MONDAY, MARCH 16, 2009 11SHOWBUZZArnel Pineda shinesin Journey concert

Two cuts from Revelationseemed to have a special mean-ing for most of Journey’s mem-bers. In a sense, the ballad Afterall these Years and the fast-paced Change for the Bettercould describe the trials andtribulations the band had gonethrough – including a 10-yearhiatus and losing StevePerry as lead singer in1997, which prompted afrustrating search for a re-placement, until Schonfound Pineda on YouTubein 2007.

High notesWhile comparisons with

Perry’s clean, high tenorwas inevitable, Pineda’s in-spired performance at MoArevealed his own distinctvocal quality, which is a lit-tle rough but neverthelessawesome in its ability toreach the high notes.

When Cain and Schonplayed an introspective, bluesy intro to Journey’smost famous power ballad,Open Arms, Pineda sangwith an emotion so effu-

sive, it sent a powerful vibe oflove and under-standing thatseemed to em-brace the crowd.

By the timeSeparate Ways,Faithfully, Don’tStop Believingand Any Way YouWant It – all bighits during Jour-ney’s peak yearsin the ‘80s –came on, thecrowd was inworship mode. Ifthe band wasnot exactly a fa-

vorite of critics because itssongs tended to hew close tothe pop-hook formula, the audi-ence at MoA, which cut acrossvarying age levels and socialclasses, couldn’t care less. Theywanted to have a good timeand did.

Beyond his wildestdreams

If there was a song that Pine-da could best identify with, itwas Wildest Dream. At onepoint during the gig, he re-ferred to his new-found fame as“the most precious moment ofmy life,” and later thanked theband “for trusting me with theirsongs.”

And if he gets to keep his jobas Journey’s front man and tryhis hand writing songs in thenext few years, that would sur-pass even his wildest dreams.

Standing onstage, his headbowed and eyes closed, Pinedaembodied all the hopes and as-pirations of his countrymen. Ashis voice filled the concertvenue with another soulfulmelody, the audience’s faces litup with pride.

By Pocholo Concepcion

A RNEL Pineda does not have the smolderingsexuality of a Jim Morrison, nor the wild an-tics of a Mick Jagger onstage. But on Saturday

night, Pineda wore leather pants and pranced like atrue rock star as he led Journey in a rousing perfor-mance before an appreciative audience of 25,000 atthe SM Mall of Asia (MoA) open-air grounds in PasayCity.

The 41-year-old native ofSampaloc, Manila, who begansinging professionally at 15 andworked as an OFW (overseasFilipino worker) musician inHong Kong for many years, wasa dynamic presence onstage. Hedanced, twisted his body, sprint-ed and even leapt in mid-air —in between singing — withoutskipping a beat.

Drummer Deen Castronovo, who provided excellent rhythmalong with bassist Ross Valory, sang lead vocals in several num-bers. Jonathan Cain multi-tasked – playing guitar, then theblues harp and later the pianowith enviable ease.

Old and newThe MoA concert was a mix-

ture of classic and new Journeymaterial. It opened with NeverWalk Away, an upbeat track offthe group’s latest release, thedouble album Revelation, whichdebuted at No. 5 on the Bill-board charts in June last yearand sold its millionth copy sixmonths later.

This was followed by Only theYoung from 1983’s Frontiers al-bum, prompting baby boomersin the audience to sing along tothe lyrics. A middle-aged Filip-ina was spotted mouthing everyline of most of the ‘80s songs,wh i l e c oup l e s a r ound he rhugged and swayed to the mu-sic. Later on, another tune,Lights, released only as a singlein 1978, delighted the crowd.
