiload technology, reveals how the latest advances in analogue technology combined with updated 0-10v signalling are revolutionising lighting control

thus facilitating the design of new logic circuitry, which is inherently incorruptible and establishes new levels of reliability.

drive units, forcing them to seek remote siting solutions.

In order to achieve the diverse range of desired lighting effects and satisfy the need to remotely position the controls and drive units, AECOM specified intelligent transformers, analogue mains dimmers and a scene setting system, all based on the new analogue techniques.

Martin Valentine, who headed AECOM’s design team, explains why he chose to use the latest technology: ‘All the fine area lighting scenes are controlled with devices that employ this new analogue technology. It is ideal given that the devices are powerful, configurable and once set, will stay 100 per cent stable.’

The £3.5m restoration of St Patrick’s Church, Soho, presented Liminaires Lighting, with a similar challenge to that at St Pancras: to design a lighting system that could be installed discreetly, while illuminating the building to its best potential.

Compounding the problem were restrictions on where lighting could be mounted, with many surfaces in the Grade II listed building completely out of bounds. Space for fittings was also extremely limited, leaving no room at all for the control gear.

Jin-Yee Lim principal of Liminaires, specified a solution using mainly IRC low voltage halogen and cold cathode lighting, with the proviso that the system could accommodate LEDs when these are able to replicate the lighting effect. This created a need for a control and drive gear solution that could both support halogen and cold cathode lighting and still survive the expected transition to LED.

To meet all the criteria, Lim drove the low voltage tungsten halogen using intelligent transformers to provide stabilised voltage at the lamps. Lim also chose analogue dimmers to interface the cold cathode drivers to the 0-10V control system, all of which is managed from a scene setting system.

Speaking about the refurbishment of St Patrick’s, Lim said: ‘0-10V is a tried and tested protocol, which combined with microprocessor-free circuitry means there’s far less likelihood of any type of failure within the lighting control system.’

Such scene setting systems represent a real step forward in the design of lighting control systems. In fact, the innovation has been shortlisted for the 2012 Lighting Design Awards in recognition of the enhanced levels of electronic intelligence that produce such sophisticated and incredibly reliable products.

Updated 0-10V signallingMany different digital signal protocols are used in the industry, and it can be very inconvenient and cumbersome if there has to be communication between them. Although digital signalling often uses only two wires to carry all the information to the various addresses of the system, re-addressing of replacement units can be problematic and, if anything happens to those wires, such as a break, it will cause a total system failure. Of course, troubleshooting will involve software techniques to understand what is happening.

Analogue signalling requires dedicated wires for each circuit, but any failure is easily diagnosed by an electrical contractor using a meter to measure the 0-10V signal. In analogue systems the loss of an output, caused perhaps by a broken wire, rarely means the loss of the whole system.

The most recent controls and drivers communicate using the updated analogue 0-10V signalling protocol, now often referred to as linear control. One of the most appealing aspects of 0-10V signalling is its simplicity, which means that, not only is it easy to understand, but it can be implemented and diagnosed without recourse to a software specialists.

The control signal is a DC voltage that varies between zero and ten volts, w ith a scaled output - for instance, at 10V the light could be at 100 per cent output and at 0V it could be at zero per cent output (or off). 0-10V in its updated format is low current, usually less than 1mA, which allows it to be run practically unlimited distances without any degradation of signal.

Another issue traditionally associated with both digital and old-fashioned 0-10V signalling, is that interference from nearby ac power cables can corrupt the signal to the fitting, causing flickering.

This means any signal wire running parallel to power cables over a distance usually needs to be screened. New updated format 0-10V signalling removes the need for screened cable, cutting wiring installation costs and avoiding problems for the electrical contractor.

Sophisticated and reliableThe best examples of the application of these new developments in analogue techniques can be found in the lighting systems designed for the iconic St Pancras Renaissance Hotel, Kings Cross, London, and the recently refurbished St Patrick’s Catholic Church in London’s Soho.

Lighting the newly refurbished St Pancras Hotel presented a major challenge to designer, AECOM, which had to tread a fine line between preserving a historic mood in the many spaces of the building, while adapting them for modern hotel use.

Each area within the hotel called for a distinct lighting approach with a great deal of custom work commissioned from equipment suppliers. The listed status of the building also meant the designers found themselves confronted with a lack of concealment options for the controls and

Now, with new advances in analogue techniques, controls can afford professionals a simpler and more effective way of scene setting lighting

arC brings the very best of the industry together under one roof. It’s the one show that guarantees quality design and creativity, which is why exhibitors return again and again. tL asked some of this year’s exhibitors why arC is the place to be

Projection Lighting plans to show a number of new products, including it’s newly launched XLM 4000lm and the Iris track. Having recently extended its UK factory to meet the demand of its AlphaLED luminaries, the display lighting manufacturer has a clear passion and commitment to lighting technology.

Speaking of its show attendance, Projection Lighting’s director, Jeff Stephens said: ‘ARC has always been very successful for us and we’re looking forward to meeting quality specifiers this time round. We’ve taken a bigger space for 2012 and will have a bright, graphic banner to illustrate our excellent colour rendition.’ www.projectionlighting.co.uk

LightGraphix will be showcasing a whole range of designs, from the versatile LD Flexi to its surface mounted adjustable spotlight LD51.

