Smooth criminal

This is not your usual glam-ourized, expensive, 1930s-peri-od mafia dramas, quite the op-posite. Interestingly, the film al-most entirely features men,

which is not to say womendont hold a place in the crimi-nal underworld.

News clips and radio broad-casts of the financial collapse inWall Street set this film in 2008

just before Obama was elected

president. In the low-incomesuburbs of Louisiana, a small-time crime boss hires two low-life crooks to raid a gamblingden run by a mafia hustler (RayLiotta) with the intent of mak-ing look like the inside job ofthe hustler. The plan backfiresdays after, and so the biggerbosses hire Jackie Cogan (BradPitt) to set things straight andreestablish criminal order.

Veteran actor Richard Jenk-ins is the Driver who relays themessage from above, while TheSopranos star James Gandolfiniplays the hitman Mickey. Mick-ey is supposedly the muscle inJackies operation, but the old-timer just drowns himself inself-pity, booze and prostitutes.

Remember The Assassination

of Jesse James by the CowardRobert Ford? Same director.Killing Them Softlyis equallystylish but in reversecool,subdued, at times gritty withthe bloody action but mostlydarkly humorous.

Photographed and editedlike a 70s French thriller, this isa very talky film that has mo-ments of great banter betweenJenkins and Pitt. But of course,after Aaron Sorkins The Social

Network, were well aware thattalk can also be thrilling. Aslong as its written well. With afew suspenseful action mo-ments.

The point is not a shallowstory about a cool, suave mafiaenforcer cleaning up the bun-gled job of two stupid criminals.That part of the plot makes

Killing Them S oftlya short, easynarrative. Setting that small sto-

ry against an America threat-ened by a very real economiccollapse and suddenly, even afew pennies matter whether thecriminals are big or small. Thepolitics of the financial crisisdont make a strong punchthroughout the film, until Pittslast line, which is the best partof the film.

Trabaho lang. Its the econo-my, stupid.
