You may be thinking about finances and what you’re going to cook for the family Further information What have you got in? Have a look at what’s already in your cupboards, fridge and freezer. Get the children to help make a list of all the foods you already have. Ready steady cook! Ask the children to help to put together meals with the existing foods, be prepared to improvise, substitute or try new recipes. Could you make enough to freeze it for another day? Minimise waste Make sure you use any perishable foods first, cooking and refrigerating or freezing will extend its shelf life or making soups or sauces from vegetables that need to be used. Save your money Use cheaper plant based protein such as lentils, beans and chickpeas instead of meat for family favourites as they save money and last longer. Make extra portions and freeze for later. Try out new things Let the kids experiment and try new foods without the added pressure of time, let them prepare such things as carrot and cucumber sticks as a snack. Get them to make of list of all the new foods they’ve tried and rate them out of 10. Use what you can find The supermarket may have sold out of longer life foods, but there are still plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables which can be made into healthy meals such as vegetable shepherd’s pie and soups. These can be frozen for another day. Involve the whole family Involve the children in cooking and find fun teaching opportunities, talk about numbers and colours.
