My Motivation

The wool from Regia I liked, so I bought this.

Martine Paulauskas pattern has published on her blog "Strickloft" (http://www.strickloft.kunst-

loft.de/) derived from an old knitting pattern book. This pattern is from the book "knitting pattern

stripe in school" of 1894. According to this Martine knits all patterns, she has written the patterns in

today's knitting "language" and photos taken of her knitted pieces. In two PDF documents, you can

get the “pique” and the lace pattern of Martine.

These patterns have simply fascinated me. Thus began my journey through the old knitting patterns.

Viewing the wool it is often very quickly clear to me to whom this piece of knitting is to knit. So it was

a pair of socks for my husband.

A big thanks to Martine for her wonderful work, thus enriching the "old knitting books" my knitting

Challenges

• Toe-up sock knitting with heel flap and gusset

Prerequisites

I assume that knit, purl, bind-off, cables, work short rows, sewn threads, cast-on and cast-on during

knitting. These techniques I am using here, but I will not describe them.

I knit as a "right-handed”, my knitting stitches are going from left to right. I use the "continental"

method of knitting, wool thread running through my left index finger.

Preparation

There are two each 50 gram skeins. I knit both socks in parallel, so I always have a pair ready.

Abbreviations

BO – bind-off stitches

CO – cast-on stitches

k – knit

kfb – knit front and back (knit in the front and back of the next stitch)

pfb – purl front and back (purl in the front and back of the next stitch)

p – purl

ssk – slip slip knit, slip one stitch, as you knit it, then slip the next stitch. Insert the left needle into the

front loops of the slipped stitches and knit them together from this position, through the back loops.

st – stitch or stitches

w&t – wrap and turn.

The start of the sock – the knit will be born

I knit the socks round.

Toe

1. R: cast on in color B (16 instep / 16 sole) using. „Magic Cast-on“ by Judy Becker or “figure-eight” or

invisible cast on, or a closed cast on you know.

2. R: k (16 instep / 16 sole) in rounds

3. R: kfb, k until the second to last stitch, kfb, k 1(1 time instep and 1 time sole)

4. R: k (instep / sole)

R3 and R4 - 8 times, the number of stitches for sole is 32 and for the instep 32

Feet

The pattern at the top of the foot I have worked asymmetric. If you do not want like this just knit two

right or two left socks.

For the right feet:

(instep (k 18, Chart A, k 2) / sole (k 32)) work 56 round

For the left feet:

(instep (k 2, Chart A, k 18) / sole (k 32)) work 56 round

Create the gusset

I use to increase the stitches kfb. The first stitch and the second to last stitch of sole are worked as

kfb, every 3. Round – 12 times. All the other stitches are knitted.

Instep stitches are working in pattern.

After the last increasing round, knit two rounds without stitch increasing,

knit until you stay in the middle of the sole stitches and stop here, start the heel

Heel (Turn the heel and heel flap)

Turn the heel

The instep stitches goes sleeping and I knit only the sole stitches, for a while.

Create the short row rounding on the sole site the heel.

H1R: k 9, kfb, k 1, w&t

H2R: slip the w&t stitch, p 21, pfb, p 1, w&t

Heel flap

F1R: k 19 (stitch 9, 12, 15 and 19 are the wrapped stitches), ssk (stitch 21 with wrap!), turn work

F2R: sl 1, p 30 (stitch 20, 23, 26 and 29 are the wrapped stitches), p2tog (stitch 32 with wrap!), turn

work

F3R: sl1, k 31, ssk, turn work

F4R: sl1. p 31, p2tog, turn work

F3R and F4R – 15 times repeat

The heel flap is done! Now I knit the leg.

Leg

To reduce holes between the heel flap and the top of the foot, simply take here stitch from the cross

stitch thread and remove those stitches again a few laps later.

(instep stitches work in pattern / sole k32) 10.5 (end after round 3)times Chart A

If you knit less than pattern then I writ, the sock will be shorter. If you knit more patterns, the sock

will be higher. But have a look through your yarn!!!

Cuff

B1 R: instep (k 2, p 2) 16 times, sole (k 2, p 2) 16 times

This round knit 16 times.

The description is how I knit the cuff. You can knit it as you like.

My favorite technic for bind-off is the “Russian bind-off”, I explain my way in the appendix of this

document. If the bind-off is stretchy it is much easier to put the sock on and there is nothing fix

around the leg.

The first sock is done, and what is about the second?

Weave the end of the yarn.

After I finished my socks, they get a warm bath in a washbasin or washing machine with a soft wool

washing agent. After this they have to dry in lying position.

Charts

Chart A

based on "Alte deutsche Pique-Muster" by Martine Paulauskas (http://www.strickloft.kunst-loft.de/),

pattern 33 on page 73):

All even rounds as they appear.

Thus, the pattern is 12 stitches wide and 6 high rounds.

Bind-off

My way, based on the ”Russian-bind-off”

Knit two stitches as they have to be knitted, now insert front side the left needle into the two stitches

on the right needle and knit these two stitches through the back loops. On right needle is one stitch.

* Knit the next stitch from left needle as they have to knit and repeat the knitting through the back

loops of the two stitches on the right needle.* Repeat the work in the ** as long as all stitches are

BO.

This BO I also use for my Toe-up socks or children pullover cuff BO or shawls. Wherever I think a

stretchy BO I should use, I take this one.
