Covid-19 on World Water Day

Washing hands is one of the best ways to protect yourself against Covid-19. But many communities around the world do not have safe water. We remain committed to managing water responsibly, so that there is more to go around, and helping our communities gain access to potable water.

As individuals, the most important thing we can do is to understand that water is a finite source. We need to really consider our water use and how each us

can use it more sparingly.” Nosimo Macatsha, Group Head of Water Management

Examples of how we’re adapting to changing climate conditions that can affect our operations

Floods Low rainfall Flooding or droughts affecting security of supply

Heavy rainfall creates breeding ground for

mosquitoes

We have solid protocols to manage floods and keep

our people safe, as well as structures to contain floods. Tailing storage facilities are designed to remain stable in

severe weather.

Water is treated to repel mosquitoes at Tarkwa

and Damang. We also run employee and community

malaria awareness programmes like those on

World Malaria Day.

We applied to withdraw water from the Tingo river

during the dry season in an Environmental

Impact Assessment (EIA). Authorities, community

representatives and other stakeholders were consulted

for approval.

We applied for a water license to increase water

storage on site. Part of this is lining the old Return Water

Dam to prevent seepage. New drainage and culverts help to prevent flooding.

From droughts to flash floods, our regions are already experiencing the effects of climate change. In addition to targets for recycling and reusing water, every region has a dedicated adaptation strategy to:• Ensure a consistent, reliable water supply for our mines without compromising the volume and quality of water supplied to our communities• Prevent production disruptions caused by flooding or lack of water
