Rodeman chose Torchmatebecause the company was local, responsive and deliveredindustry-leading technology andtechnical support. The WashoeCounty School District, of whichRodeman's school is a part, usesfive Torchmate CNC machines, ranging in size from thecompany's "4X4" machine to the"4X8."

Torchmate has trainedinstructors on the fullcapabilities of each machine, and is constantly available, freeof charge, for in-depth technicalsupport, ensuring that studentsand instructors are able to usethe full capabilities of eachmachine.

"That was the biggest thing thatI wanted when I purchased aCNC machine for the classroom -a good support system," saidRodeman.

Today, the Torchmate machineis an integral part of Rodeman'sclassroom philosophy, wherestudents are taught not justindividual skills, but the creativeprocess of building somethingfrom the ground up that usesmultiple manufacturingapplications in one project.

"We are focused on teachingthem how to fabricate, how tothink, how things go together,"said Rodeman.

JULY 11, 2011Torchmate 2x2 CNC Prototyping Machine - Review

CNC Machines live in that mysterious world of the professional metal shop. You've got to be a pretty intense dude to have one of these things in yourgarage. What they are is automatic cutting systems that work through acomputer program. Draw something in a CAD program, load it over to the CNCmachine and it carves or cuts out the shape. These things are usually massiveand some of them are even encased in a large chamber with a constant oilspray to lube up the cut.

So anyway, Torchmate, a well-respected name in the CNC world has recentlyreleased a smaller version of their popular machine. This new one, the 2x2 hasa much smaller bed and is intended to be a user-friendly version of their largermachines, one that will hopefully appeal to the average Joe hobbyist. They werenice enough to send us one to play around with for a while and we happilyagreed.

We should make it clear right off that bat that before using the Torchmate, wewere only vaguely familiar with CNC machines...we'd seen them in action andhad been involved in projects where they needed to be implemented for onereason or another, but as far as our actual hands on time goes...well...not awhole lot. Our CAD experience wasn't a whole lot more advanced either. Wewere familiar with the program and had indeed used it a few times, but wewere by no means an expert. In the Torchmate 2x2 promotional material weread informed us that, like we said, the machine is accessible to hobbyists and(we supposed) first time CNC users. We saw ourselves as the guinea pigs of thissecond group. Our cluelessness would serve to test out how well Torchmatepresented their item for the everyday knucklehead.

The CNC Machine has a few main components; the machine itself, theelectronics unit, and the computer program. The 2x2 can be set up with aplasma cutter or a router. We don't have a plasma cutter, so we went with therouter option and our Bosch Colt fit perfectly in the clamping arm. Actually, weread somewhere the the router arm attachment is specifically designed for theBosch Colt.

Without getting into too many details (and there are millions of them), we wereup and running in no time at all. It was actually kind of shocking how quickly ittook us to load the program, set the machine up, and get one of the tutorialsgoing. The package comes with a little test pattern to make sure thateverything is working properly and seeing the router slide around the table onits own was enough to make us dive into the tool.

The Torchmate is available with two CAD programs (at an additional cost), oneis a basic one that carries the Torchmate name, the other is much moreadvanced and is intended for the more complex items. If you're not familiarwith CAD, think of it sort of like PhotoShop in that you can learn the basics in notime, but if you want to dig into the pro level, there's no end of the digging youcan do. The capabilities of the thing are pretty crazy.

For our purposes, we puttered around with signs and things like that. Simplestuff. And it wasn't all that difficult to get the general grasp of things. Again, ithappened much faster than we were expecting.

The Torchmate CNC program (which is what communicates the cutting patternto the electronics box) is easy to use and, as with the CAD program, you candive in a little or a lot. All of the instructions are well laid out and easy tounderstand and cross reference. Torchmate has managed to make it all veryuser friendly.

So the 2x2 is basically a shrunken down CNC machine, one that is sized for agarage or a small workshop (or the back of a truck for transport to the jobsite),and with all of that comes a shrunken down price. The Torchmate 2x2 sells forjust under $3000. This doesn't include the router or the water table or the CADprograms, but those can easily be had as extras. It's a solid chunk of change, nodoubt, but if this type of thing is something you'd be serious about getting into, this is a place to start (and possibly finish, depending on your needs). As for us,we re-crated the machine and sent it back to Torchmate, confident that we onlyscratched the surface of its capabilities.

Here's a video of the 2x2 in action:

People do not buy personal CNC (computer numerical controlled) cutting centers everyday. In fact, this technology used to be reservedfor only the deep-pocketed machine shop elite. So, when I took the time to consider what most home shop machinists might go throughwhen they set up their first system, I knew first I would have to take into account the fact that there is a large variation in individuals’experiences with CNC cutting machines.

