Happy New Year to everyone! Our first practice of 2019 was held on

January 4th. Our great dojo moms continued their tradition of preparing us

freshly made mochi and zenzai. Thank you so much!

The first tournament of the year was the SCKF Open Memorial Tourna-

ment in Torrance, which had more than 300 participants. Congratulations to

Cho In Ho for winning kantosho (fighting spirit) award in the senior division.

January was also a busy month for seminars and special practices, with dojo

members attending an international shinpan (referee) seminar in Dallas,

iaido seminar in Idaho, and shido-geiko (black belt training) in San Diego.

We are now collecting federation dues for the 2019 membership year,

Norwalk Kendo Dojo first practice of 2019

which runs from April 1, 2019, through March 30, 2020.

To all you former members out there: please re-up! We’d

love to welcome you back to the Norwalk Dojo family. And

new members are always welcome.

Last year seemed to fly by so quickly and we learned so much in

such a short time that we are only too happy to slow things down a bit

in the beginning of 2019. With our new and continuing members, we

have been able to really focus on the important aspects in the art of

taiko and all the things that make us all better taiko players.

January is always a fun time for Hikari because we get to wel-

come new students to our Beginning Basics Workshop and this year

was no different. After just a few weeks our new students are showing

great progress in the class and with the help of their instructors, Har-

riet and Joyce, we hope they are having fun as well!

In January, our Kuma class brought in new members that were

part of our 2018 Beginning Basics Workshop. The class has been

taking these first few months of 2019 to review form and patterns,

and also to get more comfortable with their stances. All of this is in

preparation for them to put a new spin on one of their beginning piec-

es. It will be difficult but this talented group of students is welcoming

the challenge. We cannot wait to see how it turns out!

Our Sakura class has been busy as well. They have begun learn-

ing a new piece that may be one of the most physically demanding

that they have attempted so far. That, however, only helps drive their

desire to learn and master it. In addition to their new piece, they are

working on learning new skills on all drums to help towards our goal of

becoming a more rounded group. They will continue to work on per-

fecting all of their skills to prepare for future performances.

Speaking of performances, while we have had a quiet beginning

of the year we did return to a few of our favorite events in February.

On February 6 we helped City of Hope in Duarte with their Lunar New

Year celebration, which is always a favorite of ours. Later in the

month, on February 24, we were back with our friends at the Orange

County Japanese American Association to entertain at their annual

New Year event in Anaheim. We are always excited and happy to help

both COH and OCJAA with any of their events.

The next few months have us going back out into the community

to spread the art of taiko, and also staying close to home to help with

Center activities. And as always, we will be having fun while doing it!

The New Year began for the Gakuen students with the tradition-

al ozooni tasting in observance of Oshoogatsu. A special thanks to a

parent, Jason and Saori Enomoto of Dakara Restaurant for preparing

a very special recipe of ozoni. At the January Shinnenkai, the stu-

dents sang and danced before honored guests from the community

center board, students, parents, teachers and other supporters.

Students from all classes participated in the school-wide nenga-

jo contest. The theme for this year is the year of the pig. Every stu-

dent voted for the best one in each age division. Please view their

work on the bulletin board in the hallway. Winners were awarded

prizes at the New Year Party. (photo) Winners were, Maya Enomoto,

Kindergarten; Samantha Munoz, 1st Grade; Miya Bennett, 2nd , Airi

Ochoa, 3rd Grade; Koa Boyle, 4th/5th Grade; Kento Enomoto,

6th/7th Grade; Andrea Murillo, 8th/9th Grade; Ciara Sassone, 10th

and above.

The Gakuen students also participated in the national nengajo

contest and we had four winners from our school. This year 758 stu-

dents from 126 schools participated. From our school, Kiyoshi Matsu-

moto won 2nd place in the most comical category in the Elementary

School Division and Andrea Murillo received honorable mention in the

most comical category in the Middle School Division. In addition, this

year we had a winner, Rachel Sugahara, for the most artistic entry in

the College/University Division. Winners received Amazon gift cards.

