Dear Mary Star of the Sea Parishioners: A Blessed and Holy New Year to you all. Happy Feast of the Baptism of Our Blessed Lord, which we celebrated this past week. I hope things are beginning to settle down after this Holy Season. Peace to all. Sincerely in Christ, Fr. Harrigan Pastor God the Father attests to the divinity of the Son at the moment of his baptism in the waters of the Jordan and, by this means, Jesus "manifested his glory, and his disciples believed in him." (Jn 2:11) Jesus is Messiah. His eternal messianic consecration was revealed during the time of his earthly life at the moment of his baptism by John, when "God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power," "that he might be revealed to Israel" (Acts 10:38; Jn 1:31) as its Messiah. His works and words will manifest him as "the Holy One of God." (Mk 1:24; Jn 6:69; Acts 3:14) (CCC 438)

When he attained to the perfect age, when the time came for him to teach, to work miracles and to draw men to himself, then it was fitting for his Godhead to be attested from on high by the Father's testimony, so that his teaching might be the more credible . 'The Father who sent me has himself borne witness to me' (Jn 5:37) (St. Thomas Aquinas, Summa theologiae, III, q. 39, a. 8 ad 3.) Our Lord's baptism, a sign only of his divinity, better enables us to understand our own reception of this great sacrament of initiation into Christian life and salvation. Baptism is a grace which we accept and in which we grow through a life of perseverance in prayer and worship in body, mind and spirit. ...after Baptism man needs to pray continually in order to enter heaven; for though sins are remitted through Baptism, there still remains the inclination to sin which assails us from within, and also the flesh and the devil which assail us from without. (St. Thomas Aquinas, Summa theologiae, III, q. 39, a. 5.) The Father has spoken forth the eternal Word in Christ the Lord, and breathed forth the word of truth at the baptism of the Lord; "Thou art my beloved Son; with thee I am well pleased." (Lk 3:22) In our daily lives we are to grow in prayer, sacrifice and consecration, all by means of the Word of truth, poured forth for us continually in the proclamation of the Gospel and the sacramental life. We encounter the Lord Jesus most perfectly and most fully each week in the Eucharistic Sacrifice, for He truly speaks to us when the Scriptures are proclaimed in the assembly and at the Communion of the Mass we truly receive Him Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity in the Most Blessed Sacrament. By this God-given means the grace of our baptism will grow ever stronger, becoming "a fountain within us, welling up to eternal life".

Did You Know?/¿Sabia Usted? Ask kids open-ended questions: Communication is key for making sure you are up to date with your kids’ lives, especially as they grow older and you can’t be with them every step of the way. One way to keep communication strong is to ask your kids open-ended questions. Kids may not spontaneously tell you things that would be important for you to know, so you have to consider how to phrase questions that draw them in and allow them to share their thoughts and experiences. When you do ask open-ended questions, make sure you are patient in waiting for the answers. FFFAITHAITHAITH FFFORMATIONORMATIONORMATION

The disciples who stayed with Jesus learned for themselves who Jesus was. They shared the Good News that they had found the Messiah and others came. Together they were the first community of Jesus' disciples.

This is one of the most important aspects of our faith. No one is a disciple of Jesus alone. To be a follower of Jesus is to be part of a community. We are never called for our own sake, but for the sake of others. To be called does not require perfection on our behalf, only fidelity and holy listening. The fishermen of Galilee and even the tax collectors that Jesus called were certainly not called because of their qualifications or achievements. We will never be the same because Jesus has called us, loved us, changed us and made us into his image. Because he has called us, we have no choice but to call others to follow him. Jesus awaits us in the ordinary events of our day.

Adult Confirmation: Classes for Adult Confirmation will begin on Tuesday, January 16, 2018. Now is the time to register.

Dear Parishioners,

Our students have been back to school for one week and are working to fulfill their new year’s goals. Social Studies Fair is just around the corner and all classes are preparing to expand on the State Standards for their grade level by “going deeper” and creating a written project, a display board and an oral presentation. Each year academics and faith are enriched by field trips outside of the school:

° 7th and 8th grade will visit the Museum of Tolerance to bring to life the literature they have read on the Holocaust.

° 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade took a bus to Santa Ana to visit the Discovery Museum. Students were given the opportunity to learn by touching and exploring.

° All students in grades Kindergarten to 8th grade will walk to the Warner Grand Theater to see Seussical the Musical.

° 4th grade is planning to visit the San Gabriel Mission in March to expand on their study of California history.

DON’T MISS OUT

Vegas Night 2018: Saturday January 27th Anchors Away and Ships Ahoy….

° Call the office and reserve your seat. (310)831-0875

° Dinner tickets and Raffle Tickets will be available on the patio Sunday January 21st after all the morning Masses. (or every day at the school office)
