Mission Statement We, the members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, as a caring Christian community, help one another to live, to nurture, and to celebrate God’s gifts. We encourage others on their faith journeys to join us in giving witness to our Catholic faith and to grow as disciples. We celebrate the sacraments and receive the gift of grace to strengthen our faith and to enrich our relationships with Christ and his Church. We gather together to pray, to worship, to give thanks, to petition, to seek comfort, to share joys and sorrows, and to experience God’s love, joy, and peace.

Infant Baptism Preparation

The first step for parents wishing to have an infant child baptized at Sacred Heart is to attend a Baptism prep ses-

sion. At the session parents discuss the responsibility involved in having a child baptized and share ideas on living out their commitment to raise their children in the Catholic faith. The next Baptism Preparation Session will be on Thursday, January 4th at 6:30 p.m. in the adult room in the McCann Center. For more information, or to register, please contact Luke Gregory, our Director of Lifelong Faith Formation in the Faith Formation office.

New Year’s Day The Solemnity

of Mary, Mother of God

January first is the day on which we celebrate the Blessed Mother under the title of Mother of God. Since that day falls on a Monday in 2018, it is not a holyday of obligation for 2018 only. Regardless, Mass will be celebrated at Immaculate Conception Church in Colfax on Sunday, December 31, at 4:00 p.m. Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart in New-ton on Monday, January 1at 9:00 a.m. Even though the faithful do not have an obligation to go, attend-ing Mass honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary as Mother of God is a good and admirable thing to do.

Monthly Envelopes For those parishioners who use the monthly tithing envelopes, the packets for 2018 are available to pick up in the Gathering Space.

2018 Calendars The 2018 Religious calendars are now available. Thanks to the calendar adver-tisers who have supported this yearly venture for some time:Clemon-Maki In-surance, Edward Jones, The Floor Store, and Maxim Advertising.

Who am I? Why am I here?

We all grapple with these

questions from time to

time. When you come to

Mass this Christmas, you’ll receive a special gift

from our parish that will help you find the an-

swers so you can start living the amazing life

God created you to live.

The great celebration of the Nativity of our Lord is near. This Sunday we begin the celebration with the Christmas Eve Masses. Please allow Christ to be the focus of your Christmas celebration. Without the gift of Jesus where would we be? The Nativity cele-brates the beginning of our redemption. We are re-cipients of that great gift. Live your life as a great beneficiary of Christ’s saving deeds, and live so as to reveal to others the wondrous presence of Christ in your life.

“The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.” – Luke 1:35

Our Lady, from the moment of her conception, was overshadowed by the Holy Spirit. Her trust in the Holy Spirit models for us what our lives can look like when we say “yes” to God’s will and fully give ourselves over to the actions of the Spirit of God. Mary’s fiat led her to the cross, the empty tomb and ultimately the upper room where she was once again overshadowed by the Holy Spirit. If we have the courage, as Mary did, to say yes to God’s Spirit, to surrender our will to his, we too will experience the power of the Most High overshadowing us. On Wednesday, January 3 from 6:00 – 7:00 pm in the church, we will be having our fourth faith enrichment ses-sion after the 5:15 pm parish wide meal. We will be continuing with the Wild Goose series on the Holy Spirit, and our fourth session will be on The Spirit and Our Lady. All parishioners are welcome whether or not you have a child in faith formation, and childcare will be provided for ages 1-4! We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday, January 3!

“Be it done unto me according to your word.” Docile obedience to the Lord’s will is the fruit of humble prayer. If God is inviting you to a deeper consecration as a priest, deacon, brother or sister, call Fr. Thom Hennen, diocesan vocations director at 563-324-1911, or write: HennenT@ diodav.org.

Monthly Adoration Hour for the

Ladies of the Parish We are continuing our once-a-month Saturday morning hour

of Adoration and prayer for all the ladies of the parish. During this hour of Eucharistic Adoration, we pray a ro-sary for an end to abortion, euthanasia, human trafficking, genocide, and all other forms of abuse and exploitation of people throughout the world. We also pray a Chaplet of Divine Mercy in reparation for our sins and the sins of the world. We invite you all to join us in this time of spiritual combat against the powers of darkness. It is a marvelous opportunity to grow closer to God and to build up His kingdom on earth. We will meet on the first Saturday of the month form 7:00 to 8:00 A.M. in the daily Mass chapel. If we have enough ladies, we will move to the main church. Our next session will be Saturday, January 6. Bring your rosaries, and we look forward to seeing you there.

