GIVEN Gilas Pilip-inass unexpectedfine, though still
losing performance, inthe FIBA World in Spain,the general feeling wasthat the team would justbreeze through its assign-ments in the IncheonAsian Games on its wayto preparing for the next
FIBA Asia Olympic quali-fiers next year.But before our team left for
Spain and upon their return,three questions had been beg-ging for answers:
1. Is this essentially the sameteam that we will send to In-cheon?
2. Is it the right team for thejob in Incheon?
3. How ready are we for the
opposition in AsianGames caging?
SBP head hon-cho and Gilasmain patron Man-ny V. Pangilinan pro-
vided the answer tothe first by saying yes,its practically the sameteam that we would besent to Incheon.
But the answers to the othertwo questions were left hangingand later became lost amidstthe euphoria that attended Gi-
las Pilipinass heady stint inSpain.
Gilas Pilipinas showed heart,puso, lots of it in all its gamesin the FIBA World that prompt-ed observers here and abroad todeclare that the country is backto top level international bas-ketball.
But there seems to be a lackof brainwork needed to ensurethat it will be that same team
fied an urgent sense of missionto the team as a whole.
Secondly, thereseems to be a lackof scouting on the
opposition, particu-larly teams from Iran,
South Korea, Qatar,Japan and Kazakhstan.Most likely, Gilas could
have scouted on the Iraniansand the Sokors in Spain butIran and the host tinkered withtheir teams for Incheon.
As a result, Gilas was hardly
prepared for TJ Moon, the Ko-rean-American who burned usfor 38 points who was with theSokor team in 2011 but was notin the same team in FIBA Spaindue to his playing stint in Eu-rope.
Gilas was prepared for 7-3Iranian ace slotman Heddadi butnot his equally tall but youngerback-up who took over 7-0 Kar-doshs role as relief center.
