T he meditation for the weekend is about "coming to the light through the dark-ness," though if you don't know the

Texts well, it would be hard to figure that out. The first reading is about the vast exile of Jews from their homeland--all over the earth--what looks like a painful punishment is, in reality "God trying to reach out to the Gentile na-tions." The exiles in their new lands will teach them of the One True God. The second read-ing reminds the early Church that God disci-plines those He loves, so our trials need to be "re-framed" as gifts from God, to make us finer-tuned instruments of His will. In the Gospel, someone asks, "So, are most people doomed? Or should we be more optimistic?" Well, we've just seen that God's will is to bring in ALL the nations, so we should be optimis-tic, yet, to be the sort of "instrument" that at-tracts others to God, we should be strict with ourselves--"trying to enter through the narrow gate," even though there are wider gates to the Kingdom--for our example has the power to bring others closer to paths that lead God-ward. So, maybe we should try harder, huh?

-Fr. Bill Axe

I n our readings today we see a “Father” who disci-plines and exhorts his children to learn discipline as this is a tool that will help them in later years.

Don’t you feel like discipline has gone by the wayside sometimes? We are afraid that our children will not like us if we discipline them and yet we know that self discipline is a tool that will aid them in the years to come. So it is with us today. Sticking with something I have committed myself to and seeing it to the end brings satisfaction and pride. We know that God is with us in all we do, let’s give Him something to be proud of!! Commitments to a project, to people, to our Church are all things we need to ask our God to help us with. Let us strive to live up to our commitments and help to make our world a better place.

Have a good week, Sr. Karen

Thank you to all who have made a pledge to Together in Mission. We still have a long way to go to meet our goal. It is very important that these pledges be paid so that our parish will reach and, hopefully, exceed our goal. Once the pledge payments have exceeded our goal, we receive all of the additional funds for use in our parish ministries. We are $17,292.20 short of the goal in pledges; $25,400.20 short in payments if we had the total amount pledged. If you have not already made a pledge, please prayerfully consider making a pledge or one time gift to help the poor parishes in our Archdiocese.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS (RCIA) Becoming a Catholic-Christian is an adventure! Some of us are born into a Catholic family and baptized as infants. For others, the journey to God may take a different route. Each life story, each faith journey is unique. And God is there every step of the way. Where are you in this adventure? Are you looking for a place to belong? Perhaps it is time to begin “INQUIRING” about the Catholic faith. If this is you, please call the Pastoral Office at (323) 935-8127. We would like to hear your story.

August 31 No Meal Labor Day Weekend September 7 We need 200 sandwiches / 100 desserts

"NOBODY CAN DO EVE-RYTHING BUT EVERY-BODY CAN DO SOME-

THING" Thank you 7am choir for the donation of sand-wiches. Our guests loved them. The LeBouef family brought soup, juice, sand-wiches, water and desserts to serve our guests in memory of husband, father and grandfa-ther Irwin. Mr LeBouef was an active member of S.H.A.R.E. always giving and serving . Never a Christmas Day would pass where he would not be at the steam table dishing up meals for our guests. We thank you and are grateful to the LeBouef family for con-tinuing in his foot steps of car-ing, sharing and giving. THANK YOU, THANK

YOU, THANK YOU!!!!!! God bless all of you who helped support our effort to start the children's school year off with the supplies that were needed to encourage success. We knew we had the supplies to fill the backpacks but the backpacks we were short of. God always provides , Mari and her family arrived bearing 25 loaded backpacks, we added to Connie's loaded backpack, we purchased with a huge dis-count 45 backpacks and God send His wingless angels in the form of church family mem-bers to donate enough supplies and backpacks for us to fill and distribute to 108 children. The fish and loaves were truly happening last Friday night when we went to fill the back-packs. For all of you wingless angels and saints who prayed,

donated pennies, supplies, gave anonymously, worked and supported the Hot Dog Sale, came to work on filling and distributing the backpack we thank you for reaching out and making an impact in the lives of children. It is these works and actions that show the chil-dren that you care about them. God is good all the time all the time God is good. The spirit of the Lord is sooooooo alive and thriving in our St. Agatha Church Family. Amen. The Holiday Boutique is Sunday November 17. We are in need of donations of new items to be used at the St. Agatha Chinese Auction Table. Sophia Berkley will be featured reading from and signing the second book in her series of three during the Boutique. No reserved spaces for vendors

are accepted without a com-pleted application and sug-gested full participation fee being received. For inquiries please call 323-935-8127 As you journey this week think about the ways in which God has blessed your life each day. Try and pass these bless-ings on to someone else so that they too can share in being a blessing. If we all would con-sider doing this in our church and community look at what we can accomplish. We can stimulate people thinking and caring about one another not judging and turning away but coming together and loving and serving side by side just because we care.,, Thank you for your con-tinuous support.

Blessings, The S.H.A.R.E. Ministry

bien visible y a color.

UUPP--TOTO--DATEDATE PHOTOPHOTO OFOF YOURYOUR CHILDCHILD One of the most important tools for law enforcement to use in the case of a missing child is an up-to-date, good-quality photograph. The photograph should be a recent, head-and-shoulders color photograph of the child in which the face is clearly seen. It should be of “school-portrait” qual-ity, and the background should be plain or solid so it does not distract from the subject. When possible, the photograph should be in a digitized form, and available on a compact disk (CD), as opposed to just a hard copy. This minimizes the time necessary to scan, resize, and make color corrects before dis-seminating it to law enforcement. The photograph should be updated at least every six months for children 6 years of age or younger and then once a year, or when a child's appearance changes.

Immediate Action Needed! Help us stop SB 131 (Beall)! Current law treats victims of child sexual abuse the same, regardless of where the abuse took place and regardless of whether the abuser worked for a public school, a private school or a religious organization.

A controversial bill winding its way through the state Legislature would change all that. Under SB 131, victims who were abused by employees or volunteers of private or non-profit organizations would be able to sue those organizations

even if the statute of limitations was over. Victims who may have been abused in public schools or by government workers, on the other hand, get nothing. As the bill is currently drafted, not only are they prevented from suing the

school, they can’t even sue the actual perpetrator who committed the abuse. The California Catholic Conference opposes SB 131, and opposes discrimination against victims and private em-ployers. SB 131 is also opposed by a growing coalition of that includes private schools and universities, the Police Ac-

tivity League, the California YMCA/YWCA, USA Swim, USA Gymnastics, other religious groups and the La Raza Roundtable de California. Visit www.cacatholic.org for more information and click “ACT NOW” for an email that

you can send to your Assembly Member.
