    Topic 8.0Introduction to Ceiling Estimation

    What is Ceiling?

Ceiling is the visible overhead surface of a room and the material used to cover

this surface. It provides the function as sound-absorption surface, as holder

concealment of utility lines and xtures of electrical, plumbing and heating and air-

    conditioning.

There are two types of ceiling construction, the non-suspended and suspended

ceiling. on suspended ceiling is installed directly under the bottom chords of the

trusses and rafters. This is method is used if the maximum clear height of the

ceiling height is desired. !owever, non-suspended method of ceiling construction

come in two "inds, one that is traditionally concealing the entire roof or #oor

framing and the other one that is exposing the roof or #oor framing except thepurlins from where the ceiling surface is attached to.

$uspended ceiling is the method of ceiling construction from where the ceiling

surface line is suspended from the bottom of the roof or #oor framing %oists to

create designs and variations of ceiling heights.

    Ceiling Frames and Materials

&ood ceiling frames are called ceiling %oists. It consists of %oists from where the

ceiling boards are nailed to and nailers to help secure the rigidity of the %oists'

attachment to the roof or #oor framing. (or steel framing construction, the frames

are called metal trac"s. The metal can either be in form of channels or tees. It is

usually secured with the manufacturer's specications. !owever, in some instances

where the channels are used as ceiling frames, it is commonly constructed as if

using the wood. The only di)erence is the material used and the method of

    attachment.

Ceiling boards can either be a *+ or +/ thic" plywood or *+ thic" ber

cement boards or +/ or *+ thic" gypsum boards. The decision on what material

to use as ceiling board depends to the area of location, applicable installation

method and the budget to execute the ceiling design.

    Some Basics of Ceiling

*. Ceiling design, choice of materials and method of construction seem minute

details but greatly enhance the overall interior design of the house. The ceiling design

must contribute to the owner's preference and character of the house. The choice of

materials to be used, either wood %oists or steel frames must suit to the availability of

the budget and materials in the area for procurement and maintenance. The method

of construction shall be given emphasis for the purpose of sound engineering.