Robert Buxton, design and marketing manager at the company said: ‘We have chosen to exhibit at ARC for many reasons. Firstly the location is ideal for many of the lighting designers to come and visit the show. The hall itself is more intimate than other venues, which makes for a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

‘We chose 2012 to exhibit as we will be launching many new products and we have not done an exhibition for a while as we have been far too busy. It gives us the chance to meet lighting designers and specifiers, share a drink with them and talk them through new products and developments and any projects they might need specials for. We are very much looking forward to it.’ www.lightgraphix.co.uk

FOCUS ON the arC ShOw 2012

After a successful launch at last year’s ARC Show, Spectral will be returning, bringing with it the latest in LED technology and architecturally designed, commercial luminaires.

On the stand will be a number of Red Dot and iF award-winning products, including Iris, Jep, Plafou and Estra, along with the floorstanding task light, Soel.

Iris is a circular T5 luminaire, available in surface or wall mounted, suspended and recessed versions. It comprises a transparent halo body that incorporates a micro-prism diffuser wrapped in opaque or transparent plastic housing. Using control gear to allow a hollow centre, Iris features replaceable coloured foils to add a true design feature to this range.

Managing director at RIDI UK, Mike Attard commented on the appeal of Iris and the Spectral range: ‘Iris is perfectly suited to commercial environments where lighting designers need to make a bold impression. Spectral became a leading

architectural manufacturer by heavily investing in product developments, many of which, including Iris, received Red Dot Design and iF awards. Its range of luminaires sits perfectly within the RIDI group and allows us to offer an exciting new range to the UK market.’

New from Spectral and on show at ARC is Soel, a floorstanding LED down/uplighter, also suited for task lighting in office environments. The contemporary styling allows the luminaire to blend equally well into modern furnished installations or more elaborate architectural interiors. It features 30w of directional downward LEDs fitted with special lenses to create precise, cut-off lighting distribution. This design feature ensures the LEDs will illuminate just the working area and nothing else. To balance this intensive downlight element, a switchable fluorescent uplight component emits a soft ambient effect to create a fully direct/indirect light source. www.ridi.co.uk

to see?Presenting a huge range of products at this year’s show is Aquila. Familiar designs, such as Piano, a high-powered LED street light, Perla, the elegant design response to the opportunity presented by LED technology and Zea Zeo, a range of linear floodlights, will all be available. Aquila will also be unveiling a brand new product on the stand, so make sure you stop by.

Craig Stead, sales and marketing director at Aquila said: ‘We’re excited about exhibiting at the ARC Show because it’s a chance to showcase our decorative LED range to a wide range of industry professionals, and to introduce our brand new luminaire. We’re most looking forward to listening to some interesting speakers, and meeting those in the wider global lighting community.’www.aquiladesign.co.uk

Blinded By the

anish the winter gloom with a box of 80 white twinkling LED lights’, read the sales spiel on the well-

known supermarket website. With a tree in darkness and Christmas looming, I rushed to my local store for salvation, but as I suspected it might, disappointment soon followed. No warm, soft glow with the sparkle of halogen for me - just cold, harsh, blue-white light with lots of disability glare.

I thought: ‘Oh well, that wouldn’t ever happen with professional LED equipment’. But, just a few days later I came across a worrying piece of research from the US Department of Energy. One of its 2011 CALiPER reports evaluated 30 LED retrofit lamp products, including 22 MR16/PAR16, PAR20, and PAR30 equivalents. Most were marketed as solid-state lighting replacements for incandescent products that have typical CCTs in the 2700-3000K range.

Significantly, a third of the LED products had CCTs over 4000K, and one - labelled 4000K - was actually 8,837K! More than half were poor in colour quality with only two giving warm white light with a CRI over 90. Finally, all on-pack equivalency claims were inaccurate. So the message for buyers is clear – do not blindly expect equivalency – check all the performance data.

It is easy to think that getting lighting right is just a matter of achieving the right lighting level with low running costs, but there is much more to it than that. As the report concluded, buyers should make thorough comparisons, considering CCT and colour quality as well as light output and efficacy.

My earliest memory of the importance of quality of lighting was in my first lighting lesson from the late Margaret Halstead. I learnt that when selecting a light source, the first job is to choose the appropriate colour temperature, which depends upon the function of the space. The second job is the choice of colour rendering group, and this is usually determined by the nature of the task being performed.

Until the advent of LEDs, lighting designers were able to rely on the spectral power distribution of a light source, this being the characteristic that determines the effects that the lamp will have on surface colours. For instance, a halogen lamp has a smooth continua, which peaks in the infra-red, consequently their red colour rendering is excellent while the blues suffer. With narrow band LEDs we don’t have that, and often their spectra is spiked with a high blue content.

And, blue light can be harmful. It wasn’t long ago that, ANSES,

the French Agency for Food, Environmental Health and Occupational Safety raised concerns regarding high power LED light sources damaging the eye, due to the toxic effect of blue light and the risk of glare. The rapid emergence of LEDs has shown up deficiencies in the recommended colour accuracy rating system, better known as the Colour Rendering Index (CRI - Ra).

Perhaps the time has come for an update and more education on possible alternatives, such as the Colour Quality Scale (CQS)?

Luminaire design has always been concerned with controlling glare. How the light is emitted from poorly designed LED products is often unsatisfactory and glare from LEDs - a point source after all - is usually far worse than that from fluorescent. Lenses do help, but lose efficiency. The answer lies in better optics and reflector design.

We must encourage more people to understand the importance of quality lighting, and that it isn’t just a matter of lumens per watt. Buyers and specifiers must be more discerning and seek better quality and accurate data. That’s the message from festive lights and the US, which manufacturers, many of whom are new entrants with little knowledge of lighting application, can’t ignore any longer.