Most metalworking, woodworking, and DIY enthusiasts have a detailed knowledge of the hand-held processes and skills that are requiredto complete their projects, but they are often lacking experience in the world of fully automated computerized tools, which could causethem serious problems down the road when it should be making their job easier. CNC can help increase the efficiency and accuracy ofyour shop, but only if you take the proper precautions and preventative measures.

Following here is my list of considerations for first-time CNC users when they take the step of setting up a new system. Once you have

these details down, you will be producing intricate, professional-quality parts and pieces in a fraction of the time, with far fewer mishaps.

1.) Maintenance & Organization. Many common problems are easy to prevent with proper preparation and maintenance of your CNCwork area and equipment. Anybody who works in a shop for a living or for fun knows that a clean work area is crucial to organization andefficiency when completing a project. But, most people forget that CNC cutting machines are still computers operated by electricalcircuits.

Dust danger. Metal dust on electronic circuits is usually a very bad thing. Metal dust sitting on a circuit board can cause shorts across thetraces (tiny metal paths on the board) and cause components to fail. So, if you are operating in a dirty or metallic dust-riddenenvironment, it is always good practice to remove the cover from the electronics boxes as well as the computer, every few months, toblow away with clean dry air any metal dust that has accumulated on the electronic boards.

Cable clutter. With computer control comes cords. You would not string electrical cords across your house: Do not do it with CNC wiresin your shop either. Keep motor and height control cables free and clear of foot traffic to prevent any accidental tripping or cable damage. This will prevent damage to a drive card as well as to someone’s ego if they trip and fall over them in the shop. When disconnectingmotor cables, make sure that the box powering the motors is turned off.

In most cases pulling a cable out from a drive card that is turned on will do nothing, however there is a chance that a short circuit causeby unplugging while powered will result in a failure of the components of the card. When this happens, cards may cost hundreds of dollarsto replace.

Positioning. Make sure that the torch lead is located on one side of the cable carrier, and the motor and height control cables are locatedare on the other side of the cable carrier. This tip is mostly for older plasma units but it is good practice for all machines. When the plasmacutter fires there is a surge of power through the torch lead. Separating the wires helps prevent any induction of electrical current from thelead to the control wires. While separating them is key, the better practice is to prevent them from crossing. If they have to cross makesure that they cross 90 degrees to each other. Also avoid coiling cables to avoid inductance.

Tips. The drier the air in your area, the longer consumable tips will last. Of course, a torch tip can only last so long but if you to noticethem wearing out a lot faster than you expect, or are told to expect, air quality may be the culprit. (I would say this is the case in perhaps25 percent of poor cuts.) Empty your air dryers and the air tank itself (the main function of the purge setting is to set air pressure whileflowing the type of slag that can accumulate on a torch tip will not blow away with the purge setting, I wouldn’t mention this as a goodpractice). This is easy to forget about, but it is crucial to getting the most out of your consumables. If you continue to experiencesignificant tip wear, make sure your plasma cutter is selected on the right amperage setting that matches the tip you are using in the torch;proper cutting height can also extend consumable life.

2.) Height control preparation. In order to use your CNC cutting machine to the best of its ability and get the right cut every time.Height control has to be a top priority. If it is not taken into consideration it will make for a far less constructive CNC job.

Physical testing. Before cutting with a height control it is critical that the settings are checked without firing the torch. Most heightcontrols have the option to drop to the operating height without firing the torch; this can controlled be either through the software orheight control. For most cutting the torch height will be 1/8” to 3/16” away from the material. Plasma manufacturers will publish chartswith recommended cut settings, and in general these will give a good cut. Setting the height too high or too low can result in poor cutquality, incomplete cuts, or torch damage.

Automatic safety. Never start using a height control in automatic mode. Leave the unit in manual mode and cut a straight line, and watchthe current voltage being displayed. That is the average voltage at which to set your height control to safely transition into automaticmode. When a safe voltage is set, the voltage can be fine tuned for the best overall cut. As the voltage, gets lower, the torch will cut lowerto the plate. The higher the voltage, the higher it will cut from the plate when in auto mode.

3.) Computer Glitches. Considering that CNC cutting machines are susceptible to glitches like any other computer, it is always best toprepare for them to prevent your project from being ruined or incomplete.

Process is everything. When operating a CNC cutting machine, finding a sequence or methodology that works for you is critical.Throughout the process of creating a part certain things need to happen in order to prevent problems. Ironing out the steps that work foryou is critical. Familiarize yourself with the whole process of designing, tool-pathing, and cutting a part. The same process to cut a simplesquare can be applied to an entire laid-out sheet of intricate parts.

The Top 3 Ways to Prevent CNC Cutting Machine MishapsJack Douglass06/02/2011

People do not buy personal CNC (computer numerical controlled) cutting centers everyday. Infact, this technology used to be reserved for only the deep-pocketed machine shop elite. So, whenI took the time to consider what most home shop machinists might go through when they set uptheir first system, I knew first I would have to take into account the fact that there is a largevariation in individuals’ experiences with CNC cutting machines.

