Time Law Related Education Francis Lubbock (1815-1405) Francis Richard Lubbock was born in Beaufort, South Carolina in 1815 and came to Texas in 1836. During the Texas Revolution, Sam Houston appointed him comptroller. In 1857 he was elected Lieutenant Governor of the State, and in 1861 he was elected Governor. An active supporter of the government of the Confederate States of America, he joined the Confederate forces after his term as governor ended. He was commissioned as a lieutenant colonel, and served as assistant adjutant general on the staff of Maj. Gen. John Bankhead Magruder. Lubbock also served as aid-de- camp for Jefferson Davis and was captured with him at the end of the war. He was imprisoned at Fort Delaware and kept in solitary confinement for eight months before being paroled. From 1878 to 1891 he was Treasurer of the state of Texas and then lived in Austin until his death. John BellHood(1831-1879)

John Bell Hood graduated from the U.S. Military Academyin 1853. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant andtransferred to the 2nd U.S. Calvary unit in Texas. Heresigned from the U.S. Army after Fort Sumter. He joinedthe Confederate army as a captain. In 1862 he waspromoted to Brigadier General and put in command of whatWas known as Hood's Texas Brigade. He served with Lee's

Army of Northern Virginia. His bravery was soon noted,and he was promoted to Major General. His division foughtat Second Manassas (Second Bull Run), Sharpsburg(Antietam), Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg. At Gettysburg,Hood was seriously wounded. He was relieved of commandat his own request on January 23, 1865. Hood surrenderedto federal authorities. He died in New Orleans from yellowfever on August 30, 1879. Hood county and Fort Hood areboth named in his honor.

Bom in Virginia, Magruder was appointed to the UnitedStates Military Academy and graduated fifteenth in hisclass. He resigned from the US Army to take a commissionas Lt. Colonel in the Confederate Army. Magruder's greatestfeat was the recapture of Galveston from Union forces.After the Civil War, he fled to Mexico where he served inthe Emperor Maximilian:s army. He later returned to Texasto make his home in Houston where he died in 1871.

Ulysses S.Grant(1822-1885)

Ulysses S. Grant was born in 1822. Grant was educated at

West Point Academy where he graduated in the middle ofhis class. He fought in the Mexican War where he served

under General Zachary Taylor. President Lincoln

appointed him General of the Union Army during the CivilWar, and he won the first major Union victories of the war.

On April 9, 1865, at Appomattox Court House, General

Robert E. Lee surrendered to Grant. Grant wrote out the

terms of surrender in such a way as to prevent treason

trials. He became the 18th President of the United States in

1868. As President, he presided over the government

similar to the way he ran the Army. He brought part of his

Army staff to the White House, and his presidency was

plagued by corruption.

John Reagan(1818-1905)

John Reagan was born in Tennessee in 1818 but moved to

Texas in 1839. He soon became a leader in the Texas

Democratic Party and served Texas in the United States

House of Representatives from 1857 to 1861 when he

resigned his seat in order to join the Confederate States of

America. At the end of the Civil War, Reagan was captured

with President Jefferson Davis. Reagan drafted a letter

urging Texans to renounce slavery and secession and

recognize the authority of the United States. As a result of

this letter, many Texans shunned him, and for a time, his

political career came to an end. However,, in 1875, he was

once more elected to represent Texas in the U. S. House of

Representatives where he remained until 1887. He died in1905 and became known as the "Old Roman" who had

sacrificed his political future for the good of his state.

Robert E. Lee(1807-1870)

Robert E. Lee was born in Virginia in 1807. He was aVirginia planter. He graduated from West Point Academywhere he ranked second in a class of forty-six, and wascommissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in the engineers. Herejected Abraham Lincoln's offer to command the UnionArmyat the start of the Civil War. He instead seceded withhis home state of Virginia and became the commander of theConfederate Army. His surrender to Ulysses S. Grant atAppomattox ended the Civil War. After the war, Lee returnedto Richmond. During the last five years of his life, he servedas President of Washington College in Lexington, Virginia.Lee was indicted for treason but was never brought to trial.Lee fell ill on September 28, 1870, in Lexington and died afew weeks later on October 12. Lee has been compared toGeneral George Washington in terms of the respect which heearned from his soldiers, his region, and the nation.

