Camerata OrchestraLegend of Dark Mountain - Soon Hee Newbold The beginning is triumphant, with rhythms mostly played in unison, giving a sense of a dutiful march (quest has most likely begun). The piece has a fantastical theme, with mystic sounds weaved into the marches as a melody. The piece itself encapsulates what may be a journey, as a group ventures into the dark mountain in search of something important, encountering all sorts of otherworldly elements, yet still marching on. The ending continues the intense march, showing that the group does not halt even as it faces mythical obstacles. We could tie this into the idea of finding joy by providing a backstory for why the character(s) of our story are looking for something in the first place. Perhaps they heard about an incredibly valuable treasure or a genie, and wish to obtain it for the sake of “joy”, but in truth the joy they seek is artificial.

Philharmonia OrchestraLullaby to the Moom - Brian Balmages The background of the piece follows the idea that the moon is alive, and feels lonely in space looking at the Earth. The moon can sometimes feel proud of us, and even as it is so alone it still manages to shine brightly every night to ensure our safety and comfort. This is a great point where we could introduce the internal strife of the main character. Why is he looking for joy? Perhaps it’s a sense of loneliness or the idea of feeling emotionally lost. The character feels as if he needs something else to bring their self a greater joy, and yet the joy they need is within themselves, just as the moon is alone and yet shines so brightly nonetheless. This way, we can still continue the quest introduced in Legend of Dark Mountain into the second and third piece. Minor Altercations (an altercation being a noisy disagreement, can focus on perhaps the main character disagreeing with his questmates, which may split the group up).

Lyrica OrchestraMinor Altercation - Anthony Granata Immediately opening with a startling forte, this contemporary piece written in the key of D minor promptly introduces its overarching motif consisting of an off-beat and rhythmic conversation between the orchestra. As the piece builds off of the motif, it develops to introduce an array of rhythmic features as new material is presented, including a counterpoint, or a relationship between the voices of the orchestra where they are rhythmically independent while remaining harmonically interdependent. It might seem like each instrument is in conversation with another, or even possibly having a small - or minor - altercation. The music suddenly dissolves into a contrasting middle section, before revealing a grand coda to proudly end the piece.

  • Cambiata OrchestraBeneath the Autumn Sky - Kevin Sluder What accompanies the piece is a relatively calming mood. Though the idea of unison is encouraged throughout, a sense of independence is highlighted particularly. The rhythms involved are as diverse and numerous as the layers of melody and phrasing incorporated through the powerful and heart tugging emotion that heavily encompasses the piece. Specifically incorporated are the dissonants that decorate this work of art, which instigates a sense of tension, yet motion, while it resembles unparalleled distinction despite the unbroken sensation of tranquility and patience. This piece defines a direct contrast compared to Athony Granata’s “Minor Altercations.” The character recovers energy as autumn approaches. Joy is not only engendered from excitement and intense memories, but also calming instances when nothing but the autumn leaves fluttering to the ground are the sole idea of motion. The character recognizes this, and thrives beneath the autumn sky, guided by a sense of independence and choice.

Sinfonietta OrchestraGreater Than - Brian Balmages In his introduction to the piece, Brian Balmages writes, “...the sum of these parts are far greater than any individual set of parts. Greater than… is about inclusion, diversity, acceptance, and the resulting beauty that emerges when all these elements come together.” Commissioned by the National String Project Consortium in 2020, the original orchestration of this piece does indeed highlight the value of community and unison. Starting with just two instruments, the piece gradually adds parts and instruments, each of which are unique. Eventually, this buildup of complexity and layer is followed by an impactful arrival point and a serene melody that flows throughout the rest of the piece.

Sinfonia OrchestraWith Gratitude - Katie O’Hara LaBrie This piece carries a lighthearted and happy tune, beginning with the pizzicato that further progresses into a greater melody that is shared across instruments. The melody of this piece suggests something grand that has finally occurred, drawing away any difficult feelings that may have come up in the past. As the piece transitions from it’s fast and cheery beginning to a more reflective and lyrical passage, it truly illustrates the journey and what is felt throughout the main character as he reflects on past conflicts. The character finally grows to understand, through the journey he has taken, the importance of finding joy even within situations where it may be difficult to. Instead of obtaining the artificial joy he thought existed, he discovers gratitude within the things he has already done. The slower middle point in the piece, which heavily contrasts the end and beginning, could be utilized to show the growth of the character as he contemplates previous events (pieces), and eventually finds gratitude in those as well (learning experiences). The fact that he is finally able to achieve the joy he has been searching for is illustrated through the grand ending that concludes this story.