Congratulations to all! Please take a look at their artwork at

http://www.aatj.org/nengajo-contest/2019.

On February 2nd, Gakuen students observed Setsubun by eat-

ing the number of beans equal to their age for good luck. Some clas-

ses made ehomaki, a rolled sushi that is said to be lucky if one

eats it without a word facing North, Northeast on Setsubun

day. The kindergarten class made oni masks (see photo) and

everyone listened to a presentation by Nakagawa sensei about

Setsubun. She dressed in the oni costume and was chased

out by all the students.

On March 2nd, the Gakuen celebrated Hinamatsuri (Doll

Festival/Girl’s Day). The students enjoyed viewing the tradi-

Some of the creative nengajos on display

NYS is proud to announce that 8th graders Kristi

Ikemoto and Brooklyn Kame (Blue Starz), Shane Kikuta and Michael Lau (Kings)

have made the Yonsei 26 Basketball team for 2019. Each started with NYS from

Rascals and have continued with their teams since. All four players can be seen

working hard during the NYS Pancake Breakfast and the Center Cultural Festival.

Yonsei Basketball is a non profit organization dedicated to providing a cul-

tural exchange between Southern California youth and their counterparts in Ja-

pan. Kristi, Brooklyn, Shane and Michael were selected based on their academic

excellence and letters of recommendation as well as a personal interview, essay

and basketball skills tryout..

This year’s team will travel to Shibata City, Japan to participate in goodwill

basketball games and home-stay with families to experience Japanese culture

and life. The players need to fundraise to help cover the cost of their trip. You can

help support them (pledges for a Shootathon, buying raffle tickets, Yonsei t-shirts,

and participating/sponsoring the annual Yonsei Golf Tournament. Please contact

Norwalk Dance Club’s “Winter Social” – January 26th, 2019

A belated ”Happy New Year” from Norwalk Dance Club”! It

was really nice to get back to dancing on the fabulous Norwalk

dance floor & seeing our dancing friends. Thank you Yuso, for

providing a list of what different types of music you will be play-

ing. It really helps. Then, there are the “Ladies in the Kitchen”,

who fills our plate with a Cha Shu Bao, salad, pieces of pineapple

& cantalope, & an almond cookie. Thanks, ladies!

Dancing doesn’t stop, though! It was nice to watch Kenny

& Chiemi Y. dancing the Viennese Waltz. Also, it was good to see

several men, like Art H., invite other ladies to dance.

Thanks to all who helped in making our January dance a

nice beginning to 2019. Mark your calendar for our next dance,

So thank you Bob!!

close that check or cash in an envelope with your name, amount enclosed

and its purpose. This helps our treasurer keep his financial records accu-

rate. So our members are reminded to follow his request.

Our speaker meeting on “Keeping Balanced” scheduled for February

26th at 12 noon is fast approaching. It should be a helpful and enlighten-

ing session for us as we seniors are prone to falls and the

problems that arise from it can be difficult. Signups were

taken at the last meeting so that Atlantis Physical Therapy

presenters would have the number of infor-

mation/brochures to distribute.

Seniors should be considering the Pechanga Casino

Day Trip on Tuesday, March 26th. The bus will leave our

Center at 8:30 a.m. for a fun time. Cost is $15 per person

paid in advance to Doris Yarwood. Please call her first at

562-863-9493 ASAP to reserve your place and she will let

you know where to send the check to her with your

Pechanga Casino number or birthdate before March 11th.

A tip of $1 for the bus driver will be collected on trip day.

Others interested may join us but please call Doris as well.

There will be no seniors meeting on this day.

We are saddened to learn that Miyuki Kojo who was

a long time member of our club and also the Dance Club

had recently passed away. She was a special lady. She and

her husband were very active and helpful members of our

Center. Until early last year, she and her daughter attended

our main Center functions. We extend our heartfelt condo-

lences to her family and to Jeanne and Gerald Muraoka.

Call Mary Iwami 562-377-2466 for their contact infor-

mation.