Henry Clay(1777-1852)

Henry Clay was born in Virginia in 1777. Known as a WarHawk, he was a U.S. Senator and U.S. Representative fromKentucky. He also served as Speaker of the U.S. House ofRepresentatives and Secretary of State under John QuincyAdams. Some historians believe he was involved in the"Corrupt Bargain" that allowed John Quincy Adams tobecome President. Clay advocated for the American System(a high protective tariff to fund internal improvements). Heis known as the "Great Compromiser." He was involved inthe passage of the Missouri Compromise of 1820 whichmaintained the balance between free and slave states in theUnion; and the Compromise of 1850 which allowedCalifornia to become a free state, restricted the slave trade inD.C. and created a stricter Fugitive Slave Clause. Clay ranfor the Presidency of the United States three times, but wasnever elected.

Jefferson Davis(18o8-1889)

Jefferson Davis was born on June 3, 1808 in Kentucky. He

was a West Point graduate, fought in the Mexican American

War, and was the U.S. Secretary of War under President

Franklin Pierce. Davis served as a Democratic U.S. Senator

from Mississippi. He had expected to be given a militarycommand when the Confederacy was formed in 1861, but

he was chosen President of the Confederacy instead, which

stunned and saddened him. In his inaugural address as

President of the Confederate States of America, he argued

that separation from the Union was a "necessity, not a

choice." After the Civil War, Jefferson Davis was

imprisoned for two years awaiting trial for treason, but he

was never tried. He was however stripped of his eligibility

to run for public office.

AbrahamLincoln

"(1809-186S)

Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809, on a

Kentucky farm. He married Mary Todd, and they had four

boys, with only one of them living to maturity. In 1858Lincoln ran against Stephen A. Douglas for U.S. Senator

from Illinois. He lost the election, but in debating Douglas,

gained a national reputation that won him the Republican

nomination for President in 1860. As President of the United

States during the Civil War, he issued the EmancipationProclamation that declared freedom for slaves within the

Confederacy. He also delivered the famous Gettysburg

Address dedicating the Soldier's National Cemetery inGettysburg, Pennsylvania. On April 14, 1865, Lincoln was

assassinated at Ford's Theater by an actor named John

• Wilkes Booth.

John C.Calhoun

(1782-18"50)

John C. Calhoun was born in South Carolina in 1782. Hewas a U.S. Representative and U.S. Senator from SouthCarolina. He was Secretary of War under President JamesMonroe, Secretary of State under John Tyler, and VicePresident of the United States under John Quincy Adamsand Andrew Jackson. After resigning the Vice Presidency,he continued to advocate states' rights and the doctrine ofnullification. Nullification was the practice of individualstates overriding federal legislation they deemedunconstitutional. He published his opinions against theTariff of Abominations in the South Carolina Exposition in1832. Calhoun died on March 31, 1850, convinced that hisbeloved South might have to one day withdraw from theUnion he had served so long.

Thomas"Stonewall"

Jackson(1824-1863)

Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson was one of the most thmousfigures in American Civil War history. He was a strong-willed, naturally gifted military leader. He graduated fromWest Point, served in the U.S. Army, and fought in theMexican War and the Civil War. Perhaps best known for hiscourageous ability to face an opposing army like a "stonewall" without backing down, Jackson was a veteran of manyCivil War battles and skirmishes. He was revered by theConfederate armies of the South, not only for his years ofdedicated military service but also for his repeated displaysof bravery and valor. Jackson died in May, 1863 as a resultof complications from wounds received at Chancellorsvilleand pneumonia. When Stonewall died, Robert E. Lee said, "I have lost my right arm." He was buried at Lexington,Virginia.