Most metalworking, woodworking, and DIY enthusiasts have a detailed knowledge of thehand-held processes and skills that are required to complete their projects, but they are oftenlacking experience in the world of fully automated computerized tools, which could cause themserious problems down the road when it should be making their job easier. CNC can help increasethe efficiency and accuracy of your shop, but only if you take the proper precautions andpreventative measures.

Following here is my list of considerations for first-time CNC users when they take the step ofsetting up a new system. Once you have these details down, you will be producing intricate,professional-quality parts and pieces in a fraction of the time, with far fewer mishaps.

1.) Maintenance & Organization. Many common problems are easy to prevent with properpreparation and maintenance of your CNC work area and equipment. Anybody who works in ashop for a living or for fun knows that a clean work area is crucial to organization and efficiencywhen completing a project. But, most people forget that CNC cutting machines are still computersoperated by electrical circuits.

Dust danger. Metal dust on electronic circuits is usually a very bad thing. Metal dust sitting on acircuit board can cause shorts across the traces (tiny metal paths on the board) and causecomponents to fail. So, if you are operating in a dirty or metallic dust-ridden environment, it isalways good practice to remove the cover from the electronics boxes as well as the computer, every few months, to blow away with clean dry air any metal dust that has accumulated on theelectronic boards.

Cable clutter. With computer control comes cords. You would not string electrical cords acrossyour house: Do not do it with CNC wires in your shop either. Keep motor and height control cablesfree and clear of foot traffic to prevent any accidental tripping or cable damage. This will preventdamage to a drive card as well as to someone’s ego if they trip and fall over them in the shop. When disconnecting motor cables, make sure that the box powering the motors is turned off.

In most cases pulling a cable out from a drive card that is turned on will do nothing, howeverthere is a chance that a short circuit cause by unplugging while powered will result in a failure ofthe components of the card. When this happens, cards may cost hundreds of dollars to replace.

Positioning. Make sure that the torch lead is located on one side of the cable carrier, and themotor and height control cables are located are on the other side of the cable carrier. This tip ismostly for older plasma units but it is good practice for all machines. When the plasma cutter firesthere is a surge of power through the torch lead. Separating the wires helps prevent any inductionof electrical current from the lead to the control wires. While separating them is key, the betterpractice is to prevent them from crossing. If they have to cross make sure that they cross 90degrees to each other. Also avoid coiling cables to avoid inductance.

Tips. The drier the air in your area, the longer consumable tips will last. Of course, a torch tip canonly last so long but if you to notice them wearing out a lot faster than you expect, or are told toexpect, air quality may be the culprit. (I would say this is the case in perhaps 25 percent of poorcuts.) Empty your air dryers and the air tank itself (the main function of the purge setting is toset air pressure while flowing the type of slag that can accumulate on a torch tip will not blowaway with the purge setting, I wouldn’t mention this as a good practice). This is easy to forgetabout, but it is crucial to getting the most out of your consumables. If you continue to experiencesignificant tip wear, make sure your plasma cutter is selected on the right amperage setting thatmatches the tip you are using in the torch; proper cutting height can also extend consumable life.

2.) Height control preparation. In order to use your CNC cutting machine to the best of itsability and get the right cut every time. Height control has to be a top priority. If it is not takeninto consideration it will make for a far less constructive CNC job.

Physical testing. Before cutting with a height control it is critical that the settings are checked

without firing the torch. Most height controls have the option to drop to the operating heightwithout firing the torch; this can controlled be either through the software or height control. Formost cutting the torch height will be 1/8” to 3/16” away from the material. Plasma manufacturerswill publish charts with recommended cut settings, and in general these will give a good cut.Setting the height too high or too low can result in poor cut quality, incomplete cuts, or torchdamage.

Automatic safety. Never start using a height control in automatic mode. Leave the unit in manualmode and cut a straight line, and watch the current voltage being displayed. That is the averagevoltage at which to set your height control to safely transition into automatic mode. When a safevoltage is set, the voltage can be fine tuned for the best overall cut. As the voltage, gets lower, the torch will cut lower to the plate. The higher the voltage, the higher it will cut from the platewhen in auto mode.

3.) Computer Glitches. Considering that CNC cutting machines are susceptible to glitches likeany other computer, it is always best to prepare for them to prevent your project from beingruined or incomplete.

Process is everything. When operating a CNC cutting machine, finding a sequence or methodologythat works for you is critical. Throughout the process of creating a part certain things need tohappen in order to prevent problems. Ironing out the steps that work for you is critical. Familiarizeyourself with the whole process of designing, tool-pathing, and cutting a part. The same processto cut a simple square can be applied to an entire laid-out sheet of intricate parts.

