BLENDING TECHNOLOGY AND REAL WORLD LEARNING AT MSE!

At Morris Schott Elementary, the #schoolofheroes, students and teachers are learning how to use modern technology to prepare for college and careers in the future! The MSE mission is to create a community of HEROES - which means well rounded students who are Healthy, Educated, Respectful, and Goal Oriented. For students to be well rounded in their lives, they need more than just traditional education models. They need to explore, experience, and combine all ways to solve problems.

In our mission and vision to be well rounded citizens of our commu-nity, we need to make sure it is not just technology we use to learn and be ready for the future. We must also combine that with hands on, real life experiences.

For example, students take real world math problems, and students present their solutions to the class using iPad presentation software. In another class, they might document a real-life, plant growing sci-ence experiment by taking pictures and describing the plant growth process in an online portfolio.

We, at MSE, are blazing a trail in the 21st century, continuing to grow and improve - with and without technology. Some students have been learning their correct sound combinations as “phonics police” who find words that are incorrect and “arresting” them - no iPad needed. Students are becoming citizens of our community, and learning team-work within their chosen “houses” (University of Washington Huskies are up in points right now!). Other students are learning respect and professionalism with our gentlemen's Dress For Success Club - without iPads at all. When we do use technology, we can find solutions with it to help our world, like the Lego Robotics club and their farmers and wolves preservation project.

Mezclando Tecnologia y un mundo real de aprendizaje en la primaria MSE

En la Escuela Primaria Morris Schott, la #escueladehéroes, estudi-antes y maestros están aprendiendo cómo usar la tecnología moderna para prepararse para la universidad y carreras en el futuro! La misión de MSE es crear una comunidad de HEROES - lo que significa es-tudiantes bien orientados que son saludables, educados, respetuosos y con metas. Para que los estudiantes estén bien orientados en sus vidas, necesitan algo más que modelos tradicionales de educación. Ellos necesitan explorar, experimentar y combinar todas las formas de resolver problemas.

En nuestra misión y visión de ser ciudadanos bien orientados de nuestra comunidad, debemos asegurarnos de que no solamente sea la tecnología que usemos para aprender y estar preparados para el futuro. También debemos combinar eso con la práctica y las experi-encias de la vida real.

MATTAWA ELEMENTARY STUDENTS PUT OTHERS ABOVE THEMSELVES

Mattawa Elementary is having a fantastic year. Our students have been having lots of great experiences that will enrich their lives and prepare them to become future leaders. One of the great resources that we have available to our students this year is iPads for every student. Students have been using their iPads to access excellent resources that may not have been available to them previously. This wonderful resource will continue to enhance the learning in math, reading, science and every other content area.

During the month of November our students were able to participate in a coin drive to help provide a Thanksgiving dinner to local families. Students collected different coins on different days for a week and earned over $450 to buy food for those in need. This food was deliv-ered by our counselor, Mrs. Mendoza, and a number of our amazing leadership students. It was a powerful experience for our students to put those in need above themselves. Thank you to Mrs. Mendoza for all her help organizing this great experience.

Students are working hard to improve their reading and math skills at Mattawa Elementary. Programs such as Reading Plus and Think Through Math have been a big help and have made the students ex-cited to learn reading and math skills. We are looking forward to seeing the fantastic results from all of the students and teachers hard work.

SADDLE MT. HIGHLIGHTSTHANK YOU Saddle Mt. Elementary parents for an outstanding start

to the 2016-17 school year. I am very pleased with the progress of our students this year, and we are well on our way to having another great year at SME. Encourage your child to do their very best at school every day, and to take advantage of all of the fun learning opportu-nities that come their way. Thank you for your continued support in your child’s education.

SME PTO -We have an official Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) at SME. The PTO is made up of parents that want to make a positive impact on students and support education for our youngsters. The PTO has been very involved in raising money for school programs, and related activities. The PTO meets once every two weeks, starting on the 2nd Tuesday of the month in the SME library. Contact the SME office if you are interested in attending and/or joining.

READING CHALLENGE - It’s that time of year everybody! When the weather gets cold, there is nothing better than snuggling up to a great book. For the next 3 weeks, SME has been challenged to read 3500 books- the catch is those books have to be read outside of school. When your child has finished a short book, they will need to complete a summary page, and turn it into their teacher. At the end of the challenge six lucky winners will be selected for special prizes.

PARENTS, if you would like to become involved, you are invited to join us in the library to read with students. Contact Ms. Sanchez in the office at (509) 932-5693, or any PTO members.

SME ROBOTICS - The first ever VEX IQ Robotics Club at SME consists of 18 students in grades 3 through 5. Under the direction of Cesar Ortiz and Katie Ruiz, the Robotics club meets after school and supports the S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) initiative as well as Math and Science in the classroom. These students competed against many other school clubs on Dec 10th at Central Washington University. The competitions involve three different challenges that require the students to control their Robot individually, and as part of a team.

WAHLUKE HALL OF FAMEDo you know a former Wahluke student who has done amazing

work after attending our schools? If you know someone who meets the following criteria listed below please nominate them by visiting our Hall of FAME page on our high school webpage.

General criteria for nominees: ➢ Must have attended Wahluke Schools at least 10 years prior to

the time of nomination and➢ Made meritorious contributions to society in general or to a specific

segment of society, or➢ Has demonstrated a high level of achievement in his/her vocation

and made significant contributions to that field, or➢ Has served our community or country in a significant way

After School Intramurals

The second session of Intramurals start on Jan. 17th and runs through March 9th. Registration forms will go out after Winter Break. We have added activities buses on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thurs-day so that all kids participating in after school intramurals, interven-tions, or other activities will be provided transportation home. The buses leave at 4:30. This is a great opportunity for our students to have a ride home and still be able to participate in our after school programs.

