2012 Objectives and Theme

Objectives

For today’s youth, standard bearers of the next generation, global environmental problems

are closely connected to their own future. This program provides participants with the

opportunity to think about, discuss and collaborate on solutions to the shared environmental

challenges that all of us face, and will help them develop skills necessary for creating

a better future by working with one another. The program also aims to deepen intercultural

understanding and to explore ways to contribute to global society by working together across

nations. Teachers, who play a crucial role in mentoring the next generation, also benefit from

the opportunity to interact with and learn from one another that the program offers.

In these ways, the program aims to contribute to the improvement of science, the environment

and intercultural understanding.

Theme

Achieving Harmony with the Earth

Climate change, ecological destruction, global population growth and economic problems…

These are the issues that lie before us awaiting solutions. How can humankind secure a

sustainable future that considers the Earth? Disasters like last year’s earthquake in Japan

and flooding in Thailand are potent reminders that we need to achieve harmony with the Earth.

Considering the issues we face will encourage participants to become leading players in the

coming generation, help them to understand the problems that already exist and, we hope,

inspire ways to find solutions.

2012 / A Brief Overview of the Camp

Last year’s Toshiba Youth Conference 2011 was re-examined due to the impact of the East Japan Earthquake and was held relocated from Japan to Thailand. After an year from the disaster, this year’s camp commemorates the 5th holding

of the conference. Along with the following year, Toshiba Youth Conference 2012 was held in Thailand, starting from

August 1st to August 8th. During the 5 years of its existence, the conference has gathered 98 students and 54 teachers from the U.S. , Thailand, Japan and Poland (Polish students and teachers have been participating from 2009).

For this year’s Toshiba Youth Conference, the participants spent a week in visiting and experiencing the natural environments of Farm Chockchai and the state of the art technology of Chulabhorn Research Institute. All students

discussed various topics in English. All of them spent a week living and eating together engaging themselves in breaking the walls of cultural differences and sharing what we have in common.

A new aspect to this year’s Toshiba Youth Conference can be seen in the opening of an e-journal site. This is a

computer based journal system where students and teachers become reporters and journalists to bring the camp experience to life.

The official home page for the Toshiba Youth Conference “act eco.net” site was efficiently used for certain programs prior to the camp, such as uploading pre-assignments. Personal communication was well managed through e-mails and

the latest SNS technology. Non-English native speakers enjoyed this camp as an opportunity to overcome cultural

differences. As for staff members, all of us had the wonderful opportunity to gather attentive members from Thailand and Japan. The administrative staff would like to thank all members for making this a wonderful and memorable conference.
