My Shelter Founda-tion is the brainchild of Illac Diaz, a social en-trepreneur who made
waves in the world of sustainable develop-ment with the Liter of Light project, or in Fil-ipino, “Isang LitrongLiwanag.” His new na-tionwide campaign,
dubbed Green Revolu-tion, not only high-lights the innovativeprojects of the founda-tion, it also aims to ral-ly Filipinos to do theirpart in addressing thepressing issues of envi-
ronmental destruction, using resources in asustainable manner, and rethinking the way
we look at waste ma-terials.
“We are excited toopen the very first So-lar Pavilion in thePhilippines. This yearmarks the 150th birth
anniversary of AndresBonifacio who begana revolution for free-dom. The Solar Pavil-ion celebrates Bonifa-cio and symbolizes thebirth of a new kind of revolution,” Diaz said.
The Liter of Lightproject began in 2010and has lighted up28,000 homes in thePhilippines. The ideahas since been sharedto other nations suchas India, Indonesia,Peru, Colombo, andSwitzerland. Seeing
the impact it had onthe lives of many peo-ple, Diaz decided toexpand the scope of his foundation’s advo-cacy and take on a
bigger challenge.“Creating sustain-
able solutions to helpourselves and othersaround the world isnot out of our reach.Filipinos can do it. Wecan begin this revolu-tion,” added Diaz.
The Solar Pavilion was built with recy-cled plastic bottlesplaced inside plastic
crates which werethen supported by plastic ties and scaf-foldings. The interiorof the pavilion boastsa hydroponics designthat allows plants tobe grown without theuse of soil and usingonly mineral nutrientsolutions in water.
The Solar Pavilion will be open for publicuse, especially to stu-
dents, and will offerscheduled workshopson sustainability andgreen technologiesuntil June 12.
