MISSION

The mission of Toshiba America Foundation (TAF) is to serve the public interest in the United States by providing financial support for math and science education through grants for teachers and schools.

HISTORY

Established in 1990 to commemorate Toshiba Corporation’s 25th year of operations in the United States, TAF was endowed by Toshiba Corporation and the Toshiba America Group Companies.

GRANTS

Toshiba America Foundation’s grants fund projects designed by individual classroom teachers. This “direct-to-teacher” approach brings immediate results. Teachers are able to change the way they teach science and mathematics because the grant supports equipment for hands-on experiments and inquiry-based approaches to the curriculum. At TAF, we believe that doing science and math is a lot more fun than just reading a textbook. TAF grants provide teachers with the tools they need to be more effective educators. The grants make the classroom a more exciting place for both teachers and students.

Environmental Grants

Science in service of environmental stewardship is important to U.S. teachers and to Toshiba America Foundation. Over the years, the Foundation has supported projects that monitor wildlife, water quality, soil, air, and energy use. If teachers and students want to help care for a special place in their community or make some aspect of their school life greener, TAF is there with grants to support their efforts.

In celebration of its 20th anniversary, Toshiba America Foundation awarded special grants to five schools in Orange County, California. Student teams, in consultation with a teacher coach, used grant funds to design and execute a project intended to make their world a greener place. At the end of the project, students teams will submit video reports about their efforts.

Toshiba Youth Conference for a

Sustainable Future offers high

opportunity to think creatively

about how to build a more

sustainable world while

developing lasting friendships

with students from other

cultures.

During the school year, teams

of students from four countries

–Japan, Poland, Thailand and

United States– conduct

research and share ideas

about environmental topics.

When the school year is over, students travel to Japan for a week

long summer camp devoted to sharing what they have learned and

to developing proposals and action plans to take back to their home

communities.

While in Japan, students visit sites of environmental interest, ranging

from traditional farms to high tech facilities where they meet with

local scholars and experts. Sharing meals and traveling together

helps students to bridge cultural and language barriers and to

develop a deeper understanding of their world.

A dedicated website, www.act-eco.net, enables conference

participants to share their experiences and discoveries with each

other and with the world.
