Tool and Technique Stations• Instructions: Read the task card at each station carefully,

and then do the activity. • Reminder: Use our group procedures. You must work

with your group; you will move through the stations together. Only one group may be at a station at a time. You may do the stations in any order.

• You do not have time to socialize with your group. Work seriously and responsibly through the stations. If you reach a point at which you cannot get to another station because they are all in use, you will need to wait quietly and watch until that station becomes available.

Length Station• and calculation of volume

Page 3: Tool and Technique Stations

What’s important when using a ruler?• Measure from the ZERO, not the edge of the ruler.

Page 4: Tool and Technique Stations

How can you find the volume of a box?• Use a ruler to measure length,

width, height. • Multiply l x w x h.

• How can you find volume of some irregularly-shaped solids?

• by displacement of liquid– (the difference)

Volume Station—Graduated Cylinder

Page 6: Tool and Technique Stations

What is this? What is it for? What shape is it? Describe the markings.

•graduated cylinder•measuring volume (in mL)• cylindrical•lines go up gradually from bottom to top

Page 7: Tool and Technique Stations

How do you use it?

• Read at BOTTOM of meniscus (curve).

• (You must move your head.)

What’s different about these graduations?

Page 8: Tool and Technique Stations

width, height. • Multiply l x w x h.

Page 9: Tool and Technique Stations

What’s important before measuring by displacement?

• Most objects should not be placed in a graduated cylinder.

– Help me! I’m stuck!

Mass Station—Triple Beam Balance

Page 11: Tool and Technique Stations

What is this? What is it for?• triple beam balance• measuring mass (in grams)

Page 12: Tool and Technique Stations

How do you use it?--like Goldilocks

• Put all 3 riders at zero.• Put object on the pan.• PAPA—Start with Papa rider. Move Papa too far

to right, then move it one back. • MAMA—Do the same for the Mama rider.• BABY—Slide the Baby rider until it is just right.• Add the 3 measurements (Papa, Mama, Baby)

together to get the mass in grams.

Page 13: Tool and Technique Stations

You try it. Answer in your journal. No machine gun sounds!

A) What is the maximum mass that can be measured with this device? B) What is the minimum mass that can be measured accurately with this device?

C) Mass (weigh) the objects provided: test tube clamp __________ 50 ml beaker __________ 250 ml beaker _____________

Journal Review Station• Return to your table and complete a Peer Review form for last

week’s journal. Do this for each person in your group.Review Form for Science Journal (can be used for peer review OR self-check)

Name of Reviewer (you)____________________________ Today’s Date __________________

Name of Author (student whose work you are checking) ____________________________

Hello, reviewer! You should now have someone’s Science Journal. Your responsibility is to carefully, thoroughly, and meticulously study this person’s work, all the while looking for ways to help the writer improve it. If you fail in this responsibility, you run the risk of turning in INCOMPLETE work, which will bring disgrace to the Raven name. Don’t let this happen to you!
