If Hollywood movies are to be believed, diamond heists seem to happen all the time, and are almost always perpetrated by suave gentlemen in Armani suits. The truth is, diamond thefts do happen more often than most people realize, and the outcomes of the attempts are as varied as diamonds themselves. Although many would-be thieves will eventually be caught, others are never brought to justice.

10.       When: December 1, 2002Where: The Museon Museum, The Hague, NetherlandsHow Much: $12 million What makes this robbery unique is that investigators still have absolutely no idea how the robbery was pulled off. The Museon is a science museum that was putting on a public diamond exhibit intended to educate the public about minerals. It housed several pieces belonging to the Dutch Royal family, as well as other pieces lent by collectors and other museums.

The theft went undetected for some time, as the museum was closed on Mondays. It was only when museum staff opened on Tuesday morning that the loss was discovered. Despite 24-hour security, camera surveillance of the entire museum, motion detection sensors on the display cases, and reinforced glass, thieves managed to enter and exit the building without leaving a single trace or damaging the displays in any way.To date, no one has been arrested and no sign of the diamonds has ever surfaced. Although the museum eventually put a value of $12 million on the robbery, some of the pieces had historical significance that makes them impossible to value. One of the prized pieces was gifted by King William III to Queen Mary II in the 1600s.