Torchmate's 2X2 CNC Machine Makes Computer-Automated Fabricating Affordable May 2, 2011

Before Torchmate’s recently released 2X2 CNC Prototyping System came along, computer-automated fabrication was reserved for deep-pocketed metal shops. Torchmate’s newest offering changes all that — packing industry-leading, computer-operated metal-cutting machinery into a mobile and affordable package that fits into any garage, and any budget.

Hobbyists, off-road vehicle owners, fabricators and small shop owners can now build intricate and professional-quality parts using the versatile 2X2. Sold with versatile software, and compatible with multiple tools, the 2X2’s functions are repeatable, precise and fast. The 2X2 cuts, drills, engraves and can be used as a router and plasma cutter.

Using a 2X2, an off-road vehicle owner could beef up his suspension or customize a rig for a demanding off-road race. Hobbyists can manufacture custom metal parts in their garage. And for welders, engineers and small metal shops owners, the uses of the 2X2 are truly endless.

“This is a smaller version of a very expensive machine,” said Torchmate CEO Bill Kunz. “Torchmate has worked hard to create a machine that has all the capabilities of a prototyping machine that typically costs tens of thousands of dollars, but is offered at less than $3,000 for the basic machine.”

APRIL 2011 INDUSTRY WATCH: BUSINESS Apr. 19, 2011

TORCHMATE (RENO, NV) . . .

is partnering with retailer 4 Wheel Parts to put affordable 2×2 CNC prototyping metal-cutting machinery into the hands of hobbyists, off

roaders and small metal shops across the country. Everyone knew that the time would eventually come when shops everywhere could

look at CNC technology and robotics as just another tool, like a mill, lathe, router, bandsaw or drill press, rather than some daunting thing

that is out of their reach and comprehension. That time is now.

To highlight the new partnership and value to off-road vehicle owners, Torchmate sent truckloads of their 2X2 CNC prototyping systems

to the King of the Hammers off-road racing event to be purchased from 4 Wheel Parts or delivered to 4 Wheel Parts customers who pre-

ordered. The thousands of attendees at the Southern California racing event were offered a $500 discount on three machine models —

the basic 2X2 CNC machine called the Last Chance Qualifier ($2,980 with discount), the upgraded Main Event package ($3,730 with

discount) and the premium 2X2 automated system called the Hammer King ($6,440 with discount). www.torchmate.com

Torchmate Dual CNC Machine

March 18th, 14:00 We have seen a few small CNC routers in the past, the CNC Shark that Rockler sells, and the DIY build kits, but the Torchmate 2x2 CNC machine has a unique feature that sets it apart. The Torchmate 2x2 is the first CNC that I have seen that can do both CNC routing and CNC plasma cutting on the same machine. Torchmate likes to call it a prototyping machine, and because of its small size and its multiple functions, I would have to agree.

Hobbyists, woodworkers, fabricators and small shop owners can now build intricate and professional-quality parts using the versatile 2X2. Sold with versatile software, and compatible with multiple tools, the 2X2's functions are repeatable, precise and fast. The 2X2 cuts, drills, engraves and can be used as a router and plasma cutter.

The basic 2 axis Torchmate costs just under $3000 and you have to provide your own plasma cutter and build your own stand, or you can purchase their water table for $750. If you want to do CNC routing, you will need to spend an extra $770 to get the third Z-axis and this comes with a Bosch Colt 1HP router. This would be a pretty big investment for anyone interested, but the online reviews look good. If you want to see what it can do, check out the video below.

CNC Prototyping Package, Straight to Market 02/03/2011

A new manufacturer-retailer partnership is promising to put affordable, automated, metal-cutting machinery into stores nationwide, so machine shops as well as hobbyists, craftsman, and even “off-roaders” can acquire versatile prototyping equipment for their own use.

Torchmate’s 2X2 CNC Prototyping System combines computer-automated, plasma-cutting, routing, drilling and engraving into a mobile and affordable package that will be made available at 4 Wheel Parts, the U.S.’s largest distributor of 4x4 components and accessories, for trucks, Jeeps, and SUVs. 4 Wheel Parts operates 55 retail locations nationwide, as well as an online retail destination.

The Torchmate system is versatile, but compact, and automated so that it can be used by off-road drivers to fabricate frame and suspension components. It also brings precision to the job, so it’s effective for professional metal shops as a cutting or engraving tool for their fabrication projects.

“The response to our latest Torchmate 2x2 CNC Prototyping System has been overwhelming,” according to Torchmate CEO Bill Kunz. “The partnership with 4WheelParts is going to allow us to get the word out much faster, that CNC plasma cutting and routing technology is available to everyone, and not only the fabricating elite.”
