168 YEARS SERVING WESTERN NEW YORK

At YMCA Buffalo Niagara, we believe all people, no matter who they are, deserve an opportunity to reach their full potential. It is our mission to provide meaningful programs and experiences that empower youth to reach their full potential, improve individual and community well-being, and offer support and inspire action throughout Western New York. We pride ourselves on being an inclusive organization that doesn’t turn anyone away due to an inability to pay. In 2019, YMCA Buffalo Niagara served over 110,000 people and provided $1.4 million in financial assistance to more than 3,100 families in our region. Statistics show that one in six children in the United States and nearly 13 percent of people who live in Erie County struggle with food insecurity, meaning families often times don’t know where their next healthy meal will come from. YMCA Buffalo Niagara believes all people should have access to nutritious food, which is why we’re helping to fight hunger and end food insecurity in Western New York through the Saturday Lunch Program at the William-Emslie Family YMCA. The Saturday Lunch Program is a weekly opportunity for individuals and families to enjoy a healthy, plentiful meal together and socialize with others without worrying about how much it will cost. In 2019 the William-Emslie Family YMCA served more than 4,360 meals, the majority of which going to children under the age of 18. Community members say they are grateful for the support this program provides. “Feeding a family of five can really strain the budget so any time we can get a hand for even one meal really helps,” says Patricia Peters.

“The Saturday Lunch Program is extremely beneficial to my family because we feel welcomed and loved within our community. It also helps with my financial situation because we are in need of help,” says Raquel Gibson.

At the Y, we believe everyone should have access to healthy, affordable food. We are committed to ending food insecurity in our community and will continue to do our part to ensure all people have the opportunity to grow strong in body, mind, and spirit.

COMBATING HUNGER & FOOD INSECURITY

CELEBRATING 175 YEARS OF GLOBAL IMPACT

“It was amazing to see how the Y operates in different countries based on the needs of the community.”

Last summer more than a dozen students from across Western New York took the trip of a lifetime to the birthplace of the YMCA – London, England. There they joined nearly 700 of their peers for YMCA 175, a global event designed to give youth a platform to discuss solutions to important social challenges and build cross-cultural relationships. The conference also celebrated an important milestone – the YMCA’s 175th birthday.

Each of the 13 delegates were YMCA participants, volunteers, and/or staff who were nominated for the trip based on their impressive leadership qualities and involvement in their YMCA branch. During their time at YMCA 175, they took part in workshops that focused on social issues that affect communities around the world and learned how the YMCA carries out its mission in the more than 119 countries it serves. “I attended several workshops on topics such as mental health, women’s rights, and inclusiveness,” says Isabel Garcia, a staff member at YMCA Camp Weona who traveled to London. “My goal is to incorporate the lessons I learned to help kids feel more included in camp.”

“It was really inspiring to get to know so many youth leaders from around the world and learn things that we can bring back home with us and use in our own lives,” says Sean Heffley. “It was amazing to see how certain issues are shared across the globe, and how the Y operates in different countries based on the needs of the community. The conferences really helped me gain a new perspective and see things in a new way.”

These 13 change-makers embody all that the Y stands for and we are confident that they will continue to use what they’ve learned in London to make a positive impact in their communities and live out the YMCA’s mission for years to come.

In 2019 the William-Emslie Family YMCA served more than 4,360 meals.

In July 2019, Chuck was in a dark place in his life. Nearly 600 pounds and on antidepressants and other medications, he says he could barely walk without getting tired. “I would constantly eat and sleep, and I was gaining a lot of weight. I was killing myself,” he says.

It was Chuck’s young daughter who he says inspired him to seek help. “She called and said to me, ‘Daddy, can you do me a favor? Can you please work out? Because I don’t want you to die.’” He took that emotional plea to heart and decided to make drastic lifestyle changes and started exercising at the YMCA six days a week. He admits it wasn’t easy in the beginning. “I could barely walk without breathing heavily. I had to use the elevator to get to the Wellness Center,” he says. Fast forward six months later, and you’ll see Chuck doing an hour of cardio, running the track, and swimming laps in the pool without missing a beat. “It’s a way for me to stay focused so I don’t fall back into that dark place. I’m a whole different person now.”

Chuck has become a familiar face at the YMCA and is a source of motivation for both members and staff alike.

“A lot of people say they look up to me,” he says. “But what they don’t know is that they motivate me to be better.” He recalls a specific interaction that he says really touched his heart. “I was working out one day and a young kid came up to me and said, ‘Mr. Chuck, I just wanted to tell you that I’m proud of you’. It really got me emotional. It’s incredible what God is doing for me.”

For Chuck every day at the Y is another chance to share his story. “I’ve been through a lot in my life, but I don’t let it knock me down. I use it as motivation in the gym. I even cry sometimes, because it’s all my past pain coming out.”

Now seven months into his wellness journey, Chuck has lost more than 175 pounds and shows no signs of slowing down. More importantly, he’s gained a new, positive outlook on life. “Sometimes you need a spark to get yourself going, and I thank God that my daughter called me that day. I’m doing this for her,” he says. “Two words: don’t stop. I was in a dark place months ago. Now, I’m going towards the light.”
