DESCRIPTION
ÂTRANSCRIPT
We began covering Columbus in 1828, the
same year our city was founded. Back then,
we were a weekly newspaper called the
Columbus Enquirer. Nearly two centuries and two Pulitzer Prizes
later, you know us as the Ledger-Enquirer. We are still proud to call
Columbus home. It’s a true honor to chronicle this ongoing journey from
sleepy mill town to tech-savvy metropolitan hub of arts, entertainment,
outdoor adventure and commerce.
As publisher of the Ledger-Enquirer, I’m proud to be partnering with the city’s
most influential corporate entities, business leaders and government officials
to make Columbus and the Chattahoochee Valley an even better place to
live, work and play.
We’re calling this venture Together 2016. The campaign has two components.
Through an extensive multi-media campaign, our 23 partners will tell you
their stories; stories about why international companies choose to call
Columbus home; how homegrown businesses find success; why
foundations and non-profits say residents value the true meaning of servant
leadership; why those partners find Columbus a good place
to live and do business. The second part of this campaign
involves investing in projects that will make this community
even better. You’ll find out more about those projects as the
campaign unfolds.
We believe Columbus is one of the most generous cities in America. Each
time our citizens are called upon to do something for the greater good, to
realize the potential of our community, the people here never fail to step up.
Public-private partnerships have changed the face of Columbus. Together
2016 is, in a way, like those public-private partnerships of the past, but this
time, instead of recasting the image of our city’s face, we are looking to
rekindle the fire in its heart.
So, where to begin? That’s where you come in. Have a suggestion for a
project? Hatching the next big idea? Feel strongly about issues affecting your
neighborhood? See something we can accomplish that will make Columbus
a better place? Let’s make it happen … Together.

This special magazine serves as the official launch of a public-private partnership we’re calling Together 2016. The campaign
brings together 23 community partners — businesses, universities, non-profits and community organizations — in a year-
long effort to remind us of what a great place this is to live and work.
We hope you have seen and enjoyed getting a glimpse of the campaign in the last few weeks through a series of “teaser”
ads which have appeared in the Ledger-Enquirer, Her Magazine, The Bayonet and Saber, The Big To Do, online
and through social media. Our intent with these fun, creative messages was to arouse your curiosity
about our campaign and what we hope to accomplish in the coming year.
We live in a great community, full of entrepreneurial spirit, friendly, generous people and wonderful
venues and attractions. Opportunity surrounds us and it is up to each of us to work together, to not
only maximize the opportunities, but to help support and create them as well.

Together 2016 has two components. The first is a one-year multimedia campaign utilizing both digital and
traditional media to generate excitement around Together 2016 and to showcase the many great aspects of
our city. Marquette Mcrae McKnight will be leading our Together 2016 team as Project Manager. Marquette is
the President of Media Marketing … and More!, a local public relations firm. naartjie Multimedia, led by bill becker,
developed all the design elements for this media campaign. The second phase of Together 2016 is the creation of
a fund that will be used to support community projects that make Columbus a better place to live and work. Project
ideas will be solicited from the community and selected by the partners of Together 2016.
How can you help write the next chapter? We invite every member of the community to participate. you can start by visiting buildingabettercolumbus.com and sharing
your suggestions for worthwhile projects. Perhaps you have an idea to help beautify the city or add to the overall quality of life.
is there some new idea that we really should do? Whatever your project ideas are, we want to hear from you.
as Together 2016 collects ideas for the projects, we will reach out to the community to help make the projects a reality.
We encourage you to be involved in the process by sharing your ideas and inviting your friends and family to participate.
as projects are implemented through this campaign, we hope every citizen in our community will feel a strong sense of ownership
and personal satisfaction that once again, we are building a better Columbus. Service for the common good can inspire a fresh
start, give someone a new beginning or reenergize an entire community. The intent of Together 2016 is to generate a lasting
impact by doing good. Connecting and tapping into shared community passions and providing a helping hand to create meaningful
opportunities will strengthen individuals and our community.
We will build an even better Columbus, together.

“I’ve learned a number of lessons from the incredible public-private partnership
experiences in Columbus. For example: There is no limit to what we can do if we
don’t care who gets the credit, and when we listen and develop a common vision,
everyone owns it. I’m proud of what our city is accomplishing, but more importantly,
I’m glad that its people share a sense of ownership for the great things that are
happening here. I believe each person has the same needs that I do — a need for
meaning in their lives, a need to feel that they are part of building a better world.”

aflac
Like many of the most successful companies in the world, aflac
started out as a local business. The most enduring brands continue
to be nurtured by their local roots in some meaningful way. as a
global brand, we manage an ambitious vision for success, but we never
lose sight of the fact that our success is connected to the communities
we serve.
The commitment to corporate citizenship starts at the top, and extends
throughout the workforce, making philanthropy and volunteerism an
essential part of our corporate culture. Community connections —
especially the connections in the Columbus community — create stronger,
healthier places for our customers and associates to work and live. Those
connections are our most valuable and effective brand asset.

the next generation of engineers, scientists and manufacturers.
We’re also shaping the communities of the future, empowering our
employees across the globe and here in Columbus to positively impact
their communities. Our employees generously volunteer their time, talent
and expertise to nurture a strong presence within this community.
The people of Columbus embrace that vision and are a partner in our
success. We’re grateful to live and work in a place with such a strong
sense of community.

