WORK RULES

60-SECOND BOOK BRIEFS

BY LASZLO BOCK

Laszlo Bock is the head of people at Google, and he’s

helped create one of the world’s most dynamic

and effective corporate cultures. He wrote the

book Work Rules to help you do the same.

Here are his 10 steps he suggests you take to transform your team or workplace.

1.Give your work meaning. You’ll get the most out of your people if you tie their work to a higher purpose.

????????? ??

2.Trust your people. Give the power to your front-line employees.

3.Hire only people who are better than you.

4.Don’t confuse development with managing performance.

5.Focus on the two tails. Your best and your worst employees are where you should focus your energy.

6.Be frugal and generous. Frugal with the things that don’t matter, and generous with the things that do.

7.Pay unfairly. Your top performers should be paid more - even for the same role.

8.Nudge. Small gestures make a big difference.

“Good job Bob. Dinner is on me tonight.”

9.Manage the rising expectations. You won’t get it right all the time.

10.Enjoy! Then go back to No. 1 and start all over again.
