Education

Product knowledge is a crucial part of the TONI&GUY offer-ing. The range is designed to have a wide appeal and be simplistic to understand and use.

The structure of hair• Hair is made from tightly packed bundles of

the protein keratin. The keratin is formed in the hair follicle, below the surface of the scalp. Each follicle will contain one hair.

• The outer layer of the hair is called the cuticle. It is this part of the hair which is affected by shampoo and conditioners. The cuticle is made from transparent overlapping “scales”. The cuticle protects the hair and keeps the moisture in the cortex.

• The moisture in the cortex helps keep the hair supple and healthy. Hair that has lost this moisture will be dry / brittle and prone to breaking.

• Hair requires lubrication to maintain its health. This function is completed by sebum – an oil naturally secreted from the skin.

• Healthy hair will have smooth undamaged cuticles, encasing a cortex packed with moisture. Light will reflect off the smooth cuticle, making it look sleek and shiny. The moisture in the cortex will make the hair supple and easy to handle. Keeping hair in optimum condition means looking after the cuticle layer.

Maintenance • Every time hair is washed, its structure

alters slightly: the cuticles scales lift and the hair stretches. When shampooing, moisture and the natural oils (sebum) are stripped from the hair along with dirt and grime. The whole stressful process can lead to damage if cuticle scales are not smoothed and moisture restored.

• Conditioning the hair will replace the moisture, flatten the cuticle and help to reduce the potential for damage.

Educate your client: Use a wide toothed comb when hair is wet. Don’t rub or wring hair as the cuticle scales are delicate and can be damaged in this way.

How do shampoos work?

Shampoos have cleansing ingredients that “surround” the dirt and cling to it. When the hair is rinsed the shampoo and dirt are washed away.

How do conditioners work?

Conditioners are designed to smooth and flatten the cuticle scales. The action of flattening the cuticle will help keep the hair healthy (retaining moisture in the cortex).

• “Quats” are the vital component of conditioners. They stick to the damaged areas of hair and encourage the cuticle to lie flat.

Styling products work on the surface of the hair. The ingredients used form temporary bonds on the hair. These bonds hold the style.

What’s the difference between styling and finishing products?

A styling product will be used when creating a style, when hair is wet or damp. A finishing product will be used when the hair has been dried and styled and the style needs to be “finished” or “set” in place.

Cleansers

• Sodium laureth sulfate: Cleansing agent.

• Betaine: Surrounds and gently eases dirt and grime from the hair.

Waxes

• Cetyl alcohol

• Paraffin

• Petrolatum

• Candelila cera will give shaping products their ability to shape, mould and texturise the hair. The hold offered by these products will depend upon the wax itself and the quantities used in the formulation.

Film formers

These ingredients literally form a film on the surface of the hair, which protects it during styling. Film formers dry and then bond with one another, creating the style.

• PVP/VA Copolymer: Create flexibility, allowing the finished style to move naturally without “falling”.

• PVP: Because film formers help to prevent moisture from penetrating the hair, frizziness is reduced.

• Plasticisers: Plasticisers make formulations flexible, ensuring styles are held,yet look natural and not too stiff. Plasticisers ensure that the hairstyle will move naturally yet retain its shape.

• Conditioners / Shine Agents / Moisturisers: These will ensure that the hair is kept in optimum condition during the styling process and afterwards.

• Dimethiconol: Will coat and seal the cuticle, reducing frizziness.

• Cyclomethicone: Will smooth and soften the hair.