Shredding the Doubts: Faith Formation Roundtable

All are invited to join the diocesan Office of Faith Formation for a Roundtable dis-cussion in which we will be “Shredding the

Doubts” about Faith Formation. Beginning with a premise of encounter and discipleship, we will gather to hear from each other about innovations and hopes for faith formation for all ages in our parishes. The discussions will be held on Friday, January 12, 2018 and Saturday, January 13, 2018 from 9AM-1PM, with lunch to follow. The event is lo-cated at either St. Mary, Oskaloosa or SS Mary and Mathias, Muscatine. Registration is required by Janu-ary 8, 2018. A Freewill Offering will be collected for lunch. For more information visit http://www.davenportdiocese.org/shred or contact Rosina Hendrickson (563-888-4244 or [email protected]).

Year-end Giving As the end of the calendar year approaches this may be a good time for you to consult with your financial advisor and/or tax preparer, as you may find that a tax deductable contribution to the church may lessen your federal tax burden. Do-nations to the church for calendar year will be accepted through December 31, 2017. Anything after that date will be considered as a 2018 dona-tion.

A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT A thought or two on stewardship in the Sunday readings

In today’s Gospel reading we hear proclaimed the story of the Annunciation, when the angel of the Lord announced to Mary that she would give birth to Christ through the intercession of the Holy Spirit. Mary allowed God’s messenger to speak to her. She was attentive, not afraid to enter into a dialogue, then unconditionally obedient. Mary’s acceptance of this mystery is a stewardship model for us. Good stewards remain open to the incursions of divine life into the normal course of their daily lives. How open are we to the promptings of the Holy Spirit in our own lives? What might we do this last week of Advent to be more attentive to the Lord?

Thank so much to Liz Hammerly and her 5th graders for the precious "Light of Christ" gift I re-ceived. It is certainly a project which shows the dedica-tion of the students as it is quite an intricate design and really beautiful. My Christmas will be "lighter" because of it.

An antiphon in the Christian breviary

states, “The angel Gabriel was sent to the

Virgin Mary, who was engaged to be mar-

ried to Joseph” (December 20). Was she mar-

ried or not when Jesus was conceived?

Much of the confu-sion is due to what consti-tuted marriage at the time of Jesus. Mary was betrothed to Joseph when she was found to be pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit. During the usual be-trothal period of a year, the woman remained with her fam-ily. However, the bond between the couple was already as permanent as marriage. That’s why Mary was legally known as Joseph’s wife, even though they didn’t yet live together or have all the rights belonging to a husband and wife. In fact, the arrangement during betrothal was so binding that it could only be terminated in divorce. Moreover, in that patriarchal society, a betrothed woman who had sexual relations with anyone other than her husband was accused of adultery. Had Joseph ended this betrothal in disgrace, Mary would have been deprived of marriage for the rest of her life and dependent on her extended family upon her father’s death. But Joseph was an upright man who intended to divorce her quietly without publicly stating the reason, in order to spare Mary and her family’s reputation. That’s when an angel appeared to him in a dream and told him to have no fear about taking Mary as his wife, for the Child was conceived by the Holy Spirit (Matthew 1:20).

A Deeper Vi-

sion: The Catholic In-

tellectual Tradition in

the Twentieth Cen-

tury by Robert Royal is a great gift to this gen-eration of Catholics. In this very large (616 page) volume, Royal presents a comprehensive and very balanced assessment of notable Catholic per-sons of the last century . He evaluates the works of leading figures, in the humanities such as G.K. Chesterton, Evelyn Waugh, Charles Peguy, Picasso, and theologians/philosophers such as Karl Rahner, Jacque Maritan, John Henry Newman, and scrip-tures scholars such as Joseph Ratzinger. One very valuable section of the book covers the theories and philosophies the major figures who shaped Vatican Coun-cil II. The thoroughness with which Dr. Royal presents his material is well worth the time spent reading it. This book will no doubt be referred to by persons for many years to come. The Library is open after weekend Masses or Monday, Tuesday, & Friday morn-ings. Contact Kay Fisher at 792-2863.

Solutions to last week’s Activity Page

King David wants to build God a home! He had first built his own palace and afterward realized that he hadn’t built a space for God—a place of worship and family communion. It is admirable that David wants to give back, but do we have to take care of God or, rather, is it God who cares for us? Obviously, God doesn’t need David to build him a house. The whole world is his. Didn’t God build up David all along, bring-ing him to a place where he might consider offering God some-thing in return? It is like children who want to give their parents a gift. First they ask a parent for money or a gift idea. On their own, they cannot give. God turns the tables on David, saying that God will build David a house—an everlasting lineage to rule over the people. God will build something much bigger than anything David had ever dreamt of. He will build David a kingdom that will become a nation and give birth to a worldwide universal Church.

In the painting, Mary stands in front of an or-

nate house. She stands like us, at the entrance, welcoming God’s com-ing. It was her yes that allowed the master builder to enter into our world to begin building this house, which be-came a Church. Like Mary, we await Jesus. With her, let us say yes to him, cele-brating the one who has established that house where we celebrate to-day! —Fr. Mark Haydu, LC