Wahluke Athletics Underway

Wahluke Athletics have had a great year so far. High School winter sports are off and running. Be sure to take in as many games as possible, we want a great atmosphere for our student-athletes who are competing. If you can’t attend our home games you can catch the varsity basketball games and wrestling matches being broadcast-ed over Wahluke High School’s Facebook Page via Facebook Live. Junior High Girls Basketball and Wrestling start up right after Winter Break. We look forward to a great season for all of our JH student athletes.

The High School is hosting two large wrestling events; Saturday, February, 4th we are hosting the Boys District Tournament starting at 10:00am, and Saturday, February, 11th, we are hosting the Girls Regional Tournament. Mark your calendars to come and watch, and if you would like to volunteer for either, or both, of these events please contact Cody Marlow, Wahluke Athletic Director, at 509-831-9379.

Community Fitness Center This is a busy time of year for the Fitness Center. Be sure to stop

by the Administration building to renew/purchase your membership card. Fitness Center hours of operation are: 5:00am - 7:00am and 6:00pm - 8:00pm Monday through Friday, except holidays or during home high school events. We are also in the process of creating membership cards with picture identification. We hope to have this option available in time for the new year.

ESTUDIANTES DE PRIMARIA MATTAWA PONEN A OTROS POR ENCIMA

DE ELLOS MISMOS

Primaria Mattawa Elementary está teniendo un año fantástico. Nuestros estudiantes han estado teniendo muchas experiencias fantásticas que enriquecerán sus vidas y los prepararán para conver-tirse en futuros líderes. Uno de los grandes recursos que tenemos a disposición de nuestros estudiantes este año es iPads para cada es-tudiante. Los estudiantes han estado usando sus iPads para acceder a recursos excelentes que no pudieron haber estado disponibles para ellos previamente. Este maravilloso recurso continuará mejorando el aprendizaje en matemáticas, lectura, ciencias y cualquier otra área de contenido.

Durante el mes de noviembre, nuestros estudiantes pudieron par-ticipar en una unidad de monedas para ayudar a ofrecer una cena de Acción de Gracias a las familias locales. Los estudiantes recolec-taron diferentes monedas en diferentes días durante una semana y obtuvieron más de $450 para comprar comida para los necesitados. Esta comida fue entregada por nuestra consejera, la Sra. Mendoza, y una serie de nuestros asombrosos estudiantes de liderazgo. Fue una experiencia poderosa para nuestros estudiantes poner a los necesitados por encima de ellos mismos. Gracias a la Sra. Mendoza por toda su ayuda organizando esta gran experiencia.

Los estudiantes están trabajando duro para mejorar sus habili-dades de lectura y matemáticas en Mattawa Elementary. Programas como Reading Plus y Think Through Math han sido una gran ayuda y han hecho que los estudiantes estén entusiasmados por aprender habilidades de lectura y matemáticas. por un excelente comienzo del año escolar 2016-17. Estoy muy con-tento con el progreso de nuestros estudiantes este año, y estamos bien en nuestro camino para tener otro gran año en SME. Anime a su hijo a hacer todo lo posible en la escuela todos los días, y aprovechar todas las divertidas oportunidades de aprendizaje que vienen a su camino. SME PTO - Tenemos una Organización de Padres y Maestros (PTO) en SME. El PTO está formado por padres que quieren tener un im-pacto positivo en los estudiantes y apoyar la educación de nuestros jóvenes. El PTO ha estado muy involucrado en recaudar fondos para programas escolares y actividades relacionadas. La PTO se reúne una vez cada dos semanas, comenzando el segundo martes del mes en la biblioteca de SME. Póngase en contacto con la oficina de SME si está interesado en asistir y/o unirse.

DESAFÍO DE LA LECTURA - Es esa época del año todos! Cuando el clima se enfría, no hay nada mejor que acurrucarse con un gran libro. Durante las próximas 3 semanas, SME fue retada a leer 3500 libros – el requisito es que esos libros tienen que leerse fuera de la escuela. Cuando su hijo haya terminado un breve libro, necesitarán completar la página de resumen y entregarla en su maestro. Al final del desafío se seleccionarán seis ganadores afortunados para pre-mios especiales.

IntramurosLa segunda sesión de Intramuros comienza el 17 de enero y se extiende

hasta el 9 de marzo. Los formularios de inscripción saldrán después de las vacaciones de invierno. Hemos agregado autobuses para las actividades el martes, miércoles y jueves para que todos los niños que participan en actividades, intramuros, intervenciones u otras actividades después de la escuela tengan transporte a casa. Los autobuses salen a las 4:30. Esta es una gran oportunidad para nuestros estudiantes de tener un viaje a casa y ser capaces de participar en nuestros programas después de la escuela.

Wahluke Athletics Wahluke Athletics ha tenido un gran año hasta ahora. Los deportes

de invierno de la preparatoria ya están funcionando. Asegúrese de participar en tantos juegos como sea posible, queremos un gran am-biente para nuestros estudiantes-atletas que están compitiendo. Six VEX Robotics teams from WSD competed at the Central Washington Uni-versity tournament on Dec. 3rd. Out of the two High School teams and four Jr High teams, three entered the elimination rounds. In the finals, one of our High School teams partnered with the tournaments two top seated teams and took home one of three CWU VEX Robotics Tournament Champion Awards. Way to go High School and coach, Mr. Wilson! Wahluke also sent three elementary Robotics teams to a tournament in Spokane on Dec 11th. (Results not available prior to publication.)

Seis equipos de VEX Robotics del Distrito Escolar de Wahluke compitieron en el torneo de la Universidad Central de Washington el 3 de diciembre.
