    Background

The Flinders Link Project involves a 650m extension of

the Tonsley rail line linking the Flinders Medical Centre

and Flinders University to the rail network, including 520

metres of elevated single track over Sturt Road, Laffer’s

    Triangle and Main South Road.

The existing Tonsley station must be removed and a new

Flinders Station will be constructed as part of the project.

There will also be an integrated shared pedestrian/cycle

path adjacent the new rail line. DPTI recognises the

proposed closure of Tonsley Station will alter access to rail

services for a number of Tonsley Line commuters.

As part of the Tonsley Line Review, Square Holes was

commissioned by DPTI, to investigate ways in which the

public transport services and facilities can be enhanced

    for Tonsley line train commuters.

  • 4

    The Mission & Objectives

    Sub-objectives

    1. Understand the accessibility and usage of Tonsley line

    2. Assess the public service needs of commuters who live in the vicinity

    3. Identify primary concerns and expectations with regards to Tonsley line

    4. Identify areas of improvements to enhance the commuter experience

“Exploring the needs and preferences for public transport and connectivity along the Tonsley Line”

  • 5

Methodology & ApproachThe research methodology included an online survey distributed by

DPTI via website, promotion of flyers with link at stations and use of

    existing contact lists.

The overall response rate for the survey was 975 – a statistically valid

response to conduct meaningful and robust analysis at an overall

level with a 95% confidence interval.

Results were analysed and reported at an aggregate level, with

segmentations to compare preferences of key audiences within the

    overall sample.

The research measured the needs and preferences of the public

transport and connectivity along Tonsley line.

This project was carried out in compliance with ISO 20252.

    excursions.

    ▪ Accompany international students to city colleges

    ▪ Because I catch the Gawler train to the city and would have to wait too long for a

    Seaford train after 6pm.

    ▪ Cheap transport.

    ▪ Cheaper to commute via train than pay for parking, and saves time (and the

    environment) too.

    ▪ Drop off to childcare.

    ▪ Events at the Adelaide Royal Show Grounds.

    ▪ Exams at Adelaide Showgrounds.

    ▪ Exercise

    ▪ For fun

    ▪ Get to work in north of town.

    ▪ I belong to a walking group and we occasionally catch the train to the city to walk

    along the river.

    ▪ If the Seaford train is an express to Adelaide, not stopping at Goodwood etc.

    ▪ I'm forced to. The Seaford line a catch coming home from Noarlunga, is express

from Woodlands Park to the city. To get off at Clarence Park, I have to get off the

Seaford line at Woodlands park, and catch the next Tonsley train.

    ▪ Introducing young grandchildren to public transport.

    ▪ Live along the Tonsley line.

    ▪ Looking for work.

    ▪ I want to see the Tonsley train extended to Flinders, etc. because it will connect

essential services. While I may not use, many thousands of other people will and it

will save traffic on roads and enhance people's lives.

    ▪ Residents using train

    ▪ Running errands in town when required. Easiest place to get to via Tonsley train.

    ▪ To catch Adelaide trains.

    ▪ To catch a connecting train in Adelaide.

    ▪ To get Gawler train.

    ▪ To ride the driverless bus.

    ▪ Train is more pleasant / less stressful than catching peak hour Seaford trains.

    ▪ Training with vision impaired students.

    ▪ Westpac centre

    ▪ Westpac Centre

    ▪ Will be living in Tonsley area and commuting from here.

    ▪ Would get if more frequent and closer to things.

    ▪ Better for the environment, community, traffic flow etc.

    ▪ Car pool

    ▪ Car pooling

    ▪ Close to home

    after work.

    ▪ I don't have to cross a main road.

    ▪ I get motion sickness so cannot take buses.

    ▪ I like trains.

    ▪ I like trains a lot.

    ▪ I live 4 houses from the station.

    ▪ I live 4 mins walk away.

    ▪ I live close by.

    ▪ I live in Oak Avenue so it takes me 10 minutes to walk to the station and the service

    is very reliable and efficient.

    ▪ I try to use public transport if it’s after hours.

    ▪ I usually take up two seats due to all the stuff I have to carry for Uni so I don't feel

bad taking up 2 seats as there's always less people on the Tonsley line over the

    Seaford line.

    ▪ It is important to walk and be part of the community for many reasons.

    ▪ It is so close to me so I walk.

    ▪ It's 50m away.

    ▪ It’s literally at the end of my street.

    ▪ It’s so close to my home.

    ▪ Least amount of walking. Best pedestrian access.

    ▪ Less crowded/busy

Q11. Other reasons for choice of travel

    ▪ Less stressful

    ▪ Live down the end of the street.

    ▪ Live very close to Tonsley station.

    ▪ Main reason is only option available.

    ▪ More pleasant than driving.

    ▪ More trains stop at Woodlands Park (every 5-7 minutes).

    ▪ Much quieter train - not as many people on this line.

    ▪ No car parks late morning before 9 at Oaklands so come to Tonsley.

    ▪ No need to park car at destination.

    ▪ No RBT on the train.

    ▪ Not confident driving to the area and parking particularly during the road alterations.

    ▪ Opposite my workplace

    ▪ I can park and go to town and on return go to FMC to visit then home to Seaford.

    ▪ Prefer the train, able to get more work done.

    ▪ Quicker travel time.

    ▪ So I can drink and not worry about the stupid car.

    ▪ Sometimes I do not have a car.

    ▪ Sometimes quicker

    ▪ Station is only a short walk from my house.

    ▪ Taking bicycle on train

    ▪ The station is at the end of my driveway.

    ▪ The station is at the end of the street.

    ▪ The station is right near my house.

    ▪ To avoid car parking in the city.

    ▪ To catch the train to get to work, and back, I live in Tonsley right next to the station.

    ▪ Tonsley train doesn't run late enough or on weekends so I am not able to catch from

Tonsley for work or entertainment. Extended hours and weekend schedules would

increase my use of the Tonsley train and public transportation overall.

    ▪ Train travel is faster than buses; also buses are not disability-friendly with many

drivers being rude and pulling up wide of the curb despite your obvious disability.

    ▪ Travel past elderly relative's residence

    ▪ Varies

    ▪ Very clean and comfortable. Doesn't jolt damaged joints.

    ▪ We take classes from Clovelly Park PS on excursions using the train.

    ▪ Whichever is best on the day to check on relatives.

    ▪ Will drive& park if bringing heavy shopping items home.

    ▪ Works into my other tasks for the day.
