Tools and Services to Assist End Users

Explore the many Web of Knowledge Web Services today to enhance your library services and researchers’ experience

Dr. Lim Khee HiangPrincipal [email protected]

What are “Web Services?”

• No official definition, but many attempts:

– “… a software system designed to support interoperable

machine-to-machine interaction over a network…”

– “…a system architecture and methodology for providing

distributed software services across a network. You can

think of a web service as akin to a utility, like electricity or

gas. The information (electricity/gas) is there and ready to

be tapped; a client need only have a subscription and use

the correct protocol to plug in.”

Terminology – “Web Service”

• Definition = "a software system designed to support

interoperable machine-to-machine interaction over a network"

• A Web Service enables two computers to talk to each other

over the internet without the need for either human interaction

or a web browser.

• In context of the Web of Science: a Web Service enables

users to query the WoS database and download data.

Some examples include:

– Searching the Web of Science from EndNote or EndNote Web

– Running a federated search, e.g. MetaLib from ExLibris

– Integrating WoS Times Cited counts on a publisher’s website

– Downloading large quantities of data into an institutional

repository

What are the different WOK Web Services available?

• Really Simple Syndication (RSS)

• Web Tools, Gadgets and Widgets

• Federated Search

• Web Services Lite (WOS WS)

• Article Match Retrieval (AMR)

• ResearcherID Upload Web Services

• ResearcherID Download Web Services

6

Terminology – “RSS”

• RSS stands for “Really Simple Syndication” or

sometimes “Rich Site Summary.” It’s a web feed

format used to publish frequently updated content -

- news sites or blogs – in a standard format.

• RSS allows users to pull together web feeds from

disparate sites and view them all in one place with

the aid of the RSS Reader or RSS Aggregator on a

computer or hand-held device.

• A standardized XML file format allows the

information to be published once and viewed by

many different programs.

How does Web of Knowledge use RSS?

Users can create

alerts that are

pushed to their

RSS reader

How can a user subscribe to an RSS feed?

Click “Subscribe”

and an alert will

be pushed to the

RSS Reader

every time the

article is cited.

Web Service example – WoS via EndNote

Type in your query in the EndNote

Online Search interface

EndNote converts the query to the correct

format and submits to the WoS Web Service

http://gateway.isiknowledge.com/gateway/Gateway.cgi?GW

Version=2&SrcAuth=ISIResearchSoft&SrcApp=EndNote&D

estApp=WOS etc.

The Web Service returns

the results in XML format

EndNote interprets the

XML and imports the data

Terminology – “Federated Search”

The basic process of a federated search service:

• Disseminate a search query to multiple services

in a format they can recognise

• Retrieve and interpret the results from the

different sources

• Merge the results to present one list of results

with minimum duplication

Web Services are the technology that makes a

Federated Search work

Examples of Federated Search Systems

• MetaLib from Ex Libris. Often used in conjunction

with their OpenURL server SFX

• Central Search from Serials Solutions

• Muse Solutions from Muse Global

• WebFeat

• Home-grown systems (may require contract

amendment)

• And many others…

– See http://www.loc.gov/catdir/lcpaig/portalproducts.html

How is Federated Search enabled in your library?

• Requests to enable Federated Search can be

submitted by the library through customer technical

support

• Open an e-ticket at

http://scientific.thomsonreuters.com/support

– Select “Web of Knowledge” for product

– Under the “Issue Type” in the dropdown menu, please

select “Acct Admin, Password, ID” and fill in the specific

information

Please have below information ready before send open a ticket for Federated Search

• Your institution name

• Your search system being entitled

• Authentication specs include:

– The IP address of the server that is acting as the client to

WOK web services

– Which databases your institution wishes to access (limited to

institution’s subscription)

Entitlement is usually completed in 24 hours

Web of Science Web Services
