Service Hour Opportunities
By Isabelle Peters
Sophomore Mae Grace Medlin has
already completed 107 service
hours!
When did you begin your service
hours for high school?
I started the summer before
Freshman year, I figured it was a
good idea to get a head start.
What is the main activity you did
for service hours?
Most of my hours consisted of
volunteering at the VA. I also altar
serve and help with the children’s
choir.
Where did you learn about these
activities?
I learned about these opportunities
through the school and the
American Legion.
What advice would you give
someone still trying to get service
hours?
Just ask around the local
businesses or Mrs. Cho. People
always need help, and it’s a very
rewarding experience.
Student of the Month
By Farrah Anderson
Freshman Andy Craig was
selected as the January Student of
the Month from the Tops News
Team. He is involved in cross
country, golf, track, and baseball.
He said that he “helps out at the
school’s sporting events as much
as possible” and contributes to
school activities. Positive and
dedicated, he models good
character and student
responsibility. He says that his
“best class is probably biology,”
where he learns a lot and enjoys
putting effort into what he does.
Thank you for setting a positive
and uplifting example for our
students.
Teacher of the Month
-Anaya Peoples and Janiah Newell
The January Teacher of the month
from the Tops News Team is
Mrs. Oakwood. She graduated
from Danville High School and
Eastern Illinois University. She has
three wonderful children Dusty,
Cody, and Kelli and two
grandchildren, Lucas and Jonas,
who both are now attending
school at the South Campus. Mrs.
Oakwood has been a teacher for
38 years, 16 of which have been at
Schlarman. “My favorite memory,”
she said, “was when I went into
my room and found an envelope
with $25 in it with an anonymous
note stating a student had wanted
to get her something special for
her classroom.” When asked what she would do as
president for a day, Mrs. Oakwood
proclaimed, “I would appoint more
women. We could use more
women in government jobs.” Her
father was the most influential
person in her life. “He was my
hero.” Her favorite quote is from
Ralph Waldo Emerson: “It is not
length of life, but depth of life.”
Thank you Mrs. Oakwood for being
a very positive influence for
students at Schlarman.
The Tops News Team is very excited to have produced the
third newspaper this year and is in the middle of forming the
fourth. If you like writing and are interested in becoming a
member of the Tops News Team then please inform Emma
Wilkins, Mollie DeBord, or Mrs. Sacheli.

7th/8th Grade Activities –
Isabelle Peters
Some things going on this month
are boys basketball, toppettes,
girls volleyball, and archery. The
7th grade boys basketball team
went to regionals. Toppettes
performances have been going
very well, and the team has grown
to include nine members. They still
have performances at the
basketball games on February 2,
February 9, and February 16.
Junior High Volleyball just started,
so keep an eye out for the game
schedule and support our lady
toppers!
Wonderful Art—Emma Wilkins,
Anaya Peoples, and Janiah Newell
KeShawn Lillard has great talent
when it comes to artwork. He
stated drawing in the 4th grade.
Inspired singer by Chris Brown, he
started and developed a passion
for drawing flowers. He listens to
music while he draws and by his
8th grade year he realized he had
talent. KeShawn never traces and
also enjoys sketching and painting.
As of right now, he doesn’t feel like
he will pick a career of art; it is just
a way to express him self.
March for Life– Emma Wilkins
This year 26 Hill-Toppers
volunteered to go to the March for
Life in Washington D.C. As a Cath-
olic school, we support the right
for life and believe that there is
help readily to be given to those
with no other option. I personally
love how the student body can
come together to help support and
influence not only young adult
lives, but all people.
Jaida Green, a Senior at
Schlarman, marched for the first
time this year. “I marched because
I strongly agree with what we are
standing up for,” Jaida said. “Why
say nothing when you can be the
bigger person.”
The Schlarman group also went to
many of the monuments and
museums in Washington D.C.
Maddy Sermersheim, who went on
the trip for the second time this
year, informed me that they went to
the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the
Washington Monument, the
Lincoln Memorial, Arlington
Cemetery, and the Holocaust Mu-
seum.
Mrs. Sacheli, the trip planner,
regretted that the government was
shut down during the time when
the group was scheduled to visit
the White House. They
unfortunately were not allowed
inside but they did get to see the
grounds.
“One of the most important
aspects of the trip was the
realization that you are not alone
and that you’re experiencing and
marching for the same cause,” said
Senior Winnie Zheng.