in the early 1990s, the Columbus Water Works, along with other
community partners, took the opportunity to not only improve our
river water quality, but to also create a recreational and aesthetic
landmark for Columbus. by rolling the consolidation of the effort into
other community improvements and garnering enthusiastic community
support, the development of the Columbus riverwalk was set.
The Columbus Water Works continues that work as we promote a
legacy of responsible economic and environmental stewardship. We are
dedicated to providing outstanding and innovative utility services,
protecting the environment and excelling in service to our community.
Today, the riverwalk serves as tangible proof of creative problem solving
and collaboration when the people of Columbus work together.
Columbus is our home. in fact, the TSyS riverfront Campus, our
international headquarters, is located directly on the banks of
the beautiful Chattahoochee. So we feel a strong responsibility
to our team members and customers to ensure that Columbus is a great
place to live and to do business.
To compete for the best talent and provide a great quality of life for our
team members, we invest in building our community and making it a
stronger place. Quality hospitals, outstanding schools and universities,
world-class museums, superb theater and music, the riverwalk, whitewater
and safe, vibrant neighborhoods are all part of making Columbus a place
where people want to live — a place we can all call home.
The Chattahoochee Riverwalk is one of the largest and most successful riverwalks in the nation.
“I moved to Columbus in 1994. Shortly thereafter, the world, too,
discovered Columbus, when the 1996 Olympic Softball Competition was
held here. There was potential everywhere. Public-private partnerships
prepared to harness that potential and a passionate citizenry was primed
to implement and effect real change in our city. That has been one of the
most rewarding aspects of serving as mayor – listening to people’s ideas
and watching as local businesses buy in to make those ideas a reality.
Columbus is a generous city largely because Columbus-based companies
are different. They are more than global brands and successful businesses.
They recognize themselves to be part of the heartbeat of this community.
Our Columbus businesses see that, indeed, we are all connected. That is just how it is in Columbus.
We are engaged. We are connected. And, we are all in, all the time. That is what makes Columbus,
Georgia an exceptional city. I saw it when I moved here 22 years ago. I see it still today.”

“More often than not, a river acts as a boundary, a dividing line. That’s not
the case here in the Chattahoochee Valley though. We are not two
communities split apart by the rapids, but rather one community brought
together by the common goal to improve the quality of life for our fellow
citizens. The infrastructure that has been built up in the wake of riverfront
development has stimulated economic growth, created jobs that are wholly
new to our area, and generated tax revenue that filters right back into the community. Anything is possible
when engaged leaders use creative, common sense approaches to invest in the people of our community.”

The most exciting thing about living in the tri-city area right now
is that when you talk about something “taking off ” – whether it’s
riverfront development, urban revitalization or tourism – we are
no longer talking in terms of the next decade, but in the next few years.
That’s why Troy has a Center for Water resource economics and offers
a bachelor’s degree in hospitality, sports and tourism management.
it is truly exciting to be in this community. i look out the window
everyday, across the river, at Columbus. it’s beautiful. i know the folks at
TSyS look out their windows over here at us and think the same thing.
The river that makes both sides beautiful brings us together. it’s a very
good thing that we can now inspire one another.

The human body is a complex system. When even the smallest
component fails, the whole system can fall out of sync. On the other
hand, when the body is healthy, it can perform miraculous feats.
Our community behaves the same way. it is a complex system. it
crosses rivers, state and county lines. it is diverse. it thrives when
everyone pulls together.

Our team members are incredible people who not only work hard
to serve their customers, but who are also dedicated to creating
a lasting and positive impact on this community. We always
encourage our team members to contribute to their local communities —
and they find plenty of opportunities to do so. but employee volunteering
isn’t purely giving to others. it helps our team gain new experiences and
skills. it gives them a deeper understanding of community needs.
by helping people and organizations with their most pressing challenges,
we can provide help that they may not otherwise access. Our team
members are able to demonstrate servant leadership, broaden their
experience and develop a deeper understanding of our community. Most
importantly, they make a real difference. it’s a win-win for everyone.
Our community has experienced a period of rapid expansion
over the last 20 years. The changes can be seen in the number
and types of businesses created, the neighborhoods we live in
and the schools we attend, even the entertainment and recreational
activities we enjoy. We are a more active community. We ride bikes on
the riverwalk and on rails to Trails. We run and walk in our
neighborhoods. We shop at Market Days. We enjoy music in uptown.
We support our friends in their efforts to build our community through
runs and walks for charitable organizations. We encourage each other
to live healthier lifestyles. We are proud of the development of
whitewater. We applaud our neighbors in Phenix City for their
development of the riverfront. and we love and support Fort benning.
a lot of things may change in our community, but the generous and caring
heart of our community for each other remains the same.
“The relationship between a military base and its neighbor-city is based on a
number of factors such as the size of the base, the metropolitan population, the
schools, housing, civilian employment opportunities, and other infrastructure
necessary to support non-military family members. But the most important factor
is mutual respect. The relationship between Fort Benning and Columbus is, in a
word, symbiotic. What is good for one, is good for both. That’s why the Fort
Benning Gateway and the National Infantry Museum and Soldier Center are such
points of pride for our troops — soldiers, civilians and all the retirees that call
Columbus their home. It shows us your pride in what we do. As we enter Fort
Benning and pass beneath the flags, the fountains and the eagles on their columns; as we pass the majestic
museum that houses all our infantry history — we are reminded that we are valued, what we do matters
and the sacrifices we make for this beautiful country of ours are honored and remembered.”

was in tune, blending and balancing with the rest of the ensemble in order to
