Did you ever feel like some people were just waiting for you to

mess up? Most people have been in that situation at one time or

another. In today’s first reading, this was a reality for the prophet

Jeremiah. He was sent by God to warn his enemies about the path

they were on. He often got depressed and wanted to give up be-

cause it was a lousy job and he didn’t seem to be having any suc-

cess at it. The people he was trying to help were plotting against

him, and eventually did kill him. It remains true today that when

people speak out for what is right—or more specifically speak

out against what is wrong—they are often demonized, discredited

and attacked. All of the Prophets in the Scriptures dealt with two

major infractions against God: false worship, social injustice

against the poor and marginalized. Those who have been address-

ing the very real social injustice of institutionalized racism in our

country are having their message drowned out by and are being

lumped in with people who are causing violence and destruction.

Some are being physically attacked and even killed for trying to

be a voice for those whose plight has been ignored or down-

played by the plague of implicit bias.

Paul reminds us that our sinfulness—our inability to treat one

another as beloved children of God; made in God’s image and

likeness and the brothers and sisters of Jesus—pales in compari-

son with the love that God continues to offer us.

Jesus speaks to his apostles about what it means to live our faith

authentically—to know that no matter how strong evil appears to

be; no matter how big the challenge we are facing is—living an

authentic faith means not living in fear. God sees everything,

knows everything, and works for the good through us. If we em-

brace his mission to be witnesses to the truth, we might, like Jere-

miah and most of the Apostles, experience persecution, danger,

discredit or death. But, we’ll be right with God. We need to make

sure we’re standing on the correct side of any issue—the side that

builds up, listens, uplifts the dignity of the other, and loves radi-

cally.

How do I respond to the prophetic voices that speak for the vul-

nerable and undervalued? Am I a voice for the dignity of all hu-man beings? Am I a Jeremiah, or one who would rather have God’s corrective message silenced? Why do you think the people

of Jeremiah’s time wanted him dead? Why do you think the peo-ple of the Apostle’s time wanted them dead? Do I trust that when

I speak out in truth and for human dignity God will have my back?

TODAY’S GOSPEL

Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time

June 21, 2020

Jesus said to the Twelve:

"Fear no one.

Nothing is concealed that will not be revealed,

nor secret that will not be known.

What I say to you in the darkness, speak in the light;

what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops.

And do not be afraid of those who kill the body

but cannot kill the soul;

rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy

both soul and body in Gehenna.

further notice.

Father’s Day Blessing

God Our Father ,

In your wisdom and love you have created us

and called us your own.

Bless our fathers,

that they may be strengthened as Christian fathers.

Let the example of their faith and love shine forth.

In moments of joy, rejoice with them.

In times of struggle,

give them your courage and perseverance.

Grant that we, their sons and daughters,

may honor and appreciate them always

with a spirit of profound respect.

May the example and prayer of St. Joseph

inspire them to live their vocation with courage.

Grant this through Christ our Lord.

Amen

Happy Father’s Day

Procedures for returning to Mass

WORSHIP

Good morning. We have a few instructions/reminders for the celebration of Mass

today, remembering that the pandemic continues and that we are required to fol-

low specific procedures for the health and safety of all present, and the wider

community.

Please make sure that you are socially distancing and wearing your mask the en-

tire time you are in the Church.

The clergy will not process or recess, and will not be available to visit after Mass.

Please do not seek us out.

While music will be provided by Bob and Renee today, we ask that the faithful in Church refrain

from singing along.

Spoken responses are welcome.

There will be no collection at the offertory time. Please place donations to the Church in the baskets

by the gathering area door.

At the time of Communion, all of the faithful are to remain in your pews. If you intend to receive the

Eucharist, please stand when you are instructed, and a Eucharistic Minister will come to you to dis-

tribute Communion. If you are not receiving, please remain seated.

When Communion is presented to you, say “Amen” with your mask on, receive the host in your

hand, and then pull your mask down to place the Eucharist in your mouth. Cover your face back up,

sit or kneel, and spend your time with our Lord.

Four teams of Eucharistic Ministers and Ushers will be deployed to the parking lot at the time of

Communion to distribute to the faithful in their cars. If you intend to receive in your car, please put

your hand out the window when the Eucharistic Ministers begin to head toward your section. Do not

get out of your car. The Eucharistic Minister will hand you Communion through your window. If

you have a donation to make, you may place it in the basket that the usher has at that time. Please

wait until the final blessing to leave the parking lot to fulfill your attendance at Mass, and for the

safety of the liturgical ministers.

When Mass is over, those in cars may leave. Those in the pews should wait to be dismissed by the

ushers, and exit through the door to which you are directed.

Please do not congregate outside, but get directly into your cars.

We are glad that you have been able to join us today, and look forward to the time when our com-

munity may gather unrestricted in safety.