Dear
Des
Dear Des, if
you could
change one
thing about
yourself
when you
were a Fresh-
man, what
would it be?
-I actually wouldn’t change
anything about myself. I wish I
would have been more active in
school activities: such as going to
more athletic games and
homecoming activities, I actually
might have changed how I
behaved in Mr. Calkins class with
Sierra Bell, Sydney Gouard, and
Janiah Newell. Overall my
Freshman year was good and I en-
joyed every bit of it!
Dear Des , which historical figure
would you like to be or you think
relates to you?
-I would want to be like Michelle
Obama. She was the first African
American woman at the White
House. Mrs. Obama is smart,
pretty, and a lawyer. The only thing
I don’t like about her is the food
program she created.
Dear Des, what would you do if you
were invisible for a day?
-First, I would eat as much food
that I wanted since no one would
see me. Next, I would fly to
California because it’s so beautiful
there. No one would notice, but I
wouldn't have to pay for a single
thing. Lastly, I would want to stop
a robbery from happening.

Valentine’s Day
By Emma Wilkins
Hilltopper family, Valentine’s Day is approaching us! We all love getting sweet chocolates, cute cards, and vibrant flowers. I know Valentine’s Day can also be a depressing day if you don’t have someone special to spend it with. We, Tops News Team, decided that this year, instead of dwelling over some girl or guy we will be making
valentines for our celebrity crush!
Since we are so excited about making a valentine’s day card for that one person in the world that we absolutely drool over, we wanted to share the excitement with you! Tops News leaders, Emma Wilkins and Mollie DeBord, will be holding a contest for the best designed and most creative
valentine.
If The Tops News Team chooses your valentine then you will receive Valentine’s Day candy! Inappropri-ate cards or sayings are not per-mitted. Once you feel as that your valentine is up to your standards then please turn it in to the box on the wall leading to the cafeteria or hand it directly to Emma Wilkins, Mollie DeBord, or Mrs. Sacheli. We will announce the due date and the winner of the contest in the morn-ing and afternoon announcements. Happy Valentine’s day and be
creative.
We are having a contest! Once you finish the word search above, cut the section out, put your name and grade at the top, and turn it in to Emma Wilkins, Mollie DeBord or in the box on the wall going to the cafeteria. Once all the word searches have been turned in, we will draw one winner. If you are the lucky winner then you will get a free jeans day pass. Have a fun time with
your puzzles!

Sports
Girls’ Basketball
By Sydney Gouard and Sarita
Kumpuckal
With the season ending, the Schlarman Girls’ Basketball team has been on an 11 game winning streak. Their win vs. Milford, 85-32, last Monday night was a total blowout. Also, the home game against Oakwood Thursday night was a great win with a score of 71 to 33. Sectionals began the third week of February and we expect everyone to show up and
support our Lady Toppers!
Archery
By Sydney Gouard and Sarita
Kumpuckal
The Schlarman Archery team has been on target this year since the win in the Phoenix Firebird Shootout in Chicago, but sadly lost last Friday in the Jefferson Jaguar Schweighar Shootout. Check out the archery team shoot the lights out this Saturday
against Champaign Centennial!
Boys Basketball
By Emma Wilkins
The boys basketball team have fought hard this season. Currently they have not won any games yet but they truly fight hard. February 6th, they fought against Armstrong and nearly won. Chris Stanley, a senior, is they Captain this year. Come support our boys and cheer them into victory in their future
games.
Cheer
By Winnie Zheng and Emma
Wilkins
There are five Seniors on the
cheer squad this year, one of which is Elijah Williams. Also, there is one Sophomore and four Freshman who have been partici-pating and learning from the ded-icated seniors. Alicia Moody is the coach for the Cheer Team this year. Jayden King is the Captain of their team and Jaida Green is the Co-Captain. You can see their wonderful routines at the High School boys basketball
games
Scholastic Bowl
By Sara Switzer
Scholastic Bowl is about traveling to other schools to see which school has the most knowledge, recall, and reflexes. It is a quiz based competition that tests players on a wide variety of academic subjects. Schlarman
Academy’s first match will be February 8th at Westville High
School.
Remarks
By Mr. Croy
How does one avoid drama? How
does one avoid confrontation?
Determine what battles are im-portant. Breathe, take a few seconds to ponder, then respond
calmly.
If someone is being unkind, ask yourself whether that person’s opinion matters to you. If it doesn’t , then why bother responding? If they refuse to stop, choose a different tack– thank him or her for their opinion
and walk away.
If a friend is being rude, (s)he may be unaware of how (s)he is coming across. Give him/her the benefit of the doubt; God may have placed you in the moment to be His ambassador. Listen, try to diffuse the situation with a compliment or wise advice. Over-look the offense, forgive, and they may realize their error later
and apologize.
Please support the upcoming fundraisers for the individual
classes this semester:
