BONNEVILLE FORGE COUNCIL
President’s Message Long time member DeLoy Larsen passed away November 12th. DeLoy was one of the original members of the Bonneville Forge Council. A visit to his shop was like going to a Disneyland for a blacksmiths. The things he made, the equipment he engineered and built were truly remarkable. He was a gifted and talented smith. We will miss you DeLoy. The numbers are in from our fall conference and despite the great turn out and the generous donations for the auction we had a loss of about $1000.00. As a result of this loss the BFC board will be looking at what changes might be necessary and what we can do to improve our revenue for future conferences. The one thing that will help greatly and we need more of are, new members! Our club membership numbers have been stagnant for quite some time. Help BFC by getting others involved and getting the word out about our group, each new member will help.
We are making changes to the BFC website. First off, I’d like to thank Ken VanMoorhem for the years he has managed the BFC website, he has donated a lot of his time to this effort and it’s been greatly appreciated. The new website will easily allow our club officers themselves to add pictures, newsletters, updates and more. There is also a blog where you can post items for sale, let others know how you are doing and ask a question. (www.bfcsmiths.com)
The January meeting is just around the corner, so if you haven’t made something for the auction or found something for the Iron in the Hat please do! There will be an Iron Trade for those that also bring something for either the Iron in the Hat or the Auction.
It’s that time of year when the weather has cooled off and has made it a great time to get out and do some blacksmithing so get out there and happy hammering!

In Memory
I recently sent an email to Birk Peterson , one of Deloy's many friends, saying that Deloy was one of the most talented and gifted men I have known. With no advanced education, all that he accomplished was remarkable. I always felt that he was a true genius. He was always extremely gracious, kind, humble and modest. He was generous with his knowledge, time and possessions.
When I go out into my shop there are many mementos, memories and knowledge that I hold dear that Deloy has left with me. Birk responded, “ I too hold De Loy in high esteem. I feel the same way about him as you do, and I'm sure that feeling is shared by everyone he came in contact with.”

BONNEVILLE FORGE COUNCIL
January Conference
Paul will be hosting the spring conference at Lightning Forge at 4757 Plum Street, Murray,
UT 84123-3612. The conference is scheduled for January 14 & 15. Registration starts at 8:30
and the demo at 9:00 a.m..
Once again we have scheduled a great demonstrator, John
Medwedeff, who has demonstrated for us before. He will be
demonstrating Forging Steel and Bronze, Design, Frabication
and Finnishing of Sculptural Pieces. The fee will be $25.00.
John Medwedeff has been producing site-specific public
sculpture, sculptural fountains, architectural ironwork,
and furniture for over 25 years. His work is represented in
private and public collections including the John Deere
Collection, the Metal Museum, the Illinois State Museum, the University School of
Nashville, and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.
In 2009 John Medwedeff: Sculptor & Metalsmith, a one-person exhibition, was
Some of Deloys work
The first time I visited Deloy’s shop I couldn’t keep my
eyes still, there were so many fascinating and interesting
things to look at, it was like walking into a candy store as
a kid. The first thing I noticed about Deloy was his sense
of humor and his delightful attitude. It was always
enjoyable to talk and visit with Deloy. I was always
impressed by the amount of detail he would put into
everything he built. Nothing had just a plain look to it;
there were scrolls, hearts, blinking lights, moving parts
inside moving parts. He had a mind that never rested. He
will truly be missed by all.

held at the University Museum at SIU Carbondale. This exhibition was curated by Nate
Steinbrink. Maquettes of his recent sculpture (Wellspring and Willow) are featured in
the Iron 2010: A Juried Exhibition of Contemporary Blacksmithing
exhibition which began at the Metal Museum in Memphis and is now travelling to
several venues.
Experiences and memories of landscapes and rivers from his youth in Tennessee
and adult life in the Midwest influence the shape and form of John's work. Childhood
travels to Japan, Thailand, Hong Kong, Egypt, Greece, Germany, India, and Alaska
exposed him to a range of culture, geology, art, and architecture. At 19 he began a 3-
year blacksmithing apprenticeship with Jim Wallace at the National Ornamental Metal
Museum in Memphis, TN and afterwards earned his Master of Fine Arts degree from
SIU Carbondale.
Concurrent with running his studio, John has curated exhibitions, taught sculpture and
blacksmithing workshops at numerous craft schools, and lectured at universities and
symposia across the country. His art has been featured in Ironwork Today 2 by Jeffrey
Snyder (2008); Metall Design 2006, produced by the German metal arts journal
Hephaistos; Direct Metal Sculpture and Ironwork Today by Dona Meilach; and the
journals Sculpture, Art & Antiques, Architectural Digest, and Metalsmith. He has
also written the forward for and has work included in "From Fire to Form, Sculpture
from the Modern Blacksmith and Metalsmith" published in March, 2009. WTTW
Chicago and WSIU Carbondale recently featured John in Arts Across Illinois and
WSIU In Focus in-depth public television programs about his life and work.

November’s Meeting at Shane Hall’s shop was a great success. A number of forges was set
up and members had opportunity to make forged
sleigh bells. Shane had a great venue for this. He had
a both his workshop and garage set up to do the
forgings, allowing members to spread out as they
worked on the bells. Thanks Shane for a great demo
and your great hospitality!
