THE CLERGY LETTER

What, from your experience, would you most like to pass on to the next generation?

Would it be hard learned lessons about what not to do, in the hope of saving others

from the same heartache? Or would it be practical wisdom for relationships and a

better life?

We would almost certainly want to share those things that are most precious to us so

that they are not forgotten but rather a source of blessing to others.

“We will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, his power and

the wonders he has done.” Psalm 78:4

This is what I, from my experience, desire above all else to pass on to those around

me.

In my day to day ministry I am privileged to have opportunities to share how much

God has done with all kinds of people in all sorts of circumstances.

In the summer, dozens of energetic, enthusiastic children gather at St John’s Church

in Pewsey for our annual Holiday Club. We have fun together finding out more about

God’s purposes for us - whether as pirates searching for the greatest treasure or as

secret agents uncovering more about God’s incredible rescue mission plan for his

people. This year our setting is going to be an inventor’s workshop where we will be

making mega discoveries about God’s amazing love for us (see the notice on page

10).

It is truly inspiring to think that God gave his only Son so that whoever believes in

him may not perish but have eternal life. That really is good news to pass on.

Revd Mark Windsor From the Registers Funerals: May they rest in Peace.

Sidney (Sonny) Stephen Perry, formerly of Stanton St Bernard, died 13th April. Funeral Service on Friday 5

th May at West Wilts Crematorium, Semington followed by a

Thanksgiving Service at All Saints, Stanton St Bernard. Christopher Thomas Yates, formerly of Milton Lilbourne, died 19th April. Funeral Service on 8th May at West Wilts Crematorium. Hilda Mabel Irene Choules died 3rd May. Funeral Service on 18th May at Kingsdown Crematorium followed by a Memorial Service at Holy Trinity Church, Easton Royal.

Weddings:

Richard Phillips and Yvette Dawson on 6th May at Alton Barnes Mary Cox and Robert McDonald on 13 May at Upavon Baptisms:

Philippa Mary Maitland on 30th April at Woodborough Phlox and Lorcan Garnett on 7th May at Oare Confirmation on Sunday 30th April at St James, North Newnton:

Nedd Callis-Nicholls; Menzies (Ming) Campbell; Joseph Heber-Percy; ;Bethany Larkey; Archie Mackinnon; Harry Marshall; Lupita Newman; George Popperwell; Konrad Szkudlarek; Katie Wilson.

You are warmly invited to

THE HOLY TRINITY

A mystery at the heart of a puzzle wrapped up in an enigma, The Holy Trinity is Christian Theology's equivalent of quantum physics: baffling, beautiful, and the key to literally everything.

As we approach Trinity Sunday, this event is an opportunity to explore one of the most fascinating, challenging, and troubling Christian doctrines. Impenetrable

mystery or intimate reality? Join us for an evening of talks and discussion.

Wednesday 7th June 7.30pm St John the Baptist Church, Pewsey

For more information, please contact:

Poetry for June! Come along to discuss poetry on Mondays 5th and 19th of June

7-8pm in The Rectory, Pewsey. On the 5th we will take a Pentecost theme.

This is preceded for those who wish by Compline (an evening service with silence and prayer) in St John's Church at 6.30pm.

ST MARY’S PLANT SALE The church social committee would like to thank everyone who helped, donated plants and bought plants at our plant sale in the village hall on Saturday May 13th. It was a resounding success and raised just over £300 for the church. Much socialising over bacon butties and cups of tea was to be had as well. We intend to hold it again next year so think of our sale when planting seeds next spring!

ST MARY’S CONCERT We had a very successful concert in Upavon church on May 6th, with a combination of the Pewsey Belles and a male choir called the Sarsen Songmen. The audience seemed to enjoy themselves, joined in several songs, and drank lots of wine, so that they then had to be dragged back to their seats for the second half. We raised nearly £300 for St. Mary's church, and are very grateful to all the singers and all the helpers. Daisy Daisy certainly raised the roof when sung by the combined choirs and the audience.

GOOD FRIDAY WALK OF WITNESS Fifty-one folk gathered at the church of Charlton St Peter, plus numerous well-behaved dogs, to hear the beginning of The Passion story played by members of the group, to sing and to pray. Members of the group took turns in carrying a cross as they made their way to St Matthew's, Rushall, for the second part of The Passion story, to sing and to pray. The walk continued to St Mary's, Upavon, where the final part of The Passion was heard. The weather was fair all afternoon which was rounded off with a gathering in The Ship Inn for refreshments kindly donated by the landlady

WILTSHIRE AIR AMBULANCE

CAN YOU HELP US TO BUILD A BETTER FUTURE FOR YOUR AIR AMBULANCE?

Wiltshire Air Ambulance has been saving lives for over 27 years and work has begun on our new airbase at Semington, near Melksham. The new airbase will bring together our helicopter, aircrew and charity team onto one site for the first time. The central location of our new airbase will mean our helicopter will be able to reach all parts of Wiltshire within 11 minutes, as it currently does now from its base in Devizes. Our fundraising appeal for the new airbase has got off to a flying start, but we still need to raise just under £1 million to complete the building and equipping of it. Can you help us raise the vital funds for our Airbase Appeal? There are lots of different ways you can get involved, such as holding a cake sale, organising a challenge event or uploading a photo for our helicopter mosaic. We also have fun ways for schools and businesses to get onboard and support our appeal. Find our more by visiting our special website www.wiltshireairbaseappeal.co.uk , call the Charity Team office on 01380 739453 or email [email protected] Registered charity number: 1144097

Any resident of the village wishing to raise a matter with the Parish Council should, in the first instance, contact the Parish Clerk, Jon Mulroy, 24 High Street, Upavon, tel. 01980 630059 or mobile - 07740 178891, email: [email protected] (or he can be contacted through the Parish website) at least 48 hours before a meeting in order that a considered response may be made. Salisbury Plain training area information will henceforth be available on the Parish Council notice board, or on the website:www.upavonpc.co.uk

Summer Visitors

House Martins These lovely migrant birds fly from Africa to nest in the British

Isles, many come to our area. Please do not remove their mud nests from the

eaves of houses. The birds really don’t cause too much mess and they get very

distressed if all their hard work is destroyed. If they cannot raise their broods

then another species will be endangered.

Swallows always return to their old nest sites. Please leave accesses open for

them. If, for security, accesses have to be shut, swallows will fly through small

openings to reach their nesting sites.

Swifts Their centuries old nesting sites are fast disappearing. They require an

access ‘tunnel’ at least 18 inches long with a small entrance hole. Established sites

in Upavon are in the Church and under the eaves of Gisburne House. There may be

others – please do not block the tunnels. Swifts spend as much as nine months on

the wing and are known to nap whilst flying!

Should you require any advice about these birds or how to obtain artificial nesting

boxes, please telephone The Wiltshire Wildlife Trust 01380 725670.
