Peer influence: This is the most common reason that kids and teens, especially girls, start to smoke. Kids whose friends smoke are more likely to start smoking, as it gives them a sense of belonging.

Morrow and ShultzInitiatives: Sub committees have been formed to plan activities to support the Safe and Healthy Neighborhood goals ‐to enforce the City of Syracuse Business Certificate of Use Ordinance and to advocate for health in all policies. Enforcement of such policies will increase healthy and safe resources and reduce unhealthy and unsafe resources with special focus on young adults, youth, and children. Specific areas of interest are to: Reduce access and availability of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.

Wang et al. Approximately 434,000 Americans die each year as a result of smoking; these deaths have been associated with more than 5 million years of potential life lost. Because most daily smokers (82%) begin smoking before age 18 years and more than 3,000 young people become regular smokers each day, school programs designed to prevent tobacco use have been identified as one of the most effective strategies available to reduce tobacco use in the United States.
